  1. I'm as uninformed as anyone. I think the individual pays the penalty on his tax return, but we won't see drafts for some time yet. I think the employer pays a penalty if an employee buys from the state exchange; don't know if that will be an immediate invoice or on his tax return. I've been saving my handouts from seminars, but look forward to the logistics getting written down, draft forms online, and another course closer to the date it all goes live. And, I will raise my prices!
  2. I have shot on a range and have decent aim, but know that I would not be able to get a lock-box off a shelf and unlocked and gun out before that robber killed me. I also know that if I were able to take his life instead of him taking mine, that I would NOT be a good person with a gun. I would be a killer and a bad person who had no right to judge his life less important than mine. And, if he wanted my goods rather than my life...well, no court would sentence him to death for stealing my costume jewelry, so why should I ?! And, if I'm at work in another town or on vacation in another state, my gun cannot protect my home, probably get stolen and added to the guns in the hands of criminals. As I say, if my well-trained and practiced Israeli special services friend with his gun at his fingertips could not save his own life from the robber with his gun already drawn, then I know I would not have any better luck. That robber had been in that store multiple times and knew it was not a gun-free zone but chose to rob it anyway; so not all robbers are smart enough to search out gun-free zones, that one got the diamonds and another gun, too. You judged the parents harshly who had their neighbor child break into their lock-box and shoot their son; why don't you judge yourself just as harshly for keeping guns in your house? How can you be more sure than any other gun owner that your guns will never get used for bad reasons? Throughout my lifetime, I've had my apartments and homes broken into and jewelry and electronics and bicycles and money and other goods stolen when I have not been home. Certainly if I'd had any guns, they would've been stolen also. And, if I had any guns, they wouldn't have done me a bit of good as I was not in the same building as the burglar. If I thought a gun cured crime, I'd think about having one around; but having known of guns getting stolen, they seem to add to crime and not deter it. I've watched gun-owning friends decide not to replace guns after they were stolen so they wouldn't be giving any more guns to criminals. I've watched gun-owning friends sink into nothing resembling their former lives after their guns were taken and turned on their families &/or neighbors. I hope that doesn't happen to anyone else, but I know it will.
  3. Fujitsu comes with a software for organizing as well as the full Adobe. Look into what software might be bundled with your scanner.
  4. It's Form 8888 or something like that, so check its instructions to see if it goes with a paper return or not.
  5. Fujitsu has the workhorse reputation now. They also have a flatbed option for that model if you need it.
  6. So, good people owning guns will stop crime? When? It hasn't happened in 200 years. 2,000 years. Why didn't you stop the bomber or Adam or the rapists or the thugs? Why didn't the good people with guns? You couldn't and all your legally gun-carrying friends could not either. So why don't we get rid off all laws that have to do with weapons? Let anyone who wants to go steal your guns or anyone's guns, because guns are legal for everyone to have, regardless of mental or social deficiencies. Let everyone have a gun so the ones you think are good people can kill the ones you think are bad people without any legal repercussions. And, only good people will be left standing, right? Killers, but good people.
  7. My federal extensions went Friday and Saturday, my last returns Saturday and Sunday, and my state extensions Sunday and Monday. All are accepted except one last NC return hasn't been acknowledged, but I have his IRS and CT acceptances in hand.
  8. I think I have all my IRS, NY, MA, etc, acknowledgements back and am waiting on just one NC. (Did CT on their website so printed out confirmations as I went along.)
  9. IRS Delay in Federal and State Return and Extension Transmissions and Acknowledgements Dear ProSystem fx Customer: The IRS issued a Quick Alert late on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 providing an update on the status of acknowledgements for Federal and State submissions. Due to the significant increase in federal and state submissions transmitted on April 15, 2013, the length of time to create federal acknowledgments and make them available for retrieval is taking longer than expected. The IRS is closely monitoring the acknowledgment rates and is working to close the gap as a top priority. The majority of state returns are linked to the acceptance of the federal return, so the length of time it takes to make the state return available for state retrieval has also increased. This is an IRS delay and impacts all software vendors. In the interim, please do not attempt to retransmit any returns or extensions at this time that have not been accepted or rejected. 10. Then evil Adam's household should not have been allowed weapons, according to your arguments. You're saying it is OK to limit weapons in the household of an evil person. Or, are you saying it is OK to limit or even eliminate evil people? I don't see how a gun in a locked cabinet in the principal's office would've stopped Adam with two guns in his hands already out in firing position (the principal was in a meeting in a conference room or somewhere anyway). And, Adam would've done much less damage, probably no deaths, with an exacto knife since he rushed no one, did not get close to anyone; the principal and counselor rushed Adam. What about my neighbor who went to play at a friend's house and was shot and killed by the friend? His parents could not have saved their son by owning guns as they weren't there. And, the friend's parents actually contributed to their neighbor's death by owning guns. They found it impossible to save their neighbor's life by owning guns. Another friend, large and fit and a long-time member of Israeli special forces with years of training could not save his own life with his gun at his fingertips when the thief burst through his door with gun already drawn. I know lots of people out here in the country with guns in locked gun cabinets or in their bedside tables, but I do not know one who saved their own life or anyone else's life. I do know a few who died and had their guns stolen. It just seems like a huge risk to have guns so freely out there for the use of the evil people when the "good" people are not saving any lives with their guns, just using them for hobbies or personal awards.
