  1. Hey Michael! I would just follow the network instructions for the "server" computer. You can then add the networked computers at a later time.
  2. Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Ended up with tech support - which I must say is vastly improved (based on this experience) - had to run NetSetup in safe mode on the workstation to get it to properly install. Some ordeal! Let the clients come!
  3. How do I check for that? But in general, I keep my computers updated with the latest updates from windows.
  4. XP Home Version 2002 Service Pack 3
  5. Followed all the instructions, custom install on the server, etc., but when I run NetSetup on the networked computer it just hangs at "Installing setup files". Called tech support - they told me to go into Windows Task Manager and kill App.exe, which does "complete" the installation, but then results in: Run-time error '-2147467259 (80004005)': ERROR: Cannot add printer driver (AddPrinterDriver function failed) [sYSTEM: 997 - Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.] - TERMINATED Server is XP Pro. Networked computer is XP Home. Same systems as last year that worked just fine. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!
  6. I found this at http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179181,00.html Q. I'm eligible for a payment but I still owe federal income tax from a prior year. Will my payment be reduced? A. Yes. For this purpose, the Stimulus Payment is treated like any other tax refund. This means that part or all of your payment can be used to pay past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. Q. How will I be notified if my stimulus payment was used to offset an outstanding debt? A. If this occurs, you will receive a letter explaining how the Stimulus Payment was applied. [Added 4/11/08] Q. I am filing a joint tax return with my spouse who has a past-due obligation. How can I ensure that I still get my share of our joint Stimulus Payment? A. In this situation, you are considered an injured spouse. To get your share of a joint income-tax refund, as well as your share of the Stimulus Payment, you can file Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation. You will get your share of these payments, and your spouse’s share will be applied to his or her past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. Your allocation request will be processed more quickly if you attach Form 8379 to your regular 2007 federal income tax return. [New 3/25/08]
  7. Clients have their refund garnished every year to meet past obligations (e.g. past child support). Does anyone know if their stimulus payment will also be garnished?
  8. Yes, I saw that on the IRS site. My question was more along the lines that I seem to remember in the past the 9465 was sent with an 8453 (could not use 8879), but with the new 8453 this year, it was not listed as one of the required attachments. I guess the additional signature requirement on the 9465 is merely for paper filers then...?
  9. Client wants an installment agreement for balance due (>6k). Is there anything special that needs to be done to e-file this? The 9465 needs to be signed, but it is not included on the list of forms to send to the IRS with an 8453. What is the right procedure to follow to e-file and include the 9465 installment agreement request?
  10. Duplicated over on the "General Chit Chat" board as it appears to be more active. Please respond over there (if you were going to respond). Thanks.
  11. Just looking to ensure we can e-file a MFJ return where the taxpayer died in 2007 and we are doing the return for the surviving spouse. I found this in the knowledge base: http://techkb.atxforms.com/TSTKB.nsf/0/113...78?OpenDocument which seems to indicate we e-file as usual with Practitioner pin (Section A). We have been fortunate to not have to do one of these in a few years, and want to ensure we are following the current procedures.... Thanks!
  12. Does anyone know if anything special needs to be done when e-filing a return with an Election to Forgo Carryback of Net Operating Loss? Is it just e-filed as normal with 8879 and Practitioner pin (Section A)? Thanks.

  14. Hi, I recently took over as volunteer treasurer for a local 501c3 organization (it could be PTA or Little League, etc.). This group has never used double signatures on checks. It has always been my understanding that double signatures on checks were "required". I am wondering is this really just considered good practice, or is it a requirement? If it is a requirement, is there supporting documentation. I want to push for double signatures and am anticipating resistance, so would prefer a scenario back with facts rather than opinion. Thanks for any help/pointers, etc.
  15. Yes Wendy - that was it! Thanks!
  16. NY Client has son in MA for college. Student's W2s have MA taxes withheld. On MA 1-NR/PY page 3, form has line 25 income and line 26 tax, but the tax is not flowing down to line 31. Is there something I have to do elsewhere to get the tax from line 26 to flow down to line 31 ? Thanks
  17. >> In the court case I cited << Hi jainen, thanks for your input. Is there a place on line where the court decision can be read? I have found many hits that cite the case, but none that have the actual case. Thanks!
  18. I have inserted the following text into my client letter since the first year we began to e-file (I always use the week closest to 4/15 as my example): Typically, Federal e-file's with a refund that are accepted by the IRS by noon on Thursday are electronically deposited the following Friday (i.e. received Thu 4/10 noon, deposited Fri 4/18); paper checks mailed one week after that (i.e. Fri 4/25). IRS publication 2043 states "the IRS does not guarantee a specific date that a refund will be deposited into a taxpayer's finanical institution account or mailed". Our experience has been that the anticipated cycle is usually met.
  19. Another reference I found based on your leads: http://www.unclefed.com/SurviveIRS/MSSP/entertainment.pdf 6. Grooming and Other Personal Items -- As a rule, these items are too personal; they will generate a business deduction only in the presence of very special circumstances. a. Make-up, Haircuts -- There may be a possible deduction for stage make-up (with substantiation that taxpayer was required to purchase it, did purchase it, and never wore it offstage), but it's a narrow exception. For example, Drake v. Commissioner, 52 T.C. 842 (1969) supra. The Tax Court denied a deduction for make-up to a (male) TV newscaster, in Hynes v. Commissioner, 74 T.C. 1266. Looks like the conclusion is what jainen posted!
  20. OK - I did find a copy of MSSP Entertainment at: http://kalcpa.com/2002%20SBRG/pdfs/music.pdf. It's dated 1994 - I guess that's why I can't find it on the IRS site??
  21. I did find Market Segment Specialization Program (MSSP) on the IRS site. However, I have tried a variety of seaches to find the specific audit guide for entertainment without success. Should I be able to find these on the IRS web site? If so, is there a name/number I can reference?
  22. Thanks for the quick replies. Seems we have a difference of thoughts here. jainen cites a court case where it was disallowed; RoyDaleOne cites a source "MSSP" that claims it is allowed - is there a web site for this? What is MSSP? The leading google hit is Managed Security Service Providers, and I don't think that's it!
  23. Client is the news anchor for local cable station. She gets her haircuts, highlights, and blow-outs provided for free, but is asking to claim her out of pocket expenses on tips she gave at each salon visit. In 2007, she spent $1185 on tips in 107 visits. Would this be considered an unreimbersed job expense (on Schedule A) since it is solely for the purpose of her profession? Any pointers to IRS guidelines governing this scenario would be appreciated. We did search Publication 529, the IRS website, performed google searches, etc., but didn't find anything specific. Thanks!

    1099-OID

Received 1099-OID that only has a number in box 1 (Origiinal issue discount for 2007). There does not exist a 1099-OID worksheet, so where does this get reported, and once told where (I am assuming the 1099-INT tab), what fields need to be filled in? Thanks!
  25. I find that I need to discard the Federal letter and then re-add it. It is so routine now that I don't even notice it....
