  1. Was working like a charm until 7 AM with a client waiting on me for once. Got the following error... "Can't Connect to Server" - An attempt was made to start the server process, but the application is still unable to connect. Please start the server and try again. Any ideas? Going though things I have done before that solved it (2013) but so far no luck. Did not install latest upgrade.
  2. Started mine in January but once the season starts it's forget about it... Filed the extension tonight as I might take tomorrow night off completely. Then start working on the 11 extensions I have. Just was contacted today from a client who hasn't filed since 2010 (nasty divorce, etc.)... That looks to be a fun project for June I think.
  3. 100 - 110 (business (LLC / S-Corp) & personal. This includes the ones I don't charge for (family). I also work full time for an insurance company which has it's busy season January - May. I really need a full time job that is busy June - December. Fishing / hunting guide sounds just right! I'll have to suggest that to the wife.
  4. Client is a general partner with his father and the partnership / K1's are prepared by another preparer. The other preparer prepares as part of the partnership return a "charged" rent back to the partners. So instead of taking a home office deduction separately as UPE, it's already netted against the K1 income for each partner. Luckily I had asked as there was no way to know the other preparer was doing this and we would have double counted $900 of interest, ppty taxes & MIP let alone all the utilities, etc. if I would have taken the home office deduction also. Is this common place to net the home office against the K1's? It's the first time I have heard of it but of course most of the partnership's I prepare are side businesses so they typically don't take the home office. Thanks.
  5. Maybe it's being a smaller shop (100 clients) but most of my clients send payment after refunds. I have only missed out on payment once or twice and on a number of occasions the client paid me more (~25%) because they felt bad they missed payment. It's always a nice surprise when the last payments come rolling in to the account in May. Extendeds the "tax season" money beyond Jan - April. I also accept CC (square-up) & hold checks on new clients that come into the home office.
  6. A client is a employee of a company and receives a W2 for his/her wages. They also receive a 1099 for "expenses" as the employee travels around doing shows for outdoor clients of his employer as part of the job. Expenses that come through 1099 are just expense $ and not directly reimbursing certain expenses. Long story short... My client ends ended up having more income (from 1099) then expenses (even after home office as he works from home). It's not really a business so I was thinking 1099 should be recorded as other income and expenses should be taken as unreimbursed...? Any ideas? Anyone else ready for the season to be over? It's only March 18th... Usually I don't look forward to the end until April!
  7. For the coworker it was 25k miles per year for the last 10 years (so says client). Another client lost that I don't care to loose. Sad thing is I prepare 6 other clients that are either family of his or referred t o me from his family members. Oh well the bad egg!
  8. LOL...I had one other client a number of years ago say since he carried his tool bad to/from work (fixed location) he could deduct the miles. I responded with since I carry my mechanical pencil with me to/from work (real job fixed location) I can write off my miles.
  9. Sorry about your loss... Ran the TC Marathon this past fall after raising $2,500+ for the American Heart Association in honor of my two grandfathers and the family chiropractor who all passed because of heart issues. I will run it again for the same honor as I know this terrible disease will affect me again one way or another. Again sorry about your loss.
  10. Any one see a significant slowdown on the software the last 4 nights or so? Was working just fine until the weekend when things are just taking that much longer to rollover, open, enter data, run crosschecks, etc. I didn't change anything on my PC as far as settings. Thanks.
  11. Even though I disagree how the tax $ is spent in our country I am here to uphold the tax law.
  12. Feel really dumb... I had moved one of the dependents from the 3rd line to the 1st line as the 1st dependent was no longer claimed in 2013. I had forgotten to change the SS# so it was trying to get approval with the dependent that I had already filed the return for. Thanks for all your help. It was a long week!!!
  13. Long time client is a employee that does tile work. No real office to speak of but wants to take miles to/from home to jobs because he carries the company tools in his car. I'm falling back on the below as to why he could not write off ALL miles but only miles that are to/from the second location of the day, if there was more then one. He says a coworker goes to "The Block" and claims way more miles and has even gotten audited and everything passed. Am I missing something here or do I stand my ground? You have no regular office and you do not have an office in your home. In this case, the location of your first business contact is considered your office. Transportation expenses between your home and this first contact are nondeductible commuting expenses. Transportation expenses between your last business contact and your home are also nondeductible commuting expenses. Although you cannot deduct the costs of these trips, you can deduct the costs of going from one client or customer to another.
