DO NOT INSTALL 12.16 if you are on a network!!
Jack from Ohio replied to Jack from Ohio's topic in General Chat
That is FAR from easy! -
The inside of my mailbox is the entire utility room at my house. The mailman never knows anything is there. There are boxes that install in the wall of the house with a large box inside that the mail or tax returns drop into. No issues here. I have a metal clip and a small plastic table sitting under the mailbox lid for outgoing mail.

How Will You Handle Your "NOT" Favorite Clients in 2014
Jack from Ohio replied to MsTabbyKats's topic in General Chat
Significant increase in fees due to "The continued increase in major tax law changes and the necessity for training and classes to remain compliant." If she asks if the price increase is for everyone, just say yes. -
My house had a drop through mail slot in the wall next to the door we go in and out of. It is under the porch roof and drops completely inside the house. I don't have to go outside to get the mail, and it is the perfect place for tax clients to drop information. Search online for mail boxes and you will find hundreds of options that will accent the outside of your house, the documents go inside the house, and they are secure.

DO NOT INSTALL 12.16 if you are on a network!!

After doing all sorts of things to permissions, firewalls, all the other recommended things etc... Me: Now that we have done all these things and have not changed any of the problems, do you have any other suggestions? Him: "The only suggestion I have is to totally delete and reinstall the program. Use the latest install file from the MYATX website which includes all current updates. Then update all forms. Then restore all the returns. Then re-synch the e-file information." Me: Will that eliminate these problems that your developers cannot seem to fix with updates? Do you have reports of this working on a domain server? Him: "No guarantees that the problems will be fixed. We have not had any verification that this process works on a domain server with a large number of clients." Me: Thank you for your ambiguous tech help today. You be the judge. I received similar recommendations from 3 different tech people with the same lack of any idea if it will really help or not. -

Does not import e-file information, and export takes about 45 seconds per file. Import takes the same as restore. You do the math. -
Updates have become like an episode of the three stooges!!

DO NOT INSTALL 12.16 if you are on a network!!

To reinstall is a 3-4 full days operation. I have all the update files as well. I am making a new backup. 3,174 returns @ 20 seconds each = 17.6 hours to create the backup file. If I choose to reinstall - At least 2 hours to scrub all the workstations and server of the program. Then iInstall and update forms, 3 hours. Restore returns - 3,174 returns @ 125 seconds each = 110 hours. Resynch e-files 13 hours. (just did this yesterday) Did this in Feb and lost 25 returns to corrupted backup. These times are documented. Would anyone take the time to "reinstall" not knowing for sure that the problems will go away? These times are on my superworkstation with SSD drive, i5 processor and 16GB RAM. -
If I continue as a Beta tester, I WILL report on my findings regularly!!

Backing up the program files in a Windows based program does not give you the ability to restore. Windows has many different areas that have information about the program, none the least is the registry. Going back to old program files does not change registry entries. This is what the "undo" function of an update would do. The programmers are either too uneducated, mis-informed or lazy to do such a thing. High quality software writers provide the "revert to previous version" option with software updates. -

Restore only brings back returns. Does not change the program. Backup is only for data. -
12.16 - The TRUTH unedited! DO NOT INSTALL ON A NETWORK
Jack from Ohio replied to Jack from Ohio's topic in General Chat
We still have over 200 returns we are waiting for signed 8879s before filing. Many amends to do that were put off till after season and returns continue to trickle in. For the program to keep working for a couple more months is crucial. These issues keep causing huge delays. It is the reason I am still fighting the fight. -
Read my posts about 12.16 update. I was one of the first ones to call, but in the 2 hours I was on the phone, "we have had several other reports of the same problems you are having after updating" were the exact words. Can only shake my head and hope we can finish the season...

The tech people said they were not sure that even this process would solve the problem. You see my dilema... We did this process in February, and it was not a pretty sight. Lost total returns. I don't wish to spend three whole days with only a wish and dream that it will fix the problem. What really chaps my backside is the programmers NOT building in a reversal plan. By now, with all the defective updates, you would think they would know better. More ignorant actions by the development people and CCH executives. -

I have interviews with 3 different software companies next week. -
From personal experience and 2 hours on the phone with tech. 12.16 was released to do 2 things. "Portalsafe" was added as a free offsite place to store files. I am truly impressed by CCH and their applying design engineers time to provide that for me. Heaven knows it is the most pressing problem facing ATX users today. Some people were experiencing a non-functioning back-up of files. This was the second issue supposedly corrected by 12.16 Additional issues brought to you by this latest "fix." I knew more about what the update was to fix than the tech people I spoke to. Good job upper management!! Slowness in all areas of the program again. Program crashes when clicking on the icon to print the return. The return open at the time of the crash loses all information since the last "save." The automatic save function does not. The program erratically crashes when opening returns. Nothing was addressed to the long times for receiving acks in the e-file. The only recommendation given to me was to clear all workstations and the server and reinstall from scratch. I am not seeing any REAL indicaton that CCH wants to "fix" the software. Unless I see major attitude shifts and REAL changes soon, I will rethink my idea of being a beta tester.

Prosystems fx would cost us $20K+. Not in our budget. My decision to lose ATX is very close to being made also. I am making a new thread with information I just found out.

Sarcasm or a rhetorical question?? -
I am posting this several places to warn everyone. Please excuse the redundancy. I am on hld for "upper tier" tech support. When we click on print now, the program crashes. Loses all data in the return that is open. Tried this on 3 different workstations. On the phone with tech now. They are going to get an earful!!!

I have the CD. Just to clear and reinstall, then restore 3,100+ returns is a 3 day operation. Last time we did it in late Feb, we lost 25 returns total. Tech support has suggested that the file from the website is best because the update process is very flawed if you start from the CD. To do a safe new backup, 8 hours. Clean all workstations and the server of all traces of 2012, 2 hours. Install program again, update all forms, 8+ hours. Re-synch with e-file acks, at least 12 hours.
