My vote is supplies. I can't imagine that this client also depreciates these items or adds them to the basis. And aren't repairs and maintenance expensed unless significantly extending the life of the asset anyway? I don't do trucks, though, so it will be interesting to read the responses!

Now THAT's a slow week! Thanks, Taxbilly, for letting us know, otherwise we might think you, too, were on vacation and not reporting the really important stuff to us. And I agree: I'm actually weary of the this trickle stuff. It isn't so much the extended returns, although that's like pulling hen's teeth this year, it's the other things that Marilyn has mentioned. Grrr...At least I've let go 2 corporate clients in order to begin winding down the year-round stuff but things still keep popping up. Like this client couple in Switzerland - I hope to get this done soon! -

Ahh, at least someone is out there! And Lion, I expect you will be increasingly sparse in your comments as the BIG DAY approaches. That's only 6 weeks away. We do expect a full report upon recovery, though! PapaJoe, let me know if you know anything about foreign taxes and Form 2555! -
I am just checking to see if this site still works as there has been nothing posted that I can tell all day! I hope you all are well and doing something fun, if not productive, but I miss my water cooler chat!

Form 2555 misbehaving in MAX? and Foreign Tax Credit

Yes, yes, and yes. It's a puzzlement. I will recheck everything later this week with a fresh brain but now am baffled. Sigh... Thanks for taking a look! -

I have clients that moved to Switzerland early 2009. They both qualify for the physical presence test but I am baffled by the disparity between the dates I input and what comes up on the form. In input arrival in Switzerland Feb. 1, 2009 and left US Jan. 31, 2009. I had to input made up dates for arrival into US (2005) and departure from Switzerland (Feb. 1, 2010) to get anything to show up on the form at all. But the form shows the test is based on the 12 month period 12.29.08-12.28.09. HUH? Also, clients did not have Swiss tax withheld from pay but paid hefty amounts this year when return prepared. Since they are cash basis, do they get proportionate credit for that tax paid this year for 2009 income? If not, the US calculated tax is horrific even after the income exclusion. And if they get credit, how is that input? I've been trying to work with 1116, but the input is really a challenge! And I'm not even certain that's the place to put it. Thanks for any guidance.

Would like info on receiving faxes on the Internet/email
Margaret CPA in OH replied to Denne's topic in General Chat
Okay, so I have just spent a couple of hours and $100+ for a computer to be set up just as you described. All works pretty well except for one major issue. The principal reason I wanted this was to save the faxed documents to the respective client files as pdf's like all documents. So I can print to a regular printer or save as a tiff. I tried to add Adobe Pro as a printer and it goes through all the motions asking me where to save the file, says it's printing, etc. but nothing shows up as saved. Ideas? It seems silly to have this capability only to have to print everything, scan and save when all I wanted to do was save the electronic document in the first place. Should I just go back to my regular fax machine after all? Thanks! -

Hello online 'friends' Good to see you in touch again! I began the path to paperless, not quite paperfree but closer, a couple of years ago. I emptied about 12 file storage boxes and 2 additional file cabinets. The space reclaimed in my home office was a room and a half. The major scanning was done by a part time person and I took all the documents to a certified shredding facility as it was too much to handle inhouse. Currently, we are able to keep up with the small amount generated. It is so freeing! I do have multiple backups in a fireproof safe and offsite in my safe deposit box. I also have two monitor, side by side, on my desktop to have current and prior year returns open simultaneously. I can also look at the pdf copies of documents any time. I did purchase Adobe Pro and a Scansnap scanner. Good luck to all who pursue this path. I am so glad I did and wish I had done so sooner!

Yes. In Pub. 1345, page 30, it states that "EROs may electronically image and store all paper records they are required to retain for IRS e-file."

Now that sounds like something I can do. And I can network my main computer so as to share a folder to send and receive. I will definitely look at that option after I finish these extended returns. There is likely to be the full fax function and a modem on my older machine. You do use a modem, don't you? I have extra monitors, too, even an extra flat screen that would work. Thanks, taxit! -
