  1. Drake provides several macros, and you can create your own.

I have macros to answer the foreign interest questions, a macro to insert my PIN and the clients' PINs,and a macro to identify Forms 1065 as SMLLC (and prevent filing it since it is only needed to flow into the State Tax return). I have one that is needed for my PIN signature in the case of someone who opts out of e-filing. I have another one for filing an extension request with zero payment.

I have several others that are more-or-less unique to my needs.

I even created one to fill out most of the EIC due diligence questions--although I don't do EIC returns.

Another feature is the Client status manager: In addition to the ones Drake provides, you can add one to indicate that you mailed it to the client, you e-mailed it to the client, your client is paper-filing, an extension has been requested. The CSM has a column for your billing, and one for payment received which you can enter and a column for balance due from the client.

You can create and print reports indicating name, address, SSN, e-mail address and telephone number of clients.

There are so many features that I'm still learning and making use of new ones every year.

The downside of all of the above is that it takes a while to learn to implement them.

Also, you can use Drake's CWU to keep up with monthly, quarterly and annual payroll totals and e-file 940s, 941s, W-2s and 1099s. CWU can also be used for bookkeeping work, but I would not recommend it since it is almost like having to enter everything like a general journal entry.

Howsome ever, I understand the word macro but I would not even to begin to understand how to create a "macro". why would I buy a software program to do a job that I have to do workarounds like I did with ATX this year. I tried Drake last summer and after the seminar and all that I could not even begin a return and then discovered that it would not prepare my transaction tax reports that I do monthly. I could do those by hand but at the same price for an all inclusive prep program that does not think like I do?

  2. from turbotax support

    Efile rejects 0510, IND-509/512, F1040/A/EZ-510, F1040/A-512, F1040/A-513, F1040A-145, F1040SSPR-512

    Your e-filed return is rejected with error codes 0510, IND-509, IND-512, F1040-510, F1040A-510, F1040EZ-510, F1040-512, F1040A-512, F1040A-513, F1040A-513, F1040A-145, or F1040SSPR-512, along with this explanation:

This taxpayer or taxpayer's spouse has been claimed as a dependent on someone else's return (according to returns the IRS has already received). Make sure that no other person can claim this taxpayer or spouse as a dependent (for example, the parents or grandparents), and that the dependent's Social Security number has not been used on another return as the primary or secondary taxpayer's SSN (the persons listed first and second on the return).

    Possible Causes

    • Another taxpayer has already claimed you or your spouse as a dependent (most common reason)
    • The dependent you are trying to claim has already filed his/her own return (second most common reason)
    • The same Social Security number was entered for a taxpayer and a dependent on the return
    • A Social Security number was entered incorrectly.

So evidently somebody has already used one of the primary ss on another return. Possibility on young marrieds, carryover on parents return, or somebody filed without telling the other party.. usually in our office it is the 18-20 year old dependent that took their own exemption. If all else fails, call the e-file hotline.

  3. I can attest to fact that OS and or age of machines or servers has nothing to do with the interoperability of the software program.

In desperation we upgraded all 3 workstations to win 7 64 bit, with SSD, New server with ssd dedicated only to ATX 2012. Still agonizingly slow. Memory hog? this thing never releases memory, and approaching 1 gig it will crash every time. Lose track of what your intending to do, clients wanting whatif scenarios, not a chance. All in All, while I do not have final numbers and won't for a few weeks, I suspect that this program costs us 30,000 dollars this year. (and it is only April 15, 6 months to go)

  4. After the 15th me and mine could probably give them an evaluation of a 100 items that did not work correctly and none that did work consistently. Programs still crash on efile creation, forms do not update when reopening slooooow lost assets, poor communication within program, I am tired I am still a month behind

  5. If you did not get through, the procedure that works for us is

from within the return look at the return tab

box called imports middle one is assets

it will open box to browse to wherever your data is

    called fam data

open it and there is another data click on it and it will search for the assets.

somehow we have 3 data files. takes awile but so far have always recovered.

  6. So your are CCH and you have been working for a period of time towards this new version of ATX for tax year 2012. For the years this new version has been in development, they have been programming two versions - the old ATX in the field through the end of ty2011 and the new ATX set to debut for ty2012. At the end of tax season 2011, they execute that step in the plan that says stop making changes to the old ATX and do a full court press to get the new ATX out for ty2012. As the deadline approaches, you realize "holy cow, we are not ready." Now what do you do? You have done nothing at all with the old ATX and there is no way to get it ready in time, and the new ATX is also not ready. I don't know what choice they really had but to do what they did and live with the consequences.

The consequences are that I am ready to shoot somebody. I think that if I had advance knowledge of this fiasco I would have been up front about it. Yesterdays update was an improvement until we lost three extensive returns in the period of 4 hours. No auto save etc. Features that have worked for years no longer work, preferences and options are not retained. I have no idea what I would have done with advance info but at least I would have a choice in how much grief I wanted to suffer.
