  1. I would wait for the Court Appointment Documents. The Estate represented by the Co-Administrators will be your clients.

  2. I understand you are trying to be helpful, but what info would you have that would be needed in the next 30 days? If they are looking for what bank or investment accounts she had, that could certainly have changed in the last 7 years. In that case how would you know what documents to have them look for?

  3. There are tax people online showing how to use prompts to create elaborate situations, maybe a response to a tax question that then formats itself for something else, such as searching your client base, and then emailing per a specific rubric. Formulae. Complex. So, I can definitely see this saving scammers time! I did go to the ChatGBT and asked it to write a letter saying I'm increasing tax preparation prices 10%. In seconds it gave me an amazing letter. I asked it to refine it to say 10% over 2021 returns for same items; and it explained there'd be additional fees for new issues due to clients' changing situations or new tax laws. Then I had it be more non-negotiable, which it did. The only thing I added myself was for clients leaving to remember to give their new preparer their prior year tax returns. I then asked it for a short, sweet letter to fire clients. (I was having trouble keeping it short.) The two-sentence statement it created is exactly what I wanted. I don't think I'd pay for it, but while it's free I might use it again.

  4. Because they make good lighting stands for a standing desk. Of course a good book on Capone is an appropriate topper. Looking forward to a good tax season for everyone.

  6. I believe you are correct. If he was employed the SS tax would be accessed and credited to his SS account. He "paid" it by reducing his refund. A bigger question may be how is he providing for himself and child (or children) on $12,000 a year (that's about 4 bags of groceries these days ) . I would definitely ask some pointed questions and document the answers for due diligence.

  7. Ask for ChatGBT's cites. You probably want to find out where that error sits, so you can attempt to refute it. Not nice being associated with FTX.

  8. Your previous post was misleading because your client paid SE Tax which was offset by EIC. Therefore timely filing is still required to update his SS Earnings Record.

  9. Even at 12,000.00 there had to be some SS deducted, paid somewhere. if he was self-employed, It seems like the EITC and CTC would have eliminated any SE tax. With that said, the SE tax generated is the SS portion still credited to his SS account? Never thought about this before.

  10. How can he have received Earned Income Tax credit and not paid any social tax? Earned income required for EITC, and SS tax is always paid if there is earned income. Does he file MFJ?

  11. Thanks. I didn't know that. Actually he prepared his own return by hand and paper filed it. After reviewing things, I'm not going to amend the return at all. I agree with the client and I'll just compose a letter for him to respond to the IRS letter.

  12. They also claim they've caught up on the tax return backlog, yet my clients are still receiving the "we need an additional 60 days" letter every two months regarding their 2020 returns. I got through to the irs in about 10 minutes three times one day last week. Every time they put me on hold to get the faxed POA, I was disconnected when they picked up the line again (which for some reason it took 10 minutes to pick up the POA off the fax machine). The third agent told me they were having a problem with the phone system where it would disconnect everyone they put on hold. So yes, they're picking up the phone quicker, but I'd take their report with a grain of salt. Then there's also the fact that they're spending all this money just to get back to the shitty service level of 2020 and not making any actual improvements.

  13. Have any of you been following the news about CHATGPT? "Researchers have learned that people can use the new ChatGPT AI to automatically generate new forms of malware, including polymorphic software that is capable of changing its own code on the fly to meet novel challenges." The article goes on to say that the created malware is totally capable of evading any detection available! As George H W Bush was fond of saying, "Now we are in really deep doo doo!"
