  1. I do, ever since I discovered it a few years ago. Before that, I only filed paper forms.
  2. I don't understand why the filing isn't simply MFJ with date of death shown. How does HOH apply at all? I must be missing something (not the first time!).
  3. It's been a while since I've done an installment sale but have you included and filled out 6265? I don't remember exactly the work flow but don't remember it as difficult at all.
  4. Gail, have you looked here? https://www.cityofcoshocton.com/income-tax/ Scroll down the page to General Information, a tax office phone number and the forms. I didn't read all of the information but the form itself shows the due date of April 18. I can't promise that the return will be done for free. I just know that the RITA returns of my clients have been done for free. Coshocton appears to have its own tax office and not through RITA. The information sheet and the return itself seem to identify all the data needed to prepare the return. Many smaller communities do not have online capabilities for filing. RITA does but only for those municipalities that are managed by RITA. Looking at the form, it seems to me pretty straightforward. ATX does not have all city returns. Coshocton is not in my 1040 package. The municipalities package may have it. You can use the OH General City Tax form. I has most of the smaller cities listed as options but follow a complete form from the city website to be sure you don't miss anything. They do work and are required to be accepted by all munis. I hope this helps. Sorry it took so long to answer.
  5. Wow! Fortunately that has never happened - so far! - with any of my clients. I would appreciate your sharing of your instruction sheet for the future. Many of my folks are just so grateful to not have any more interaction with the internet than absolutely necessary. And for estimated payments to not have to remember to pay on time. For those few who still insist on sending paper checks, they are now getting concerned about the rash of check washing rascals.
  6. JJStephens has done a great favor by writing the tome above. Perhaps it should be pinned. That's why I did not respond, no time. There are additional anomalies, too. The 12 day occasional entry rule; the limitation on NOL's including for how long and whether 100% or less - now 50% in Cincinnati; no tax if working from home and the taxing entity is not where you live but taxed when you are working in the office. Yes, RITA is a major PIA. I won't do them any longer. Clients can go to their local tax office where it can be done for free. Or they can do them online now. ATX does have the RITA forms for an extra charge but, as noted, you really have to know the outcome first and check the right boxes. NOL's for different cities are near impossible to get right. There are some good reasons to live in Ohio. There are some other reasons not to live in Ohio and the municipal/entity tax climate is among them. For all the good the state legislature does in lowering state tax, the munis make up for it.
  7. What I said in slightly different words.
  8. Interesting case. But it seems to me his MFS would still be liable for the tax owed and not her. So she would end up with less than the full amount anyway.
  9. This is true but she cannot change to MFJ after the due date of the return. For 2022, it isn't too late. Yet.
  10. I amended a 2021 return last month, e-filed with direct debit. There were no diagnostic errors which, also in ATX must be cleared before e-filing, the return payment form was included in the e-filed forms, the returns (federal and state) were accepted with no messages. I did not ask the clients if the payments were actually debited on March 23 as indicated but will do so this afternoon.
  11. A reply this morning brought lots of information and the statements, yay! Grandparents were the generous providers. I haven't had time yet to comb through for ALL the details and values for earnings only. But I think I have the data to get there. And the statements show all the transactions. I do believe I will be asking for ALL statements since inception, though, as his wages (summer jobs) in 2019 and 2020 may not support the contributions. Thanks for the prodding!
  12. I just downloaded ScanStaight. Will give it a try. Thanks, Lion. It might save me more time and frustration than nagging clients to do it right the first time. Not that I would nag clients...
  13. I also have refused jpegs, impossible to read. In my cover letter and as reminders, I recommend Adobe Scan, free app for iPhone and Android. I tried it out last fall before recommending. It works really well. On the occasion of an illegible jpeg appearing, I remind folks I cannot read it, get an app to scan or send me a copy. The worst was a couple of years of items with heic extension from iPhones. I was able to find some software to 'translate' it, sometimes, but decided to stop doing their work. I do bill time but it was such a pita. Good other suggestions here, I will make a list for next year to offer options.
