  1. I just hadn't seen that box before saying I was not connected to the network when trying to save a return. Fortunately I had only cleaned up some forms from previous year(something I need to let them know to change for 2013 if possible but since its a form input software I don't know if that is possible) that were no longer needed. Not to get off track but it is very annoying that forms roll from one year to next that need to be removed. I guess this is a downside to form input software opposed to input screen input.

Oh GOD.....if their servers are as good as ATX 2012 then my 3yr old could probably hack into the system.
  3. Just worked on a return and it tried to autosave and I got the message I was not connected to my network and the return could not save. Waited a few minutes tried again and it said same message followed by the lovely ATX crash pop up box/screen. It appears I am screwed on the data I previously entered but is there a fix to this out there? And before anyone says anything....yes I was connected to network as I clicked on shared folder to verify.

We receive 10% electronically and that is only when a client comes in before their K1 or 1099s are ready. I have received emails from accountants that prepare k1s for LPs that is a link to their firms website and you login to retrieve the k1s. Seems to me that is a lot of effort just to post k1s for members/partners/shareholders on a website. I just noticed recently in 2012 and also in 13 beta that you have an option to print to PortalSafe and thought it might be a way to put their return out there for them to log in to retrieve. I assume PortalSafe has a certain level of encryption to protect the files.

I have not had a chance to play around with this feature or even read what it is capable of doing. Has anyone used this and if so what is the learning curve like? Is it just a cloud like application you can put files for clients to access with a login? If this has been addressed feel free to direct me to that thread.
  6. I know....I have 1 this year that might get kicked out they couldnt find their return from 4 years ago so we winged it. If disallowed they at least get Hope.
  7. The problem with this is we are just now getting to the point in time where people are using these funds so it will become more of an issue.
  8. This is out of state tuition so the $6000 of taxable distribution is a fraction of the full tuition.
  9. I am having them send the supporting doc's from school. I just want to know going forward how to avoid this. The 1040 only shows how to report if not used for qualified expenses but nowhere does it allow you to report the use of the gains were for qualified purposes. Of course the gov't will assume its not for educational/qualified purposes just like they do when a stock sale is not reported.
  10. If this is answered somewhere already just direct me to the response as I was not able to locate one. How do you handle this if all expenses are for education? My understanding is you only report earnings if pulled out for non qualified expenses. A client received a letter asking for tax and penalty and all funds were used for college for his kids so the gain was not reported under other income. Is there a spot you include the qualified expenses I am not seeing somewhere?
  11. I made my opinions very clear as I was more focused on my issues than the 3 assignments they gave us.
  12. I guess a way to address this is by asking if I am the only one having serious speed/lagging issues? I would assume the only way to determine if its a universal issue is for multiple people to try creating the same type of return and report back their input times. Has this experiment or one like it ever been done before?
  13. It was already marked as we must have marked it back in January or something. Playing around with it checked or unchecked actually had little to no impact on speed as it relates to entry of data and moving between fields on the k1 input and rental input. What type of changes in performance has anyone ever notices as it relates to that box being marked or not?
  14. I spoke with management at ATX a little while ago and they are passing this on to development. I just do not know enough about development/programming that would cause an individual file size to slow the operation of the software. A hurdle management has to get over is telling a developer their baby is ugly or has a defect.
  15. I had a few minutes to spare today and tried an experiment. I had been working on only old returns in the past that had been rolled over for my testing. Today I started a return from the beginning adding a w2, schedule A, and a schedule E pg 1 rental activity. In the past (working in existing returns) when I went to put data on the schedule E it would take 3-4 seconds to respond to a key stroke before moving to the next cell. On the schedule E today in the new return response time was below .5 seconds....almost instantly. Now is where I found the limitations. I then added a K1 and put $1000 on every line 1-11 so it would populate multiple forms(sch d, 4797, 8949, straddle...etc). I went back to the rental activity and entered amounts and it took 3-4 seconds to respond again. It appears as the file increases in size the response time slows. According to a client that does programming and our IT people this is an issue with the software not clearing its cache. I wish there was someone in development I could reach to see if this can be resolved.
  16. You need to let Jack know that about me as well. He is so protective of ATX like it is his child and got offended when I was not convinced anything good came out of the CAB meeting. Had nothing to do with him but the people at ATX.
  17. Not sure what part of that upset you. Just getting tired of ATX falling back on the you need to make sure your equipment is up to speed excuse. It was more the idea of being told that than it was you as an individual. Sorry to have offended you in any way.
  18. Not sure if Not sure if this is directed at me. I must have hit a sensitive spot with Jack and he has reacted by blocking me. I figured out this afternoon what was causing the program slowness and just want to pass it on to people that can make a difference.
  19. I will not be getting those updates as it appears I have upset Jack. If anyone would like to relay those to me feel free.
  20. I tried to do a return with 15 K1s and a few rentals as well as one with 30 rental schedules. The issue once again is with the speed of processing data. Yeah sure you can do a return with a W2 and itemized deductions and a schedule C but once you start loading the forms with more detailed calculations it comes to a crawl.
  21. Yeah I am a tester. A lot of the information on here and the official site are because of me and the work we did with ATX. Because of me they got in contact with a developer at Raven and determined the software will not properly run with an embedded database.
  22. We all run 2.8 quad core processors with 8gb ram do not preach to me about system specs. When the technicians and developers came to our office they made the following remarks: 1. Wish we had computers like this in our office to test the software on 2. we did not test the software on a domain therefore we do not know what will happen. I know the exact problem and it is still a problem in 2013 beta. As a file gets larger the entry slows to a crawl. I can only assume during this mighty CAB meeting that they did not do any work on complex files. I built a return from ground 0 on up. First I added a w2, then schedule A, then I added a schedule E pg 1. I entered data on the rental schedule and response time from one cell to the next was less that .5 seconds. Here is where the software limitations are met. I added a K1 1065 and entered 1000 on every line so it would populate the forms. After adding about 6 forms including a schedule a schedule D and 8949/4797 I went back to the schedule E rental input and entered the numbers again. This time it took 3 seconds to move from cell to cell. The conclusion is that as a file in the database grows the software does not clear its cache and therefore slows to a crawl. I have contact Jason and Taylor(people you hopefully know from your meetings.) and have a call setup with them to hopefully discuss with Satyan. My issue I have with them is that I told them of this issues back in March and again in July and would have expected to see some improvement in the Beta version to keep my faith up. Instead they are more focused on adding a stupid logo to a letter(who gives a crap), limiting the number of returns you can see in the start up window and having to scroll page to page(once again who gives a crap), and then the icing on the cake color coding the print screen as if my 6yr old is trying to do the printing. Hopefully your meeting was post beta and not pre beta release.
  23. I started a brand new return and went to the K1 and rental property screens and low and behold I had no delay in entering data/moving from cell to cell. As I added more forms (sch d, passive, depreciation, etc....) it slowed to a 3-5 second delay. Anyone else notice this?
