But that doesnt help rollovers.

Ive been basically paperless for a while. Scan all docs, use note fields and other notes all tripple backed up including the cloud. Its a bit more work at first but has become almost second nature. Having only about 100 returns makes it a bit easier too.

Thanks Taxed. I did see that it can import .pdf files. That appears to be a viable workaround if the scanner isnt recognized. Just need to check the naming, like you pointed out, so it imports it corretly.

I believe that was me Doug. I have a six year old Brother Inkjet All-In-One printer, copier, fax & scanner. I does work but doesnt have near the features, is much slowers and not suitable for scanning a high volume of documents. Thats why I bought the Cannon last year. Will the Cannon be functional?

Doug, I thought this might be a good thread for those of us unable to get our scanners to work with the TRX 2012 File Cabinet feature. That way Doug can have them all one place (assuming there are others) without having to look in various threads. Im using a Cannon "CanoScan LiDE 110" scanner (TWAIN compliant, purchased in 2012) and havent been able to get it to scan using the "File Cabinet" feature. When I attempt to scan I get the message "error in scanning doc". I dont think the software is even recognizing the scanner. Details can be found here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/scanners/photo_scanners/canoscan_lide110#Specifications I really like this scanner. Affordable, functional and runs off the USB port with no additional power needed. If anyone is interested here is the Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-CanoScan-4507B002-LiDE110-Scanner/dp/B003VQR1UC

"They should just focus on sells where the basis is not known to the broker! Just my 2 cents." Good point.

Raymond James needs to give out spreadsheets. They are a pain for me. Have never attached a .pdf for fear of problems. I cant understand why in this day and age with all these companies having hugh IT departments that they cant do this. We have had spreadsheets for over 30 years and they cant get thier software to convert.

Pennsylvania Local Earned Income Tax Forms Missing
Crank replied to Crank's topic in OLTPRO / OneDesk
Thank you. I appreciate it. -
Doug, When I spoke with Tech Support when I first received the software I inquired about forms for Pennsylvania's MANY local taxing authoritites and was told they would be included with the Pennsylvania return. I just downloaded the Pa forms and I dont see it/them. Pennsylvania is one of a few states that has a local earned income tax and each district (depending on your residence) has its own tax rate. They accept Pa forms to be submitted with the local return. ATX had a seperate form for each local taxing authority. TaxWorks only had a generic local form (they accept a generic local form with supporting Pa forms attached - no efiling) You can view the form in TaxWorks if you go to the State below the EF CTR button in the top left select from the State drop down menu then "PAG". The first entry is PA and the second is PAG which is the local earned income tax form. Items such as Interest, Dividends, Net Capital Gains (Not Net Capital Losses), Rental Income (Not rental losses) are taxable to PA locals. The return does not combine Taxpayer and Spouse income (cant file joint) but does list both a column for the Taxpayer and a column for the Spouse on the same form. This form is very important to me and impacts every return that I prepare. I hope it is going to be included (with functionality from the Pa State) as if I were required to manually prepare this for every client (and child 18+ with earned income or interest or dividends) it would be very cumbersome Also, each PA State require's a "school code" to be enetered based on the residence and the drop down list is in numerical order which makes it very hard to find. It would be much easier if it were able to be sorted in alphabetically. Thanks John

Doug, Detail items for most of the line items would be optimal but i use them a lot for expense items on Sch C & E. They are broad categoies...such as supplies and I like to enter the details for those items. Thanks John
-
Sch C & E really need detail statements for the individual line items such as expenses.
-
I believe I raised this topic in an earlier post but it wasnt addressed. The example I used was Sch A Property Taxes. I like to be able to drill down to tha data behind the number and this was always done with detail statements. It would be a nightmare to have to keep manual records on fields that are comprised of several data inputs. Hopefully this is being addressed.

