Okay . . . this is the first year I've efiled in any meaningful way. What does 'IRS Cleared' mean in the 'Status' section? This is on State returns. It doesn't happen on all State returns; some come back 'accepted'. Do I need to somehow resubmit the ones that say 'IRS Cleared'?

Thanks so much!

I get IRS cleared on my piggy-back state returns. Since its piggy-back, it means the state will now process it. The ones that come back accepted just means that you didn't download the ack. while it was in the previous status so it went right to accepted. I would assume the status would change to accepted within a week if you download acks. Do you have any that haven't changed to accepted?

Thanks, Julie. Yes, mine haven't changed yet, which is why I am wondering if I need to resubmit. It hasn't been a week yet, which is the timeframe you suggest. Kansas isn't issuing refunds, anyway, so I'll wait a few more days.

Thanks for your help!

Kansas is issuing refunds again. All of mine that never change from IRS cleared have been processed and the clients have received the refunds. I do not think I would resubmit any returns.

Thanks, Bart! When did they start issuing refunds again? I can't believe I've been so out of it that I missed it!

They started a couple of weeks ago. The refunds were held up because the senate would not authorize borrowing until the govenor signed something. She finally signed.

You will find the answer in Document 974. "IRS Cleared--this status indicates that a piggyback or state-only return has been transmitted to the IRS, has passed the IRS/Federal validation process, and will be forwarded by the IRS to the appropriate state for processing. The state will send an acknowledgment to ATX when they have processed the return." (Look in the ATX Knowledge Base)

All of my State Piggybacks before they were accepted had IRS Cleared. After I waited for a few days and did the daily updates, I clicked on receive acks and the IRS cleared changed to accepted.

There are other definitions also in the above document.

Last year I had a big problem with an NY return that stayed in IRS cleared for months. finally, near Oct 15, I got on the phone with ATX trying to find out what was up and I find out it had been rejected months before. Sucked; I had synched, and the status never changed.

I know this is old, but I just wanted to clarify on the IRS Cleared status. Basically it means that the IRS sent it to the state agency - most of the time these returns are accepted if you look up their status in Return Status (or call us to do it - CCare uses the same tool). On most of these returns this WILL be the final status. I don't know why this is.
