I e-mailed tech support with my issue last night. I received an-email from them this morning requesting that I send them the return in question....I will do so when I get home this evening. At least they replied promptly.
-
The is no doubt that a good computer shut down and restart will make things run quicker/smoother...at least temporarily....but I thinlk this has little to do with the ATX 2012 slowness problems.
-
No I changed updates to manual (fortunately before the infamous 12.3 update). I like to choose when to tempt fate.

I think $42,375 is the 2011 limit for HOH....not 2012....I hope this is fixed before it stops me from e-filing.
-
I have a return where client is filing as HOH. AGI is $42765. contributes $1461 to his 401k so receives a Retirement Savings Contribution Credit of $146 ($1461 x .1). Everything calculates on the 8880 and flows to the 1040 correctly. However, the error check is stating the following error: 1040 Error Max AGI when claiming Credit for Retirement Savings Contribution cannot exceed $42375. This is NOT true...when filing as HOH, the max AGI is $43125. I would hate for this error to prevent e-filing when the times comes to actually transmit.

I was thinking that too, KC.....but I do not shut my PC off at night.....so why is it slow only once a day? I open ATX 2012 every evening around 5:30pm.....then close and re-open it several times throughout the evening.....Slow at 5:30, but faster every subsequent opening.....until 5:30 the next day...then slow. Maybe some files/processes remain open for a while after the program is closed....making subsequent opening faster as you suggest.....then maybe some or all of them close after a certain period of inactivity.....making the initial opening slow again the next day. I'm going with this explanation...mainly because I just really don't care that much.....I just want a functioning program
-
What I cannot figure out....Each day, the first time I open ATX 2012 takes FOREVER.....but if I close and re-open later, it opens MUCH faster (still a lot slower than ATX 2011, but much faster than the first opening of the day). "wut up wit dat, homey?" That was from Lenny the Pirate....He's working on channeling his inner "thug" in preparation of some of my rather scary clients that arrive this time of year.

I have used ATX for longer than I can remember (1999 maybe). I only prepare about 200 returns each year as a part-time seasonal business out of my home. Many years ago, I purchased cheaper versions of ATX (1040 or 1040 Office) as anything more robust was just not cost effective. I am an accountant at a manufacturing company as my full time job. Seven years ago, my employer started using ATX MAX as their software....so I was able to go in with them. After this season, they have officially decided to NOT renew with ATX next year....in fact they are not going to purchase a software package at all because most of the returns I now prepare are sales and use tax returns for various states that can be done on-line from the state web sites at no charge. Our Corp return has and will continue to be done by an outside firm for various reasons. This has me exploring options....and this season is making me more likely than ever to "jump ship". I only need 1040, 4 states (OH, IN, CA, ND), and ability to e-file at least 200 Fed and 200 State returns....So IF I remain with ATX, I will just go with 1040 or 1040 Office instead of MAX Are there other packages out there from other companies that are similar in content and price to ATX 1040 or 1040 Office? Any recommendations?

I reviewed my notes from last year and I have recorded that they get gov. assistance for housing (rent), Food stamps, and Medicaid. He does have a car, but is not of any value....all of the gov. assistance plus a $9,000 refund equates to an income of near $40,000/year.

I could use some advice....I have a repeat client with the following household situation: Files as HOH. lives with girlfriend (no income), and 2 children. I'll omit the gory details, but suffice it to say that girlfriend and both children are taxpayer's dependents (and children are qualifying children for EIC and CTC. No other person(s) provided support to girlfriend or children. According to taxpayer, the only source of income for the household is $18,086 from two part-time jobs held by the taxpayer. The situation is the same as last year. Last year, I had taxpayer verify these facts because I just did not see how it was possible for a family of 4 to live on this income. As much as I prodded the client last season, he was believable and I noted his statements in my notes. This year, the increased Due Diligence requirements and additional 8867 page/questions has me worried about covering my butt. I have a statement for the taxpayer to sign attesting to the facts above. In your opinions, would this cover my due diligence requirements? How far must I dig? At what point does my role as tax preparer turn into private investigator? The headache on these types of returns is just not worth the hassle.....I have increased his rate this year in hopes that he will go elsewhere next year.

I want an apology and a discount from ATX. Nothing short of that is acceptable. Even if ATX 2012 turns out to be the best software ever made by 01/30, there is NO excuse for trying to "fix what wasn't broken so late in the year and distributing a unuseable, untested piece of garbage and using all of us as beta testers. I doubt we will get either I doubt I will be an ATX customer next season.

ATX basically released a "Beta" version to all of us for testing. Maybe that would be OK if this were September or October....but NOT January!
-
The program is VERY slow this year....Believe it or not, the speed has improved over the past few weeks. They are promising speed increases with future updates....time will tell. At first, I though it was my older PC...only had 2 Gb RAM. I upgraded to 4GB and my PC is noticeably faster....but ATX 2012 is still just as slow
-
Possibly....but I have to think that if that were the case, they would have stated as such by now. Based on the "improved" product they have released upon us this season, I suspect it is just another short-sighted step backwards. If this "improvement" (and others) really do have merit and there actually is justification for putting customers through this beta testing, then shame on ATX for not communicating things better.
-
No "Unprotect"....another ATX "Improvement" made by a company that has no idea what its customer's want/need.

I have completed 2 returns for clients. Both are simple returns (single, no kids, 1 W-2)....both are just waiting on e-file. My program is actually functioning pretty good...other than just being really slow in every respect. For the first time ever, I actually have the OH state and School district forms needed to complete the returns....that has always been a February thing. Now if I can only figure out what ATX is doing with depreciation in my personal return, I would be delighted.
-
installed 12.4 last night. So far no problems rolling over or opening returns. Depreciation is flowing to Sch C as it should...but depreciation amounts are different than they were before 12.4 install. I do not remember exactly what the numbers were, but I know that on at least one return with a few assets (including a vehicle), the total depreciation is less than it was before 12.4.....not sure why. Other than overall slowness, I have no major problems, but I have only rolled over 2 returns and created one new one. My main complaint is the slowness when trying to enter information in the return...especially Sch C. I hesitate to complain, however, because at least I can open and work on my rolled over returns.
-
WE are the beta testers. ATX clearly lacked the time and/or ability to test the software in a real-world environment....so they chose to release an un-tested program on us for testing purposes.
