Stock Price

I have a client who sold GE stock that she received as an inheritance on 8/15/1979. Going to Big Charts Historical Prices I get the price that day. Where do I find the history of the stock as to splits? She did not reinvest dividends.

PS

On 8/15/1979 it says the split adjusted price is 1.143229 and the adjustment factor is 48:1. Does that give me a clue?

I checked GE's website & it's very frustrating. I get the same historical price you have of 1.143229. It does show 10 yrs historical of dividends also reporting 2 splits:

2 for 1 for cert. dtd 5/9/97 and

3 for 1 for cert. dtd 5/5/00

I couldn't find any other sites that would give you history of other splits, but there are probably others.

You might try contacting GE's investor relations directly. GE's website is www.ge.com

Google GE and the first hit is the stock price chart from Google Financial. That one shows five splits since 1979 -- all in May.

1983 2:1

1987 2:1

1994 2:1

1997 2:1

2000 3:1

So your 48:1 clue is right on! Her basis is $54.87 against a current price of $37.45.

the closing price on 8/15/79 was 54.88. isn't the current basis per share $1.1433? (54.88/48 = $1.1433). or the $1.143229 that was originally stated (subject to other rounding).

You are correct of course. [Reminder to self - think before idly combining numbers to reach a conclusion. ]

It's interesting to note that Yahoo historical quotes gives the "adjusted close" (adjusting for both splits and dividends) as $0.50 while BigCharts gives the "split adjusted price" as $1.1432. So it would seem that Yahoo is more useful when calculating return on investment (including dividends) while BigCharts is more useful when preparing a Schedule D.

I think that would depend whether the dividends were reinvested or received in cash?
