  1. The bosses daughter lived in NE until 3/1/07 then moved to Kansas City, KS. She worked in Kansas City, KS AND Kansas City, MO. We prepared a KS resident return, NE part year resident and MO non-resident. When we e-filed these returns, we sent KS piggyback and NE and MO as state only. The returns were sent 2/21/08. It was accepted by IRS 2/21/08, NE 2/21/08, KS 2/22/08 and the MO still shows IRS Cleared. Is anyone familiar with this? How long does it take MO to accept returns after being IRS Cleared? How long do we wait to check into this further and if we do need to check, who do we contact? Our office is in NE so we aren't familiar with MO returns.
  2. I was hoping they wouldn't apply. So much for trying to keep things simple.
  3. My son and his wife have decided to hire a babysitter to come to their home this summer. They have always sent their kids to daycare. Both of them work. I assume her main job will be child care, however, I also assume she will prepare at least some of the meals (breakfast and lunch). I'm not sure of the details of the agreement they have with their sitter. Should I advise them to get a FEIN and withhold social security and medicare? I'm leaning towards that - but if unnecessary they wouldn't have to go to the bother. Since they both work, I know they will want the child care deduction. I know the person they are planning to hire (she is 19 or 20 and the kids are familiar with her). She also has some self employed farm income of her own, so I know she files a return herself. I don't feel it would be fair to her to have to pay self employed taxes herself if they don't withhold. They have never done this so I'm sure they would have no objections - they would want to do it the right way. I just don't want anyone to get into trouble if they don't handle it properly.
  4. I had an elderly (legally blind) gentleman come in the office the other day asking about the rebate. He didn't have his SSA-1099 and wondered how to get it. I told him he needed to call teh social security office. He went across the street to the insurance office to talk to the lady that takes care of his business. She called us after calling the social security. She said they told her he needed a 104A and was very persistant that that was the form. She finally came ocross the street - it was a 1040A that she needed! It would be so much easier to help someone that THINKS they know everything if they actually DID KNOW something!
  5. HAPPY DAY!!! My efiles finally went!!!!!
  6. I finally got through. I was told that things are running "slow" this morning. The probelm is on ATX's end and not mine. She told me to try sending it later. I hope things work by lunch time. I don't want to wait until the end of the day and still have problems.
  7. Is anyone else having trouble with e-filing today? I NEED to efile several farm returns today!!! I get this message: Server error: Error: Transmission cannot continue because of the server response. Please try again and if this error persists, contact Technical Support. Error: A fatal error prevents further communications with the server at this time. I have sent several emails to ATX and have now been on hold for 25 minutes with tech support. I really don't need this today!
  8. I just checked the site and it looks like you get one year free Endicia service with purchase of the Dymo printer.

    Form 4136

I just received this from The Kiplinger Tax Letter extending the deadline to Farmers to efile if they have a Form 4136. Their new deadline will be March 10, 2008. You can begin sending these efile returns March 3rd. IR_2008_24.pdf
  10. Pub. 3, Armed Forces Tax Guide Page 12 states this. Armed Forces reservists. A meeting of an Armed Forces reserve unit is a second place of business if the meeting is held on a day on which you work at your regular job. You can deduct the expense of getting from one workplace to the other. You usually cannot deduct the expense if the reserve meeting is held on a day on which you do not work at your regular job. In this case, your transportation generally is a nondeductible commuting ex- pense. However, you can deduct your transportation ex- penses if the location of the meeting is temporary and you have one or more regular places of work. If you ordinarily work in a particular metropolitan area but not at any specific location and the reserve meeting is held at a temporary location outside that metropolitan area, you can deduct your transportation expenses. If you travel away from home overnight to attend a guard or reserve meeting, you can deduct your travel expenses.
  11. I have a client that is a member of the reserves also. It can be reported on Form 2106-EZ. list his occupation on this form as Reservist.
  12. Thanks, I tried that and got a message that teh 4136 still can't be efiled. I guess that answers my question. I forgot I had that form in there but thanks for the info.
  13. I found that and entered the information. Do you know if it will be attached to an efile? There is a box to check if you want to print that statement and I do have that marked. I'm thinking I should just paper file to make sure. It is a farm return with quite a few forms so I would like to efile, but if it's not possible, I guess I won't.
  14. I think I know the answer to this one, but is there a way to attach a statement that you make yourself to an efile return? This is a statement to explain an election 1033 involuntary conversion. I think it will have to be paper filed, but it sure makes things simpler if it can be efiled.
  15. I efiled a return this morning with 3 states. They were validated, but I get the same error message that acknowledgements cannot be received. Hope it is short lived and doesn't mess up anything else!
  16. That is the deadline for farmers to file - no matter how they file. If you wait to efile those returns on March 3 and then find that it is delayed again you will have to get everyone back in to paper file. I went ahead and told my farmers with Form 4136 to paper file. I didn't want to chance it any longer.
  17. That might explain the return I efiled this morning. The signed 8879 form was returned so I could efile. As I was getting it ready for efile, I noticed that the amount due was different. I checked it out and there was a vehicle on his Schedule F 4562 that was depreciated out and all at once it had additional depreciation. I just went ahead and entered zero as it should have been. I hope the bug doesn't spread to any other forms!
  18. It must be a wide range of people being misled. Our son in NE was told that a year ago. I remember reading somewhere that alternative fuel heating systems (his is a corn burning furnace) would be eligible for credit, but I couldn't find where it would work either. They need to get their facts straight and not promise the credit until it is okayed.

    Form 4136

I gave in and did a paper return. Didn't want to, but it seemed like less work than having to do an amended form and I didn't want to wait any longer to see if they would ever release the 4136 for efile.
  20. I agree with you on that. We are in a very small town in Nebraska. I'm sure if we charge any of them it will be very minimal.
  21. Thanks! I have filled that out. Now it keeps asking for county of residence and 3 digit school district. Since she is a non-resident, I left it blank but I keep getting an error.
  22. I have a client that lives in Kansas City, KS. She has a W-2 with income from both Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS. I cannot see where on the MO 1040 to check that she was a non-resident. Can anyone help me?
  23. For some reason it has been cleared to file for estates/trusts. I don't understand how it can be cleared for them and not individuals. I'm waiting on that for several clients also.
