No, it has not been extended past 12/31/17.

It is still part of a potential TCJA Technical Corrections/Tax Extenders Bill, which still shows no sign of movement in the current Congress.

    Agree 100%

Hey Jack, whats the possibility we can get atx to put both pages on 1 sheet. I tried duplexing but wind up with pages not where I want them.

Better chance of you getting hit with a meteorite....

That is why I only print from my .pdf file I make, of each completed return.  From the .pdf, I can duplex any page to any page.

In ATX, when you hit print 1040, all six schedules print.  There's no selection of the schedules to print or not print.  Just as well, I too don't know where everything is so might as well have all six schedules printed whether there's anything on them or not.

My print function, in ATX, only prints schedules with information on them.

Check your printing preferences in your preference settings.

If the fee collect form was not attached to a tax return before it was was submitted and accepted by the IRS,

how do I get paid by Santa Barbara Bank?

There is no way for you to get paid by the bank.  You will need to get payment from the taxpayer.  Their refund will be the total amount shown on Form 1040.  No "Do Over" on this issue.  It is one of the reasons I do NOT use any bank products.

I am returning to the group.  I've missed many of you.  If I have any problems with monitors I will deal with them on a private one-on-one basis.  No worries!!  Glad to see you back, and I've got your back!  Go forward with gusto!!

On my way to Pittsburgh for a tax seminar, I had an attack of gallstones and resulting pancreatitis.  I have been in the hospital ever since.  Currently at a rehab facility outside Nashville and hoping for a successful procedure on the 21st of February.  No tax appointments before March 1st and I am sure I will lose some clients.   I have great friends helping me out.

In spite of everything, I did learn a great deal of section 199A.  I hope many of you will help with this.

Don't underestimate the goodness of your friends.

    Best regards

    Edsel  (Ron Jordan)

    tells me

    • trying to buy a house
    • needs tax return for mortgage company
    • says w-2 shows 21,000 for job as pizza delivery
    • says he made 14,000 on top of that in tips
    • told him about tip reporting.. he told me it was done
    • wanted me to pick up 14,000 unreported tip income, i suppose to qualify for loan
    • did not feel comfortable about this. suggested he talk to employer about tip reporting and i passed

is how i handed it reasonable

This is what he gets for avoiding taxes on the tips he made, but did not report.  His employer is going to tell him to take a hike.  It would cost the employer money, to change the W-2.  His avoiding tax puts him AND his employer at risk with the IRS.

    You did good!!

  7. Here is the e-mail from my client...

My daughter, who is no longer a dependent, received a 1098-E for the interest paid on her college loan.

I co-signed the loan and am legally required to pay on the loan.  My daughter is not paying on the loan, and has in fact never paid on the loan.  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board made it clear, with the threat of garnishment, that I must pay the loan.

The interest is close to $4000 a year.  I have not been submitting this form or claiming this on my tax return.

Question: can I claim this interest on my returnThe 1098-E has her name and social security number on it.  But I am the one making all the payments.

    My response:

    Here is your answer…

The 1098-E has her name and social security number on it.  Therefore, she is the only person that can claim the deduction, on her tax return.  Who makes the payments, or the situation involved, is irrelevant to the IRS.

He is adamant that he can take the deduction.  Is he right, or am I?

I always wonder why preparers want that checked. That means ONLY that the IRS will call you with questions, which might be easier for the IRS to pick up the phone versus a formal audit. Maybe it is just me, but I do not want to get calls from the IRS because I will think they are scammers. I prefer a letter to my client and then I ask them to sign a power of attorney.

It has allowed me to discuss many returns with the IRS.  The rule is not cast in stone.  Once, one year is past, it has no value whatsoever.  At that point, only form 2848, and a credential of E.A., CPA or Attorney will get you any discussion.

Anyone else think ATX should hire Jack as a customer service rep? He is much more timely with his responses and much more helpful.

They won't hire me.  My mindset is not like theirs.  I have attempted to get hired, to help design the software, and teach "Customer Service" employees how to be "Customer Service" employees.

  10. Check your Windows update.  2018 requires netframework 7.4.2.  It would have been included in a Windows update.  Without the updates, you would have 7.4.1.

I had exactly your problem.  Updated the netframework, and BINGO! works just fine.

    Trust me on this one.

That is EXACTLY my point.  They have jobs that pay better than what most of us make.  Those jobs come with benefits most of us can only dream of from afar.  They can NOT be fired,  under usual circumstances, even if they goof off all day surfing kiddie porn, very much UNlike you and me.  But people are bemoaning their fate as if they are being made to walk the plank into shark-infested waters - when what they are facing is far LESS than a regular garden-variety lay-off.  With NO guarantee of call-back, NO guarantee of back pay eventually, and no one publicly mourning their dire fate.

Sorry; they got nothing from me.  NOTHING.  I've faced nasty lay-offs too many times, where I quite literally had NO idea where my next job was going to come from, or how I was going to survive until then, with no savings (used up in the last lay-off and just barely caught up to zero with no reserves yet) to help at all.  In desperation taking crap jobs doing what I did to put myself through school, running a cash register at nights at a gas station ALONE (young and female), substitute teaching knowing I was working that day because of a phone call at 4AM, day-work bookkeeping via an agency running a paper-tape calculator.  Quite a come-down from the supposedly well-paid engineering jobs I had spent years qualifying for.  Work a high-school dropout could do.  All for minimum wage but nowhere near 40 hrs/week - not just for lack of work, but also because I had to keep up the job search.  Yeah, it sucks being out of work.  It sucks worse when you don't have a call-back with pay waiting for you in a month or two.

    I got NOTHING.

I agree with you 100%  I want my voucher to get free meals and food, as well as a promise of backpay, if I should get furloughed.

My question: What did they do with all the extra money they have earned for all the years they have been government employees.  Smart people have 6 months living expenses in a rainy day fund.  If they don't, too bad, so sad.

Really....anyone who watched the process of this bill getting butchered by the Washington political process knew it was going to be a cluster fudge.   SNAFU is a very appropriate acronym for the tax laws of the US.

  13. If the streaks go all the way down the page, the contamination is stationary (on the glass), since it does not move.  If it were on the rollers, it would not be straight and would not go all the way down the page.

the contamination can be clear to your eye, but show black to the scan.  Look very closely, and clean very thoroughly & carefully.  It only takes a tiny bit, to cause a streak.
