  1. The SOL if the tax payers owe money is (7) years and (3) years to collect a refund and I do beleive that Catherine is correct the SOL clock begins when the returns are filed. Good luck with this mess and charge accordingly with a little extra aggrevation fee.
  2. No, I think you are referring to points paid that are rolled into the loan.
  3. The only thing I can add is if there is a refund due the deceased, be sure to fill out form 1310 to claim the refund.
  4. I am renewing as I write this reply. The software is by red gear or Tax Works. Other CPA's in my area are using it as well. This is an unbelieveable deal. It really doesn't take that much to get use to using imputs instead of working directly on the forms. I had the same concerns as others when it came to switching but I took the plunge and am glad I did.
  5. WOW! that is ugly. I am glad NC is still in the dark ages.
  6. Why not compare the three you have left, Tuition and Fees, Life Time Learning and the AOC and see which one returns the best result. Just a thought
  7. In TRX, there is a bank account verification form which can be used for the same thing. Didn't think about having them sign or initial anything but that is an exceptional idea. Thanks
  8. This is good to know information and I am going to save the post. Thanks KC
  9. This is why I gave up on e-filing anything business related. The only thing I have had any luck with was the filing of 1099's and W-2s everything else never seemed to go right. So, snail mail it is for the returns and any extensions.
  10. You have one other option and this is the possiblity of the return being rejected. If it is, then you are home free. If it isn't then the other options are all you have. I make it a practice to have the client verify the bank account entries. Doing this gives the client some time to think while they review the information. I mean I have them read the information from their check or information card after I enter it. This mistake is not your fault so I wouldn't spend alot of time trying to correct it. Do what you can and then Oops maybe your client will be more careful the next time
  11. As mentioned earlier, Pub 915 page 15 shows the amount to be entered on line 23 which is subject to the 2% floor.
  12. Donna, I am not using ATX this year. I would ask support why the form doesn't show as e-filed and if it actually gets e-filed. I certainly thought it did as I would question how the DOR reviews the credits when the form isn't there. The information transfers to page two of the NC D400 so I am sure they,(DOR), want to know what makes up the figure. One safe entry for the country would be Europe, unless of course, the foreign country is Canada. Will ATX let you enter VARIOUS as one of the options? If so, then that would be the entry.
  13. Well I just have to say, that I switch to TRX this year. I have to admit that in the beginning I wished I hadn't but now that I have used their program I must say it is a good program. It might not be Drake but the cost is attractive. The only quirks is me getting used to inputs and making sure I know where they are and where the information is coming from. I have had a good enough year with them that I plan on renewing and taking advantage of the renewal offer for 299. This includes the business module without business e-filing which suits me just fine as I don't e-file any corp S-Corp, or Partnership returns.
  14. The NC D 400TC does get e-filed. I have efiled them for years. Be sure to put the information about the other country and required amounts on the worksheet to claim the credit. In your case, an attachement should not be required and NC doesn't require any signature forms nor an 8453 so if you electronically file the return, you can't send an attachment.
  15. Deb, Don't get the mower in my post below. That one gives a whole new meaning to self-propelled. :)
  16. I guess you the only thing you can do is verify the entries. Sorry, but I don't have an answer for you. Let us know what the final analysis is as it will be interesting to know.
  17. Eli, I know that wasn't what you posted. My reply was to Catherine who posted the MyLink. You are welcome with the help on the NOL. All I know the fact that the form is not available must be an ATX thing because it is available in TRX. FYI - I had to call ATX support this afternoon for a problem in a 08 tax return. They were not at all helpful and there wasn't a prompt (after listenening to abouit 15)that addressed my problem. Twice I have had returns the IRS claims information was not entered on the client's return when it was. Twice they (Support)told me they could not look up any information regarding line by line transmissions. And, by the way, they will not review anything from 2008 until after April 15th. Huh???? I asked for an upper level tech or manager and all I got was put on hold. In their defense, they did verify the return was transmitted and accepted which I already knew that becasue it is only a year after the return was originally filed. Question - How does one prove what was transmitted? Both times the amounts have shown on the return. My only resolution is to not agree with the proposals and submit a hard copy of the returns as evidence of what was entered. It worked the last time so hopefully it will work now. I am not sorry that after 12 years I left ATX. There is no perfect software out there and anyone can make an error. Since the CCH take over, the support and their cooperation to help solve any after the fact problems, is nothing less than horrible. Thanks for letting me vent. Gotta run, my oldest is moving to NJ to get married and my help is needed.
  18. I am a QuickBooks Pro Advisor and I can't say that I like the previous suggestion on classes either. The ideal situation is two separate entities and two separate set of books which I can tell you are well aware of. Maybe I am missing something here but how is class tracking going to generate separate income statements and balance sheets? This is a mess indeed and I hope it brings you big bucks and maybe if you charge enough, they will finally listen to you.
  19. Try not to laugh too hard. I hope this works
  20. This could have been a program car, a salesman's demo...If it had never been titled before, then it would be considered new. it might be worth it to run a Carfax report on it. That will tell you where it came from and any previous owners.
  21. Let me add my 2 cents worth here. All of the suggestions are good but any trust return is nothing less than complex and you should not proceed until you have the trust instrument. One suggestion was a trust return (1041) should be filed anyway. What if this were a CRUT where the trust return is to be completed using form 1041A that carriers a 5k penalty for filing on the wrong form. Again, I apologize if you think I am yelling but GET THE TRUST DOCUMENTS.
  22. hey KC I was just going to post this but you beat me to the punch. The bottom of the notice said a web lookup service would be available by the end of March. I guess they didn't think we needed it any earlier than the end.
  23. You are welcome! I'm glad it worked for you
