  1. Whoever has more than 5 years of experience should try to pass the EA exam. Why do you want to pass the easy test and be placed at the same level of someone just entering the arena? As I said on another post, when someone has ss benefits and I notice that the benefits are not taxable, I add $50K to the W-2 and if still not taxable, I know I made a mistake entering the ss benefits. I could prepare taxes correctly for so many years but in reality I don't know crap if I do that all the time. In this case, I depend so much on the software and every year that passes I have one more year of experience but in reality I don't even know when SS benefits are taxable. This is just an example. My friend has more than 3K clients and she has preparers who don't even speak English and depend a lot from the software. My friend checks every return but I still believe these people shouldn't be substantially preparing tax returns. TESTS will eliminate these people and I am glad the IRS is testing. I just became EA and I was required to take CPE credits. I was affraid that I was going to need to study. Those CPE credits are a joke and only cost us money. I took a webminar that my 3 year old daughter could pass. They asked you about 6 questions with no wrong answers.
  2. 13K gift and the rest taxable???
  3. Nice pictures. Thank you for sharing with us. Merry Christmas.
  4. Just in case you are interested in installing the network fresh. When we install ATX on our computers, (I believe it started a while ago, maybe 3+ years) we install the server version of a network installation. Since we don't have a second computer (my case), we use our server and network version as a stand alone installation but in reality it is the "server and network" portion of it. If you need to expand it, you just install the other computer from that ATX folder and you will have the truly "network" version of the installation. In short, we all have the network and server portion already installed, we just need to add a networked work station.
  5. Computer exams for EA are harder. I took the 4 exams on paper and without calculator and passed in 2006??. I didn't registered. I passed the computer exams this year and I believe the computer exams are harder.
  6. I am a member of NATP and it is a good organization. Everybody should join them.
  7. I get the same result on both calculators. How much do get? It is hard to understand what you mean by "Where is that .004 coming from?" when we get the same results from both calculators. Is your ATX program updated?

Welcome. Post your ATX or tax question now before it gets busy. This is an excellent free forum and we make donations whenever we can. I have learned so much on this forum and I believe you will also benefit a lot. We always want extra help answering questions, so your inputs will be appreciated. I better stop talking, otherwise you will get confused and think I am getting commissions from the forum. I just became EA in June 2011 but most of us have been using ATX for a while.
  9. I think the problem is that you are planning to make at least 3 trips for the exams. Study hard and take all 3 in one day. When I took the paper exams, I passed all 4 in one seating the very first time and I didn't have all the experience most of you have. If I compare both exam sets, I think, the computer one is harder. I do believe that you could have 50 years of experience preparing taxes and you will have to study hard to pass the EA exams. I think that when we work, we depend a lot from computers but in reality we don't know the rules completely. For example, (I always do it this way). If I see that someone has SS benefits and W-2s, I don't know exactly where the threshold is for taxable ss benefits. If I see that the SS benefits are not taxable, I add 50K to the W-2 and compare. If the benefits are not taxable at this level of income, I know I made a mistake when entering the SS benefits. As you will understand, I would flank any questions related to taxable SS benefits but the software will help me to prepare correct returns for those 50 years that I have been in practice. I will suggest you to take the exams in order, number 1 first, then 2 and then 3. Pay close attention to exam 2 (corporations) because it is the harder one.
  10. Normal transaction as if they sell the property in the US if there is no tax treaty.
  11. I renewed my PTIN today and now the P in front of my number changed its meaning from "Provisional" to "Permanent" since I am now an EA. Actually, they changed my whole number. My number used to be P007777777 and now is P119999999. I guess the P00 means provisional and the P11 means permanent.
  12. Nice reading. I believe my $100 are safe in Citi bank.
  13. Thank you! It works if you edit your original post.
  14. This is the case of 70% of us. We have an aging Windows XP computer and just bought a new computer with Windows 7. You can start with a Windows 7 server and a Windows XP workstation using ethernet and peer to peer. The Windows XP workstation is a very slow computer that takes 20 minutes to boot up completely BUT has ATX installed for years 2002-2010 and has all the data. The Windows 7 computer is brand new and has a lot of power and storage space.
  15. i will suggest you to install 2009, 20010 and 2011 on your new computer. This is what you need to do: Install 2009 and copy the database folder from your old computer. Open an existing return, make changes and save it. Create a dummy return and save it. Print a return. Install 2010 and the exactly the same thing. For this year, you should roll over a return and test it. Install 2011 and roll over a return and test it. You should be done.
  16. The full editor choice only shows when you edit a comment AND it doesn't allow you to change the title of your own posting. I would suggest you to create a regular account and test it.
  17. Everybody should go for the EA exams. States like MD are now requiring you to pay to register with them if you are not a CPA, Attorney or EA.
  18. I don't see where I can select FULL editor, I can do: Bullets i can center or justify i undo (all of them are features of an editor), but I am not sure if I am using full editor.
  19. Is it true that a single member LLC, which paid payroll taxes for 2009 and 2010 for owner's children should amend since the IRS changed its mind?
  20. Thank you.
  21. Johnh, I was talking about this one on my second comment: In this case I think the TP is even with the IRS. "This will work for sure. Let's say that a tax payer comes to your office on March 31, 2012 and he says... I need to file 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. For 2008, the IRS owes $3,000. For 2009, the IRS owes $2,000. For 2010, taxpayer owes$4,500 For 2011, taxpayer owes $500. If you request a refund for each year, taxpayer will owe about $2,000 in interest and penalties. Penalties for not filing and penalties for not paying for 2010. If I apply each refund for the next year, the taxpayer will owe 0. Comprende compadre? "
  22. Failure to pay and file when you owe zero is 25%*2 of zero. The IRS had the money and used it.
  23. I haven't done it but it seems that it might work. This will work for sure.
