I just had a client receive a letter saying that they cannot apply their overpayment to the next year estimates. No reason;; no way to find out why, no way to question the letter, no indication of further correspondence. Now what? I say, "Ignore!". I checked Where's My Refund". No refund pending. Duh!!!

My saving Grace is that I print all of my own. The simpler, the better because I don't believe most clients give it a second look even though I do have it nicely laid out and assembled. I don't plan on moving, but the Power Plant across the road might have different ideas. At the same time, I am playing this game year by year anyway. I haven't done an engagement letter in years and they all keep coming back and bringing others. This is the year that I put an end to the "others". You will both be fine. The quality of your work speaks volumes for you. Best of luck to both of you and don't leave us. We need all the help that we can get.

Did you see this page under "Maintainingyour EFIN"? Like I said, it's been years, but when I changed my address and then when I added additional services, I'm pretty sure that I opened my application and made the changes and had to resubmit it. I don't remember it saying that it was a new application, but it did seem like I was reapplying because of having to "submit" the application. https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/how-to-maintain-monitor-and-protect-your-efin

Thank you for the replies. I am moving from my office building of 25 years to a small room in my house. I have donated to Mission Central 5 computers and alot of office equipment and supplies. I am going to do about 20 family returns and 5 client/friends. My office was doing a little over 1000 returns. I had 3 full time and 3 part time employees. All 3 full timers decided they were ready to retire. Two were with me 35 years and the 3rd 15 years. I do not want to start over with new staff. I will not have business cards or letterhead. Judy, I did see where to click for a new application. I did not think that was correct. I will go back in on Monday to see if I can figure it out. It's a shame when it seems more difficult to change your address and phone number than it is to do a tax return.
-
Great response, Judy. I think I don't really have a problem. Your 'fixes' seem more than adequate and I'm certain my clients don't really care. The ones who get printed client copies of returns just want my maroon (wine color, actually) folder that they have been getting for up to 25 years. I can do that! Thanks again!

I decided not to purchase stationery when I moved and got only new business cards. I do have shipping labels printed with my name & address that I can also use on tax folders, colors do match the folders so it looks nice. I don't use these regularly on folders for all returns, only oddball returns that I haven't printed out labels for at the beginning of the season. For letterhead, I created that as a template in MS-Word. I usually print on plain paper, but if you want it to be nicer without engraved stationery, you could buy heavier weight bond if you think the recipient notices or cares. No preprinted envelopes either. They are either run through my printer, again a template, or I use clear Avery address labels using the same font as the letterhead. I use these on a variety of envelopes including small return envelopes that go with invoices or balance due reminders. I guess it depends on how much your image depends on these, and how much your clients would notice or care. Mine don't care, and the template works better for anyone that gets the correspondence by pdf attachment rather than snail mail. Sorry for the derail from the Efin addy change, and if this portion gets lots of responses,I may move to its own topic.

When I changed mine, it was in the application area. Sorry to say it's been enough years ago that I don’t remember the specifics, but it was as if resubmitted the appication, or that part of the appication.

I hope there is a prompt reply to this. We just signed a contract and will be moving (if it's accepted) in July. I have always had a home office for 25+ years but now will be a different home. I'm wondering now actually if I should just retire. The thought of new letterhead, cards, whatever is frightening. I wonder if my clients would mind old letterhead on the engagement letter. How much can I do without? This would also be the death knell of my fax line. Many changes ahead for us, Taxit!

I am in the process of downsizing/retiring. I put my office on the market and moved everything to my home. I need to update the change of address and phone number for My EFIN. It says to long into e-services. When I do that I do not see anywhere to update these items. Has anyone completed this task and can offer a tip?

On the other hand, these rules strongly suggest that if I prepare any tax returns for residents of Nevada or Washington (states with no income tax) then that income would not be Oregon Income or subject to Oregon Tax. Hmm
-
However, depending on where your client resided your income could be subject to Self Employment Tax from a Transit District or a City. Over $400 of Self Employment Income related to a client living in Eugene would require the filing of a Lane Transit District SE Tax Return and the filing of a City of Eugene SE Tax Return.

The same, and so many of them are being questioned. This was not the case throughout most of the tax season. Some of the questions don't make any sense.

Are you experiencing slower than expected refunds? For years, after electronic filing and acknowledgements, refunds would typically come through in about 10 days. My own refund took about a month. And I'm getting calls from clients who somehow think I can speed up their refund. Am I the only one? or are you experiencing the same.

This might not be as bad as it sounds. The income threshold to file a return for OR nonresidents is about $2,700 single and $5.500 MFJ. That one OR client who pays you $500 is not going to trigger your filing in OR. Or is there some other rule governing tax preparers? EAs don't have to worry about it at all since those who reside in other states can't prepare OR returns anyway. So if you're a CPA preparing an OR return, be sure to keep your price at $5,495.

Sorry, I didn't mean the forum shouldn't discuss it. I meant that "I" personally don't because it will change. I heard that the main objections were to the amount it would increase the deficit and debt, the SALT limitation, and by implication, probably the overall limitation on itemized deductions. Like I said, it didn't make it to the House floor, and Republican senators were already voicing strong objections, so that we know that the Senate would not pass it it's current form there either.

Whatever... Just go ahead and delete it then.
-
This didn't even make it out of committee in the House and why I've always had a policy of not discussing any legislation until it passes.
-
My understanding is that it would be based on where the client is residing at the time the return was prepared.
-
Do you know if a final PY return for a taxpayer that moved from OR be considered a "resident" return for this purpose?
-
Not a surprise. But based on your earlier email they are not going to have out of state EA preparers anyways because they don't recognize our licensure. I don't have any OR clients, and I guess I never will. I will send anyone who asks to you Lee. Tom Longview, TX

Oregon has now adopted rules similar to California. The preparation of Oregon Tax Returns for residents or a business residing or located in Oregon by preparers located outside of Oregon is considered to be Oregon Income subject to Oregon Tax.
-
Thanks for all of the replies. I also got a suggestion from another local tax preparer who has used the free version of MordPass for several years and is well pleased so I am going to give it a try.
-
Yes I have had to do that on M-2 from time to time

TP having trouble reaching a live person at the IRS
GLGACCT replied to GLGACCT's topic in General Chat
Thank you, was able to listen to all the prompts and advise the TP how to get through. TP was able to get through and received a call back within 30 minutes. The system even assigned someone from the first time he entered his SS number a few weeks ago. System works as expected but you have to listen to the prompts or get caught in a loop. Thanks -
You might need to make an entry on the sub-schedule for the line in question (either negative or positive), to force it to reconcile. I haven't used ATX since 2012, but have seen situations in ATX (and now Drake) where I had to fix something using that approach. I think it's ok as long as a supporting schedule is generated and the wording explains the entry. Disclosure and all that stuff...