  11. OMG, just exactly what we have to work with!!
  12. So you're weighing your ability to own guns -- which did NOT save your neighbors -- against Newtown's danger from a household with guns and a mentally challenged individual?! Why should a household with a mentally challenged individual be allowed to have multiple weapons, semi-automatic weapons, and lots of ammunition? How will that ever contribute to our country's militia? In her entire lifetime, was Mrs. Lanza or her son ever called up legally to defend their state or country?
  13. And, I love all the people here, especially KC and Eric who provide a home for us all. I tell my clients that I am not alone, that I have my virtual watercooler of helpful and caring tax preparers. Just like at the watercooler, we're going to discuss business but also take a break and discuss NT. But, we're never going to tell someone to go away or even be rude -- because everyone's listening! (Mom & Pop might have to discipline one of us, though.)
  14. I think the NT helps me avoid what I don't have time for that day. I wish the Software forum handled all the software complaints and questions; but that's because I'm here to learn about taxes and dealing with clients and the IRS and not to learn about ATX, because I stopped using ATX shortly after this board was born. I do think we need a new name so others understand this is a tax preparation forum and not one dedicated to using a specific software. I think a new name would help us gain new minds that are searching and answering questions re our profession and not new minds that just want a place to rant about ATX.
  15. Converting users to Ultra Tax.
  16. Hug Fiona from all of us.
  17. I guess one silver lining to tax prep is that we're too busy to be at the race. My prayers are with everyone in Boston.
  18. E-filed federal extensions yesterday, mine included, and more than ever. E-filing states today. Also, had some extensions to mail that I readied yesterday for hubby to mail today. Well, yesterday extended until 5:30 a.m. this morning, but I consider "yesterday" before I went to bed and "today" after. Today will have fewer hours than yesterday!
  19. NY (I have lots of commuters) has itemized deductions but a much higher standard than federal. My software makes the NY adjustments to compute the NY itemized to compare with the NY standard and takes the best NY outcome for each client, no matter which method was used for Federal. I haven't done a Delaware return. Have a couple of NCs, though.
  20. Was it a rental? 4797. Or personal but not residence? 8949/D with no loss allowed. Investment? 8949/D. How many years? Did she live in it at least two out of the last five years prior to the sale, or whatever the time frame is?
  21. My clients are getting nervous about me hanging around outside with them, probably thinking I'm trying to get in their car, but just reluctant to go back inside! A dog would be a good excuse....
  22. I've had a Fujitsu ScanSnap for a few years and love it. Upgraded to a Fujitsu in the 6000 models (don't see it on the scanner, maybe 6230Z) to be able to do Flow as well as Scan, needed some advanced features. Apparently, Fujitsu scanners are the workhorses of the industry. I don't have the one that's rated for thousands of pages, nor the flatbed; mine was the cheapest of those designed for office use. I do have an all-in-one with a flatbed if I have to scan a book or something like that. Check with the software company you expect to use for scanning into a return or scanning into a document manager or whatever your use will be to see if they have recommendations. Also, look into what bundle you get, such as the full Adobe or an included document manager, when you're comparing scanners and specs and prices. Fujitsu is full price if you buy through their company store, so compare prices online, such as TigerDirect, and pay attention to delivery costs which varied wildly when I was shopping.
  23. Yeah, another dependent graduated, lived in CT, worked in MA while in college, then moved to NYC for his new job before 2012 ended. So, three states. one NR and two PY, plus NYC PY (just schedules on NYS return, though). I thought I'd get through all my extensions before I went to bed last night/this morning. But, still have lots to do plus the states that I have to file on the state web sites, like CT. Pleasantly surprised that MA accepted e-filing extensions through my software for both individuals and trusts. Thank goodness NY accepts extensions through my software for my commuters and PYs. Still CT is a pain and seems to crash often. And, I'm starting to worry that trusts/estates actually require paper and SIGNATURES for some states, maybe CT, remembering something from last year. I still have one return (foreclosure) that I promised to complete; they have a baby due in May and need their refund. And, one I want to do to stop a complaining client. I'm sure I'm going to miss some extensions. Just have to sort later this week and make sure I get to those first to minimize any P&I damage. Hated this year with Congress delaying the start of tax season -- and I don't use ATX -- and the IRS computers crashing or whatever three times this week while I spend way too much time checking for acceptances. Rant over. Just meant to say Thank You and brain wouldn't stay focused. Thank you for the OH extension info. Not looking forward to all those local returns I hear about, though!
  24. Sale of her principal residence F8949/D.
  25. OK, so the daughter of an old client moved back to CT in 2012 from Ohio. Frantically e-filing extensions. She worked in OH, MA, and CT, dropped off most 2012 documents but hasn't unboxed her old returns. Does OH have their own extension form or accept the federal? Do I need local extensions also? This'll be my first OH return, so I know I'll be back here. But, please just help me get her on extension for now! Thanx.