  14. The client can also get one by setting up their own account. One of my clients has had one for years and tried to tell me it wasn't needed for 2022 return - until it was rejected because of missing IP PIN. Amazingly a week later, client got it from his online account.
  15. Thanks, DANRVAN, for your comments. I am still awaiting answers. I have asked for the statements of the account but not yet received anything. The $250 penalty on 5329 is calculated before showing the amount NOT subject to tax. I have not received that as yet so not sure how much is basis vs earnings. It occurred to me that this should have been a 2021 issue. He graduated in June 2022. Parents are long time clients so I prepared his returns for 2019, 2020, and 2021. For 2021 he had less than $3000 self employment income. For 2022 his wages with no deferrals or company Roth were only $23,180. So wondering how he could have so much in a Roth and not reported previously. And how much could he have contributed in 2021 and still have $$? Hmmm... Something funny here.
  16. Client has 1099R showing code PJ from Roth. He says in July he realized that he was overinvested in the Roth and asked the advisor to make the overage a 2022 contribution. So the codes mean early distribution no known exception and excess contributions plus earnings/excess deferrals (and/or earnings) taxable in 2021 (but the form is 2022). Is there a maximum time limit to make that sort of change? I think I do need to see the statement showing that the amount was then deposited for 2022. Anything else? It means the 10% penalty of about $250 for a new graduate not making a lot of money.
  17. With Verifyle you can set up 2fa which I have not done as I know well all of my clients. I suppose you could have 'secret' questions or video conferencing or any number of ways to verify. All of my clients have to have provided a current driver's license or state ID in any event as Ohio requires it to e-file. I love having this portal and not having to mail things back and forth and having electronic documents. I retired paper documents about 8-10 years ago.
  18. I hear you about so many folks now using only their phone and texting. But signing electronically is a godsend, in my opinion. Very few of my clients ever had functional printers and no one had a scanner. I have been using Verifyle for about 3 years now for $9 per month, a very small price in my opinion. Clients and I upload and download in the secure portal and now I want all communication there and not in email. I cringe when someone sends bank info or worse via email even after being told about the risks. And Verifyle does have an app (everything has an app!). I have added the recommendation to have and use Adobe Scan for any documents that they do not already have in pdf form. I loathe jpeg uploads as they rarely are legible. The scans can and should be deleted on their phone after uploading. There are only a couple of clients that struggle with Verifyle but they struggle with anything computerized and with anything on the phone that isn't doom scrolling. Their 'kids' help them or they trek to my office. This also is not so bad as those folks tend to come early in the season before I'm really busy and bring gifts or take me to lunch. Breathe...
  19. Wait, wait, we get a chance to slow down and scale back, too, don't we? At 77, I'm ready for the raising rates to thin the herd but still make enough money to keep traveling - off to Papua New Guinea for scuba diving April 24-May 11. Stress relief writ large.
  20. Thank you!!! That showed the SSN so now I have an answer without tech support, just super fine colleague support. Thanks again!
  21. I, too, charge extra for 8867 but include it under any tax credit for $25 each. I think that just got increased for next year!
  22. I somehow posted this under ACA, no idea how, but maybe someone else here has ideas. I think I have to call tech support as the help for that field was not helpful. I think I read here before how to determine which dependent had been claimed but must be using all the wrong search terms. Anyone know how to find it?
  23. Wow! How did that happen? I have no idea how this post ended up there as I almost never have the occasion to even look at the forum having so few with ACA. Maybe I should repost where it belongs! Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Lion. I'm going with hacker interference
  24. Thanks for this information. I don't see SSN but there is a 1 in a red box. Here is what the ATX help says: Click the red box. The cursor moves to the associated field (highlighted in yellow). To move to the next field associated with that error, click the Next button at the bottom right of the Rejection Error pane. To return to the previous field associated with the error, click Previous. However, my cursor did not move to a field highlighted in yellow. So do I assume it just means the first listed? I don't need this right now. I guess the client will have to figure it out. Thanks for suggestions!
