  1. Since you co-signed the original loan, you are equally responsible for the amount on the 1099-C.

There is no way to avoid it.  Pay it and sue your ex for her share, in small claims court.

First hand experience here, so I know my advice is sage.

I am requesting that ATX make the  E-file of Oregon Form 41 (Fiduciary Income Tax Return) available.  I am tired of explaining to my clients why they are able to E-file the Federal Form 1041, but must paper file the Oregon Form 41.  Oregon has made E-fling of this return available for several years now and ATX is behind the times.

This discussion board is NOT connected to ATX whatsoever.  We are just a group that started, because we all use/used ATX software, and help each other out with tax issues.

You will need to contact ATX directly.

    Good Luck.

Do we need to contact each client to let them know this happened? For tax year 2018 only or previous years, too? ATX only or payroll/1099 clients as well?

Only if you want to spend hours answering all the questions that will arise.  Most of which, you will not have answers for.

    Simple answer: NO.

  4. The check bouncing is a matter between the client and his/her bank.  You have no part in this.  You should have related this to your client right away.

Now the client has you wrapped up in the middle of HIS/HER problem.  Tell them so, and back away...

You are NOT responsible for their checking account and/or balances. PERIOD.

  5. Get as much RAM as the motherboard will handle.  Never too much RAM.  16GB minimum.  If the motherboard will not hold this much, find a different machine.

This is not an area to skimp on.  Bigger & Faster are all good for your business.  Chalk up the cost, to the cost of doing your business.

Agree with ILLMAS about the SSD.

I transmitted a 2017 return to EFC. It was rejected - error message was "Year in Submission ID is incorrect: "2018" should be '2019". Is there way way to change the year?

    1. Delete the 1040 EF INFO document from the return.
    2. Delete the State EF INFO document (if applicable.)
    3. Close the return
    4. Open the return.
    5. Click on the large E-file Icon in the top bar
    6. Click to allow the addition of e-file forms.
    7. Fill in the appropriate information.
    8. Re-create the e-file.
    9. All should work just fine.

I am moving soon and wonder if I have to update my EFIN information with the IRS.  Looked online and read IRS pubs.  Not clear.  Does anyone have experience with whether this is required?

EFINs are address specific.  Yes, you will have to apply for a new EFIN, if you move.

I thought the season went really well until yesterday.  Yesterday was nuts!  I went home Sunday evening feeling totally prepared for Monday, but Monday came, and it was brutal.

The software (ATX) was slow this year and crashed multiple times a day, but once I started shutting it down after every few returns and restarting (a suggestion from Abby, I think), that problem mostly went away.

As always, I was super grateful for this Board.  Working solo, it's nice to have a 'firm'!  I have amazing staff, but no other preparer.

I hope each of you gets a little down time this week!

I'm curious . . . I filed 365 returns (all types) and have 70 extensions.  I know there are people here who did many more returns.  If you're so inclined to share, what does your practice look like?

Jim (who did 1000, I believe, and briefly outlined his system in an earlier post) might need to do a seminar ;).

    Best to all of you!

If your program was crashing multiple times, you need to check anti-Virus and other "system protection" software to see if it is causing the shutdown.

We have done 2,500 here at the firm, and have experienced crashing, only when I tried to open 3 returns at a time.  Maybe 20 times, all season.

Also, if your computer hardware is more than 2 years old, REPLACE IT WITH NEW EQUIPMENT that has all the specifications to handle the new program.  Do NOT SKIMP on the system, due to price.

  9. I, brow beat him till he lowered his prices by 60%.  "You have many competitors"  "I have been your customer for 20 Years.  "Many of your competitors have very easy conversion." "I am not afraid of conversion."

  10. Many Payroll companies software will not allow a specific percentage.  I always recommend Single and ZERO exemptions, plus $XX per pay period, if needed.

Many payroll people in companies, have not clue about what we are discussing, causing even more frustration.
