  1. Let's say he says "yes, I filed I-765 when I sent my adjustment of status". Then what? You still don't have a Social Security card, you still need to apply for an ITIN. There are many questions you can ask such as "Did you submit your fingerprints yet or are you still waiting for them to send you that letter?", let say the answer is "yes, I did my fingerprints 6 months ago". Then what? you still don't have a social security card and you still need to apply for an ITIN. Normally, I collect all the info needed to do the job I was hired to do and I let the immigration lawyer deal with the rest.
  2. MAS is right. If the foreigner was here for 183 days in 2013, apply for an ITIN and include all income for both of them. Paper file, send form W-7 with his passport and send the whole enchilada to Texas. If the foreigner was not here in 2013 for 183 days, then do the same thing as above and include a letter stating that the non-resident person wants to be treated as a resident for tax purposes. You don't know if you will get a green card until you have it in your hands. In the meantime, they want to file their taxes and that's the only route right now.
  3. It makes perfect sense. I always deal with 1099s issued to my clients even if they wrong. I guess this 1099 was left out when taxes were prepared. $50K in rewards! That means this person has a million dollars in Citi bank and he didn't want to pay about $300 in taxes, even though a 1099 was issued.
  4. You should scan the disk and see if you get any errors.
  5. Mamalody, You could have hard drive issues and you should solve it before you install ATX2014.
  6. Compacting and repairing databases Answer ID 3260 | Document ID 35836 | Published 01/10/2012 10:15 PM | Updated 07/15/2014 08:05 AM Some solutions in this Knowledgebase may call for you to compact and repair your database files in Microsoft Excel. To compact and repair a database Start Microsoft Access. Open the database you want to compact and repair. On the Tools menu, selectDatabase Utilities. On the sub-menu that becomes available, select Compact and Repair Database. I found this at ATX but please be careful with this one, go to the site and double check if this applies to ATX
  7. Program runs slowly after updates Answer ID 3588 | Document ID 624 | Published 01/13/2012 02:28 PM | Updated 01/27/2014 11:52 AM After installing an update for your ATX software, the program takes a long time to start or to respond when entering data. This problem can occur when your hard disk drive is heavily fragmented, or has an excessive number of unnecessary files. To clean and defragment your hard disk drive Close all open applications. Run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to remove temporary files. Refer to Answer ID: 1777 for instructions. Run the Windows ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter utilities. Refer to Answer ID: 1777 for instructions. For 1.2 gigabyte (GB) or larger hard disk drives, the Disk Defragmenter utility may take a long time. Many users prefer to run this utility overnight or at the end of a work day. If the utility reports that your drive is heavily fragmented, defragmenting can improve your overall system performance. If the Return Manager contains many returns, or if you delete a large number of returns, the database file of your ATX software may become excessively large. You can "clean up" the database by using the REPAIR.EXE program utility. Refer to Answer ID: 1297 for instructions.
  8. I have noticed that a book smart person is good in most areas if you teach them. Teaching a book smart person is a very good investment that will pay off if you can retain that person in your company. In this case, I would not fire this person but I would assign him other tasks and later on he would become the best on the field. Do you agree that a "not so smart" person will be successful in Marketing and sales only? Why is that? You know who I am referring to, correct? Have you deal with co workers that are not so smart? Are you one of them and you have not chosen sales or marketing?
  9. Try to defragment your hard drive at least. For Windows 7, click start, computer, Right click "System C:", properties, tools, Defragment now.
  10. The longest and Elian is only 29? They should say, "the longest we have discovered". There are many places doing fraudulent returns for years and they are never caught. They didn't mention the postal worker who was also in the game.
  11. Ask them to make big efforts to collect from son. Taking him to court will be a good start.
  12. Correct
  13. I don't have an answer but if that person didn't need his 401K for 7 years, she won't mind half of it going to taxes... after all he doesn't need it.
