Update # 4 and it appears that we still do not have a fully functional program....What a joke!
-
When compared to previous years, I get the feeling that much of the "work" that is done by the software when it rolls over a return is not done at rollover. It is instead done when you first open the rolled over return.....drastically increasing rollover speed, but also drastically increasing time top open the return.....Just an observation from Lenny the Pirate.

I loved the roar...loved Ozar the wizard....hated that damn parrot

Supposedly my bank allows me to deposit checks by taking a photo of the front and back and sending the photo. I have no idea how it works, but I think the first time I have just one check to deposit, I'll try it out.....Usually I hold checks until the end of the week and make one weekly trip to the bank to deposit.....but later in the season when volume is less, this would be a handy feature.

I will admit that forcing me to study for an exam (even though studying was clearly NOT necessary in order to pass) and forcing me to complete CE did actually improve my tax prep skills and familiarized me with some areas that I had little or no prior experience. So for all of the other gripes about the RTRP program.....and there are many valid ones....I will give IRS credit for this...they forced me to become a little better at my job.

All of the additional data on the Ed Expenses is a pain in the butt! I am filling it out on my personal return. My daughter transfered schools mid-year, so I have two institutions and 2 1098-Ts.....load of crap, but I guess its easier for the IRS to detect fraud/abuse this way.

Yes...4GB is the most it can handle....double my current 2GB
-
Jack....Thanks for the tip and link...I just used Crucial's scanner to verify my memory specs. I ordered a 4GB set (max for my system)...this will double my RAM! Not a bad investment of $60.00! This should get me by until I get a new system next Fall
-
Thanks Jack.....I have replaced/added RAM on previous PC's and it was easy enough...but I am always concerned about getting the right kind.
-
The program is also now using much less RAM on my XP machine...I have two returns open and can still work on returns, visit ATX community and check e-mails without noticing any drag on resources.
-
The program has gotten tons better in the past two days...at least for me. Updated to 12.3 last evening and after updating this evening (either 71 or 73 forms...whichever number you believe), I was able to roll over my personal return with Sch C, Depreciation, Ed. Expenses, etc with no problem....rolled over very fast. The return did take approx 3 minutes to open....but that is a big improvement. I am feeling more confident that I can now start entering client information such as W-2s and provide refund amounts. If I can get a few more Ohio and local forms (and the obvious E-file related forms), I'll be good I see what I think is a bug in the error check (stating an incorrect max gross income for retirement savings contribution credit)...but I'll withhold complaint on this until I am sure it actually an ATX error. I even see that Ohio Generic City and OH School District is available....earlier than in previous years. I am still irritated at ATX for using us as beta testers, but at least I am less panicked now. Chaz (the guy who stands on the corner by Woody's Market and drinks warm Corona) is still pissed off about the bunny being gone.

I figured RAM was the culprit....I am disappointed because ATX 2011 runs just fine.....but then again, "disappointed" seems to be the ATX theme this season.
-
Thanks....I have a lot programs that start automatically at start-up that I usually shut down. My old PC only has 2GB RAM (a lot at the time), but I did not think I was needing more RAM.....no other task or program has went anywhere near that limit. I was already planning a new PC for this year (after tax season....Now I Know to not be cheap on RAM since ATX is RAM-hungry. I was just hoping to delay the inevitable move from XP to 7...Heck, I'll probably just dive right into Windows 8 My processor is actually pretty fast....I may just add more RAM...That I could do immediately. I sure do not want to mess with new PC at this time of year.
-
I have all other programs and unecessary processes closed when running ATX....I should not need to do this. ATX has always been a rather memory-hungry program, but never this bad. Again....12.3 did improve this, so I am hopeful that 12.4 will improve further.
-
If this is true, you just made my day!
-
Beta testers usually get free software or at least a large discount....just sayin. This Beta tester would just be happy with software that worked.
-
The last time I opened a return, I checked my system (Windows XP, 4GB RAM) and the ATX software was using 99% of that RAM....ridiculous! That was at 12.1...I did not check last evening after 12.3 install....it seemed somewhat faster after 12.3 so hopefully it is now using less RAM....I am hoping 12.4 improves on that.....because doing anything still takes wayyyyy too long.
-
12.3 installed fine on my XP machine last evening.....still slow but better. I have not tried rolling over anything yet....I'm just too scared. The one return I had created after initial install of 12.1 (just a w-2 for refund estimate) did open faster with 12.3. I think I will wait until after 12.4 to roll over my personal return for more intense testing (since many of the forms are not yet available anyway). Like others, I will soon have a flood of clients calling for appointments. They know I cannot "file" until 01/30, but many will want to bring in their W-2s and find out what their refund is going to be. I hope ATX is running better and that many additional forms are available before this flood hits.
-
ATX has further improved on this by making the entire program crap when you try to roll over!
-
They are deleting my posts that say anything negative about the software...even though I state nothing that is not true....None of my problems are system-related. I am still on XP and I have plenty of hard disk memory and plenty of RAM. I routinely close all other programs ( including security and their associated processes) and ATX 2012 still takes over 8 minutes to do the most routine of functions....and I have yet to roll over a return without problems. These are the most basic of functions that ATX clearly knew about but did not fix prior to the initial release....and now will not have fixed until late in the month. This is NOT acceptable and putting a censor with a cute name like "Kimmie" on their board to remove negative but factual posts does nothing to improve my confidence that things will improve. At least I can post such things here......Thanks Eric and KC. Myself, Lenny the Pirate, and Chaz (the guy who stands on the corner by Woody's Market and drinks warm Corona) appreciate you and this board.
-
Let the other board know that we are here?

I tried to put in a plug for this forum on the other community, but it was deleted. -
I have posted nothing there that I have not also posted on this forum. It appears that they do not like negative feedback regarding their high-quality software. Unfortunately, that is the only kind of feedback I have to offer.
-
Just FYI....many of my posts on the other ATX community are being censored/removed....apparently my posts are just too bad. But hey, their software is top-notch, so who am I to complain?

Chaz (the guy who stands on the corner by Woody's Market and drinks warm Corona) just told me that he is planning a visit to CCH SFS to give them a piece of his already messed-up mind. He just realized that the bunny is gone....Chaz loved the bunny.

Not to mention Schedule C filers like myself who also have depreciation
