    Code DD

A client has come in wanting to deduct some $11,000 plus in employee health care premiums. She got this amount from her husbands W-2 which clearly shows it under code DD in box 12a. As indicated on the W-2 this amount is not taxed. I can find nothing indicating the premiums are deducted through a Cafe 125 plan but it would appear these are deducted pretax and are therefore not eligible medical expenses reported on Schedule A. Any input would be appreciated.

    ATX

I can't speak for anyone else but my decision to stick with ATX appears to have been correct. I could not believe such a large company would not move aggressively to resolve the issues with their product. My software is working ok and oddly enough this on a slower computer (I am a patient person ). It's also great to be a member of such an astute forum whose members fill in my gaps .
  3. Gileam the return would roll over but on opening in the 2013 program I got the following message " the program has encountered an unexpected error and will need to close". A tech at ATX imported the file there and got the same message with the result that they could find no solution. I finally gave up and created a new 2013 file and made an error in the client's name. Not the first I have made in over thirty years.
  4. Alas, this is really embarrassing. This return would not roll over. In recreating the return from scratch yours truly misspelled the clients name by one letter. Oddly enough this individual has been married for a couple of years and the folks at social security have not notified the Service of this change in all this time. Still it was a dumb mistake. Thanks for your info I may very well need it for a different client.
  5. Rarely do I ever have efile problems. A client has a Social Security card whose married name has four complete words the last two being hyphenated (nothing like being highfalutin). Her former single name was used in 2011 and 2012 with no problems but is now rejected. I have sent her now married name deleting the hyphen but ,alas, it still will not go through. I am wondering if there is an ATX number other than routine support I can call. Perhaps they could call Andover and get this matter resolved.

    DCN

I note a series of letters on my Document Control Numbers. Something new or mine defective?

    Efile Reject

I recently received a reject on an efile submission noting a mismatch between the client's name on file and her now married name. I resubmitted it using her maiden name from the prior year. I checked the IRS site for a name change form to include in her efile but a couple of searches produced nothing. Do any of you know a form that addresses this issue ?
  8. Just wondering how to send a message to an individual member on the board. I notice I received one or two and realized I am not familiar with this feature here.
  9. Thanks guys (or ladies ). I'll need to check the son's dob again. He may slip by for one more year.
  10. A client who farms as a sideline employed a son (age 18) on the farm last year and paid him a bit over $4,000 for his labor. He did no social security or withholding of any kind. In past years he paid him nominal amounts but his son is now in college so he paid him as indicated. I looked about for a possible exception for employed family who are dependents to see if the social security taxes can be avoided and have found nothing. About the best I came up with is filing a 1099-Misc and let him pay the SE tax. Should anyone know of a possible exception please advise.
  11. Well here we are a few days away from our state ready to process mailed returns and "not approved for paper filing" still watermarked on our forms.
  12. I never enter my practitioner info on my personal return. In past years it rolled omitting this information on my return. This year it placed it on my return. Trying to override and delete it does not look as if it will work. Does anyone have a solution for this ?
  13. I coded it 7 and entered the taxable amount fields. However, I did try adding a new payer forgetting it had the same federal id as an existing payer although the name was slightly different (same fiduciary). Sigh
  14. In entering information from an IRA Form 1099-R I find the taxable amount to be reported on line 15b does not show. The correct amount is reported on 15a but the taxable amount does not carry from the ATX info form to the 1040.
  15. Thanks for your info. I have tried both of those with the same negative result.
  16. A return I attempted to roll over was rejected noting that the "calling thread must be STA". I am wondering if there is a solution or I'll just need to open a new return in 2013 reconstructing the return manually ?
  17. It was included in ATX 2012 so I kept one for each mail filer. Good to know we don't need to use it any more. The Department seems to lack folks to man the phones much less check practitioners for this form in their files.
  18. I do not see this form listed in our software for 2013. A query to the Department of Taxation produced a (duh?) from the associate I spoke with. For my part I am going to assume the state no longer requires it. If any fellow Virginia practitioner knows otherwise would you please advise.
  19. Thanks Jack. I tried that at tech's instruction but did not help. It's possible these two files are somehow corrupted and I will simply have to create a new return in 2013 program for each manually inputting the needed info.
  20. I have rolled over a number of returns all successfully except for two. These are shown as having been rolled over successfully but upon being opened the above popup appears and I have to close the program. I have reopened the 2012 program and saved both and re-rolled them with the same result. To date tech support has found no fix. Has anyone else had this particular problem and knows a solution ?
  21. I am wondering what the Windows UAC is. With two returns my ATX program will not open them. A popup indicated some conflict with Windows 7. Perhaps if I toggle the UAC off it may help.
  22. Thanks all. may be using two machines this tax season and the forms up top work better on a 17" monitor although it may be headed to the Salvation Army.
  23. In working setting up the 2013 program I noted a toggle for positioning forms at the top of an opened return instead of on the left side. Of course, I now cannot seem to find it. Can anyone advise on this?
  24. Oh ! Like with my last ladyfriend. I tried it and mine passed with flying colors. Thanks for the info.
  25. I have never felt it necessary to send a test efile message to ATX. However, with all the needed hardware upgrades and the like it occurs to me it may be a good idea. Is anyone familiar with how this is done?