How long are you giving TRX to fix or jump ship?
Crank replied to beckster's topic in OLTPRO / OneDesk
Hi ReneeinVN, I wish I could tell you something other than what you've stated however, we are all just waiting for Doug and TRX to make good on the promised updates and improved functionality. It appears that other software providers (ATX & TaxWorks) are also lacking this year due to revisions. We'll just have to wait and see. At least you only paid a downpayment. I assume most here have paid the total invoice price as I have. -
Yep, its all online. I knew it was a mass email but I had never heard of them and I dont think cloud tax prep is where it needs to be at the moment but I do think its moving that direction and could be quite common in 5-10 years.

What a bunch of old people. My first computer was a compaq in 1984. It was the size of a suitcase with a 5 in (i think) green screen and two 5.25 floppy discs, no hard drive and if I remember correctly, 512k of RAM. Lotus123 was the softwwaqre of choice loaded with macros. In 89 I moved up to a 10MB hard drive and a modem. And of course I first got internet service in early 1996 and no one else I knew, knew what the internet was. I got my first email address and had no one to email. For the first few days I kept checking it for mail thinking I might get some sort of junk email like the USPS...geez. I was fascinated by this internet thing and ordered a 5 year prepaid dial-up subscription for $250. Oh yeah, and when I was a kid we used to walk to school in the freezing cold over 5 miles, uphill....both ways.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I am going to try to make the webinars however I have conflicting appointments on all three of the webinar times next week.

Got a call from a new client yesterday. He decided that he needs a CPA to do his taxes because he's making so much money that he is paying too much in taxes. He explained that the guy that did his 2010 taxes (located in North Carolina) had him owing too much in Pennsylvania taxes. He has lived in Pennsylvania his entire life and he's in his 30's. When I asked about his 2011 taxes there was a long moment of silence. /seriously considering a line item charge for stupidity/ Havent even done one return this year and Im already stressed.

Doug The Appointment Scheduler does not seem to be able to accept new clients. The frist drop down menu item "Select The Client" only allows you to select from clients whos returns are already started. How do I enter an appointment for a NEW client? If I select the new "New Appointment" it requires various fields such as SS# If I enter an fake SS such as 000-00-0000 then it allows me to enter a new client. The this new client appears in the "New Appointment" drop down menu to enter the apppointment details such as the date and time. After that the date is highlighted in blue on the calendar but clicking on it only brings up a blank new client form once again. If I Go To the "Client List then I see the client and the appointment date and time but not if I click on the date from the calendar. Does it notify you of upcoming appointments? It seems to be very convoluted and confusing. Also there doesnt seem to be a way to edit or delete this "new Appointment" after it has been entered. Am I doing something wrong or is it not working correctly?

CCleaner is a great program. Ive been using it for years and run it several times a day. I also have it set to run when the computer starts (in settings). You can get it here: www.piriform.com Check out the other free programs by Piriform they are also worth getting.

Terry (and any others that are interested), I routinely reinstall windows on all my computers on a yearly basis. I hate that windows gets cluttered with digital junk from installing programs and then the uninstall doesnt undo all the changes it makes, and other misc items which slows its performance over time. Nothing like a fresh install to make your system run smoothly. I always save my backups of tax program clients to disc, external hard drive and the cloud (yes it very anal retentive I know) regularly. TRX TaxWorks backups can be found in C:TaxPrepTY11Backup In this directory are seperate directories named by date and time of the backup. You can restore your clients from the newest directory. TaxWork 2010 backups would be under C:TaxPrepTY10Backup. ATX backups are found in C:Program FilesATX2009BackUp For earleir years just change the year of the directories. Hope this helps some people.

TRX Software - BAIT & SWITCH - REFUND DENIED by TRX
Crank replied to ed_accountant's topic in OLTPRO / OneDesk
Many years ago (15+) I had an error calculation on a complex return and ProSeries paid the interest. The principal was due by the taxpayer anyway. However it was less than $25. The client was very understanding and remained with me but I was embarased and try to check all calculations which in a way defeats some of the reason for having tax software in the first place. -
Thanks Mike. This does support what Doug and others have been saying about TaxWorks and apparently ATX being useless at the moment. This gives me a bit more hope in TaxExact.