  14. Unless Utah has a 9 year SOL, he will have issues since they are talking about 2005.
  15. You don't have to live in NY to be taxed by NY, correct?
  16. Gift to son and now parent has to consider documenting or paying taxes on the excess gift (depending on parent's situation).
  17. File 1040X and 982
  18. Actually, I interview them by asking their names, what school they go to, what grade and I write down the answer they give me litteraly. Sometimes the older one answers for the little one and I also make a note of it.
  19. There are two trends, the one implied and the other is the fact that they bring a lot of kids to the office. As you know, no matter how careful kids are, their abilities to hold drinks are limited and they always have issues with the carpet, chairs or any other surface.
  20. I saw in the news yesterday that a bank in Canada found out what each individual liked and the ATM was dispensing those items. So, for the short run WOW, you can give a trip to Vegas and for the long run, find out what your favorites clients like and maybe you can surprise them the following year. When you do 40% of EIC, it is not a good idea to have candies, coffee or sodas for your clients. I only have water.
  21. "Too much to read", that's correct. After listening stories about the fact that they about to loose their home and blablabla for 30 minutes for four clients, who will have the energy to read!!! My partner talks a lot more to my clients and there must be an equilibrium like in any other ratios. The talking ratio should be reduced because I loose clients because of my partner's listening and asking too much questions. I lost one client who came one day and started talking to my partner about how happy she was with her house and how happy she was about the sale person and she wanted to refer more people to him. For a couple of years they talked a lot about that house. On the third year the client didn't come and later we found out that she lost her house and was pissed with the sales person. Another lady came and I did her's and her daughter's taxes. Again my partner start talking about her country, her food, her tradition etc. The folloing year she came with an engagement ring and showed it to her and my partner show it to my and they started talking about the fact that she was going to be married to this young guy from South America and that he was a Student getting his doctorate. The following year she came and said that a month earlier, on Feb 14th to be exact, she got married. I explained to her that next year she needed to file jointly. I prepared his taxes and the guy said that he was returning to his country and that if I ever wanted to come and visit, I was welcomed. I said, I do want to take my friend their, she will like to visit, He replied in Spanish and said "Why do you want to bring sand to the beach?". We laugh softly because my partner and his wife was engage for a while on a conversation. The next year, the lady didn't show up for her taxes. Later we found out that they had split and she was depressed. The talking ratio should be reduced to 5 minutes per hour of work. I forgot how to do ratios but that is 5/12 ratio.
  22. I guess in an effort to have happy customers we forget that we are running a business. Businesses make money, otherwise you could run VITA, non-profit site and get some money from the IRS because you are running a non-profit tax preparation business. Does any one of us make as close as the president of HRB who doesn't even deal with PITA clients? Why is that? Because they admit they are in business and have marketing strategies. They have ratios, strategies how to get clients to the door, they have strategies on how to pay rent from 3 months of income. Some of us have difficulties paying our rent and we work like dogs most of the year. When I was taking math in college, I had some formulas that apply to a lot of business, but with time I have forgotten them. Now I run my business with the only direction to get 40 more clients each year by being a good counselor and by ignoring that I am in business and that I should not be wasting my time listening to my client's stories while I have other clients whose paper work is on hold because I am a good listener. My production ratio becomes very low, but hey, I don't have a ratio.
  23. OK, your info might give the ratio Philip is looking for. Would you say that your people spend less that one hour per return on average, while more difficult ones would take a couple of hours, correct? You will not give 10 huge corporation returns to a person in one month because that person might make only make about $12 per hour while someone preparing easy returns will make at least $21.50 per hour, correct? How do you compensate for the PITA factor in clients? Some easy returns can take you a couple of hours just because the client is PITA and keeps bringing, how about my CVS co pay or I bought a brand new car last year, will that help me with my W-2 job?
  24. I like the last sentence on the email that reads "If you were stupid enough already and provided us with you bank information, please disregard this email because you will overwork our server and we might lose any other potential stupid trying to be robbed".
  25. Don't post the links. What they want if people to request a refund to be directly "deposited" to their bank account. In reality, all they need is their bank info.
