  2. We should never stop learning. Of course, in our business, you can't, since they keep changing the rules.

  3. Tell them that only works when they use Free File on the IRS website www.irs.gov. All tax prep firms have to use electronic filing which matches Social Security names and numbers to employer records. But when they file directly with the IRS, it bypasses Social Security! [i think I'm supposed to put a funny face here but I don't have one on my keyboard.]

  4. And, it's great when the education is facilitated by people not trying to one-up anybody. Go team!

  5. The last time I updated the program, a little guy wearing a sombrero and pulling a little donkey walked out from behind my computer and shouted "TACOS!"...then disappeared back behind my computer. While that is an interestingg added feature, I never actually received any tacos...so in the end, all this update did was make me hungry. Hopefully, ATX has addressed this issue in today's update.

  8. Programmer by day, baseball official for avocation. http://www.naso.org/Resources/TaxTips/Expenses.aspx http://www.naso.org/Portals/0/TravelExpenseConsiderations.pdf No home office, no transportation deduction when leaving from home. If one leaves their primary location/job for a second location, you can deduct transportation expenses. The only time I do not leave my first job for my avocation is for training meetings, although that is changing after reviewing this information...

  9. LOL Jack -- no Holiday Inn Express. Pistol match that our team lost by TWO points, then home. I don't think the ex-partner is in a position to refi the loan. Perhaps the best thing for this guy this year is to put his returns on extension, work with the ex-partner (still a friend) to fix the loan problem *somehow* -- then file his taxes/get his refund several months after that has been done. Three years to claim refunds...

  10. Sounds more like creditor/lenders than stockholders. I would recommend talking to a lawyer before sending any letters to other investors.

  13. How about that? Although I have never actually dealt with this situation, I was just SURE that such mileage would be a deductible expense. Now I see that it is not. I am now smarter and can provide yet one more example of how this board has made me so. I have referee clients but never any that had mileage....Now if they do, I will know how to handle it!

  14. JB, I like you a lot, so don't take this as a slam or a knock at your abilities. You are dead wrong. Schedule C is for self EMPLOYED persons. They employ themselves. And it is commuting if he does not have an office in the home. This is why we have to document the OIH "regular and exclusive use" so closely for our clients, because the thing the auditor is normally trying to get rid of is the mileage, not the little bit of mortgage interest, depreciation and utilities that the SE taxpayer is getting on his office. It is the mileage that is the big ticket on that form. Establishing an office in the home opens up the mileage deduction. Tom Hollister, CA
