  1. I have an AL non-resident return that keeps getting rejected because of an error on page 1 line 5 b, and I really see nothing wrong. Just wondering if any of you have encountered this and can tell me the scoop before I delete this sucker and start over, or just print and mail.
  2. If it is not required to be attached to your return, you can delete it, and override the loss on Sch E INPUT sheet. Might have to do it a couple times to make it stick. I realize you did not ask about working around the form, and I am doing some assuming. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8582.pdf
  3. You're welcome, and I'm sorry I couldn't remember exactly what was what, but I recall that it's not as easy as people think. Yeah, they never give you enough info. Just like my farmer who "sold my John Deere for the payoff". And all the people who sell real estate: "but the check was only blah, blah, blah".
  4. Nothing like getting cornered at church by somebody doing their own return, either. But, you know, they can't afford to pay anybody since she quit her job. Too much stress at that job. Not like OUR job. You would think she'd have a little time to Google...
  5. Oh, so this program has bugs? Bahahahahahahaha, just kidding, I love you all! All I know is the EIC disappears everytime that x disappears, so yeah, not cool, ATX. If only EIC WOULD really disappear, right? As in forever.
  6. Yes, but it's not all cut and dried, there is a little bit to that Form 8815, it has been a few years since I did one, but look at line 7, you may not get a dollar for dollar exemption of the interest.
  7. Hahahaha! Send em right on, Marilyn, I have a nice spot to hide the bodies, right here between my TWO computers that can get ONE return out in only twice the time as last year. I got your Rams and Gigs, right here, slackers. My favorite phrase to hate: "I got a question for you."
  8. I know! That is hilarious after you get over the urge to reach thru the phone and kill them. LOL. Also, they come in to see if they need to make an appointment. (No, for the past 12 years I've done your return, you have not needed an appointment, now get out, get your crap together, and bring it back.) Also, what's up with the people bringing their information in batches? Do they really think that we start on their precious return on the date they started bringing crap in rather than the date of the final delivery? And then I give it at least another week before I look at theirs cause I'm so aggravated at them.
  9. Oh, and I forgot to report, I installed 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and was able to restore returns to three out of four years. Guess which year I couldn't restore a backup to? And, when I opened a big return in 2011, it took less than 30 seconds. I opened the same return in 2012, one minute in, I say to the IT guy helping, who keeps saying the new computer is going to change my life, "It is taking longer, see?" He says, "Well, we didn't really time it." Five minutes later, still loading, he FINALLY admits, "Yeah, your software has a problem." Gets out his little phone calculator, "If you have to wait five minutes to load, on 400 returns, that's 33 hours of wasted time." Hellur???? That's what I've been telling you, dude. The new computer IS helping, but I'm not exactly driving the bus, it's more like a stunt woman riding a plank between two speeding buses, but I am getting good at barely getting by now. LOL. This program is more like a disabled Carnival Cruise ship than a bus. I look at it like I bought a cruise, but I'm getting a camping trip.
  10. Well, my new computer got here. Ordered an HP on Jan 30 with the specs recommended by Jack: quad four processor, SSD, Win 7 Pro, 8 GB RAM. I am able to do quite a bit better. It still crashes some, looks like I get one shot at creating an e-file. I have figured that out and just shut the return and reopen to keep from gettin the smack down. I feel a little more in control that way. (Not really.) Anyhow, boxes are staying checked. Hallelujer, as Madea says. No kiddin, that was taking sooooo much time. So, I have returns on two computers, and will try to slide my chair back and forth and beat the system anyway I can. Lordy, I am tired, as I know all of you are. Crap, I just rolled my chair over my foot.
  11. Is this happening to anyone besides me? It is torture! My shoulder is killing me. Think there is a 12.StickTheLanding coming up?
  12. I think you'll find everything you need in Pub 970, and Instructions to Form 8815. Sorry, it's been awhile, but it's not as easy as it sounds when you buy the bonds. Good article: http://www.savings-bond-advisor.com/the-fine-print-of-the-us-savings-bond-college-education-deduction/
  13. I don't know, but my box was checked to show hidden files.
  14. Thank you, the two I have loaded today are there, but not the other 60 I had Friday.
  15. I never even thought about backing up. I know, I know, I know. And your automatic backup folder is also empty? It says on p. 429 that we have automatic backup. I guess I didn't. I guess I can start re-doing returns. Yay.
  16. Yes, that's the first place we looked. Was hoping it was someplace else.
  17. Yeah, I lost all 60. No, I did not have an external backup. Yes, I am an idiot. Computer geek and I tried to find the ATX backups and cannot. Anybody know where the ATX backup folder might be (of course it may not be working for me), since it is not anywhere we have looked? Gonna have to redo the 12 or so I haven't transmitted if I can't restore. Any other year that would not be such a chore, but you know how long it took to do those 12.
  18. If they use ATX, they ain't skeered. Most have Drake or something.
  19. Yes, I agree. I thought I had nothing to lose when I purchased Drake on 2/07, but I could not get my head around it. I must be a freak of nature, cause many love it, but I decided to keep plugging along with ATX. Well, now, there is no plugging along even. Whew, I am about to decide if I can download ProSeries and work on everybody like they're a new client while ProSeries converts my files, I might can live with it. Never thought I'd say that. Oh well, never say never. So, is ProSeries form based for sure? Do we know?
  20. Well, with 12.8, maybe I will reconsider. I guess we could work on ProSeries 2012 (start from scratch, as if it were a new client) and tough it out until they got the conversion done, right? Joan, I think on a TMI thread you said that Lacarte and ProSeries were NOT forms based. Please tell me I read that wrong, and ProSeries IS forms based. I hated dinking around with Drake. I can't take that. Is that the PowerTax Library that includes Business returns and all states? I had a litte trouble trying to decide what you get with ProSeries Professional. It appeared to me that you get all 1040 forms, and PPR for states and business. So, they will haggle with us? Cause I am in the mood to haggle.
  21. Yeah, I updated from ATX, worked on a return, crashing ensued. I did all the rebooting and stuff. A few times, actually. Swear. More crashing. Decided I would delete the Assets Folder, have done it a couple of times. I delete Assets Folder, empty recycle bin, reboot. Now it wants activation code.
  22. Well, well, should I enter it? Have I lost the 60 returns I had? What do ya think? Restore computer to sometime prior to the update? I don't even remember how to do that, but I'm sure I can do some investigating.
  23. Supposed to be gettin my Super Duper computer Tuesday. Hope 12.8 makes me regret the purchase. And Plan D, I think at this juncture, is that Super Duper computer kicks ass. Thought I would say that since my friend Maribeth did.
  24. This is sorta like saying the Carnival Cruise folks screwed that all up on purpose cause they really don't want to sell cruises. OK, not at all, but come on, ATX didn't mean to do this to us. It's still done, and it sucks, but the theorizing about motives seems a little far fetched to me. And, I don't understand about the Ravens or the Colts, either. Just wanna get a tax return out of this baby while I'm still in my 30's. Ok, 40's.
  25. Yeah, I'd still renew early, IF we have a good ATX2012 program at some point. I mean, you can still get a refund if you start it up in November and it sucks. I might not renew early with another company, though, for fear that they will be in the same mess as ATX is now.
