  1. David1980 is correct. E-filing early before 30th just takes the wind out of HRB who has been running non stop ads in our area that they are e-filing. So now I can too, and both of us will have our efiles stacked up mile high at IRS and then they hopefully start processing refunds starting 1/30. I am expecting a IRS computer crash on 1/30 when the flood gates open up! It has happened before.

  3. I think we ought to, as a matter of principal, file and amend every one of our client returns this year. With the new MeF, we can e-file the 1040X, so why not test their system to the limit. I think 3 or 4 amends per return would be a good workout for those A-holes in Washington. Let Congress know that they really screwed the pooch this year. Break their system and let them live with the results. Tom Hollister, CA

  4. Taxed - if their in a custody battle how is filing early going to stop the boyfriend from still trying to claim the child and you get the IRS involved with something your client needs to resolve before you file her return !

  5. Just wanted to compliment tech support today for answering me within 5 minutes and solving my problem quickly today. When I fired up my office computer this afternoon I couldn't open my TaxWorks 2010 or 2011 programs, and that worried me a bit. But now thanks to Nick in tech support, both programs are open.

  7. Surprisingly, though I hate to admit it at times, I do believe Jack. The reason being that I posted last week that I had tried it and it worked. Am not brave enough to go for three. Now Rita is going to hate me too and that will completely ruin my day. However she is much younger than me so has more time to get these things figured out.

  8. Hahahahahaha! No, I had not thought of that, and it will be fairly hilarious when I get over the coronary I seem to be having. I sure hope some things get resolved. I have only done one return, super easy, took so long to print I was wondering if I would still be in my 30's when it finished. OK, 40's. I started reminiscing about the good old days with pencil and paper. And abacus. Anyway, I couldn't even find the Return Cover Sheet... work on two returns? Hahahahaha!

  9. I've been playing around with my 'print packets' which you can customize in the Print options (the button to change them is way down at the bottom of the window). A lot of the 'default' settings aren't what I want, so I've been working at changing them to 'never', like for the W-2 worksheet. Using these packets (you can set them differently for client, filing, preparer, and custom) should get rid of the continual unchecking of boxes for stuff that ATX set as default to print, but I never wanted a copy of. I'm finding a lot of neat worksheets & stuff, like the tax summary, that I never knew were there. One issue is that the 'federal copy for state filing' is a default setting to print and I haven't been able to get that default setting changed, so I have to remember to uncheck that if I don't want it.

  10. NECPA, I demoed Carbonite and I will not use it to backup my tax files for obvious reasons. I lose all control when my data is sitting inside a cloud server! What would happen if they go out of business or they have a glitch and you can not access their servers when you need that data urgently (like client is sitting in front of you and you had erased their file my mistake) I got a WD External hard drive with 1TB that I do live backup. I also archive my tax files on DVD each month. This way I am in control of my own data. I always do redundant backups.

  11. Folks for whatever it is worth stay away from Windows 8 during the tax season. My son's laptop crashed running a simple quickbooks program! I am holding on to my trusted desktop with Win XP-Pro until someone takes it away from my "cold dead hands"!