  14. It's not the kids return that is screwing things up. It appears someone else used the SS # as a dependent which isn't allowing the parent to claim that kid. So it could be one of the two.
  15. I prepared the parents return and one of the dependents. The other dependent does not have a return to be filed.
  16. Yes I know that the clients dependent return was accepted. The first thing I checked was to make sure I hadn't claimed dependent on their return (student).
  17. I'm getting this same error on one of my returns. Dependent did file a return but I know for a fact they did not claim themselves (I prepared the return). So I have two options (correct me if I am wrong): 1. E-File return without dependent (which one to take off I don't know) and file an amended return after the fact with dependent. 2. Send the return in via paper. I see the red box but it doesn't say anything.
  18. Client was reimbursed (a lump sum of $64k) by employer for moving expenses (MN to MI) that came through on W2 as wages and not on line 12. Going to claim the moving expenses deduction for client but where it gets tricky is the employer as part of the $64 reimbursed client for loss on sale of house in MN ($43k). Total reimbursed - $64k Amount for Loss on Sale of House - $43k Other Reimbursed Expenses - $21k Don't know what the client has spent as of yet on expenses but currently trying to find that out. I assume I don't do anything with the $43k and client has to pay taxes on that since you can't take loss on sale of house.
  19. A client of mine had a failed business venture. Client was a single member LLC that held all the grade A stock. They had a number of investors that held grade B stock. If the venture would have succeeded, they would have all been paid back with interest. Client negotiated the interest to be different with each investor. Payments would have begun after 18 months, but venture closed long before that could happen. Does the client have to send anything to the Grade B stock holders saying investment is worthless? Thank you for any information. This one is new to me.
  20. Don't use it much but when I do I love it...
  21. This only applies to two of my small business / rental clients (out of 10) but if I am not at least part of a quarterly review / "look in" / monthly contact, etc on the financials I won't prepare your tax return. I have one S-Corp client in particular that I have had too many issues with over the years. Starting with no "salary" to the owners who are at the business location (workout facility) almost every day. They are always the first ones in the door and when I ask the questions they respond with why are you asking that or why didn't you ask it last year, etc. Then they wonder why their fee goes up (still below average).
  22. Reverted back to a previous day in the week and now it works. I think I was screwing with the virus software this past week and that may have been the culprit. Program Standalone Yes - 13.2.1226.1 No - Should I? Yes
  23. 2013 was working decently until today. I get the following error upon opening. Have tried to reboot multiple times with nothing to show for it. Anyone? Can't find an old post pertaining to this. "The program has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close"
  24. After attempting a few other fixes that were suggested from Jack from OHIO (THANK YOU JACK ONCE AGAIN) I sent ATX Customer service an email (with a link to a thread on the ATX website). They got back to me within an hour (multiple times) with a solution to my problem. If your having troubles with forms not updating to the correct versions try this... In 2012 go to the return manager check the return box beside the return file that is having issues (I did it for all of them). Then click on returns menu, you should see the options that says to re-download forms select this and select all the forms once this is done open 2012 return and edit something and then change it back to what it was . Save the return and then try rollover again. I didn't go into two of the three returns that I tested to change anything so I don't know if that step is necessary. So far I am 3 for 3 on returns rolled over with fairly quick action also. I can also open 2012 returns accurately also (checked 2 of the 3. Let me know if you have any questions (message me on here is best) and I can try to help. Scott Pugh [email protected]
  25. Couldn't rollover a return in 2013 due to the below... I then go to open up the 2012 return and it says "This return contains later versions of the following items: Form Name = 1040 / Year = 2012 / Version Required = 139 / Version Installed 140. You perform the rollover process in ATX 2013 and receive the following message: <Return Name> was not rolled because of an issue reading the data. Please try rolling this return again. The return contains incomplete rollover data and some forms are out of date or mismatched. Please open and close the return in last year's program (you do not need to save it), then re-open the return in this year's program. HOW DO I get my 2012 program back to the prior version? I have moved to a new laptop so only the 140 version is on the new laptop. Thank for any help.
