  1. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS! I was on the couch with my laptop, I put it on the end table and when I got up my foot tripped on the cord and my laptop went crashing to the floor. So, I got out my portable hard drive that I back everything up on and plugged it into my husbands laptop and somehow the cord got hooked on the office chair, so when I slid across the room my portable crashed to the floor. Both drives are now dead. Then I get a call from a lady that needs 5 years of returns done. I do inline backups but only files back up not programs. But believe it or not I was able to launch TY2010 from the setup on the backup. I installed the 2011 program and it updated. Had to use the onedesk web based, because I do not have the CD's. Hate the web based, it seems to only use interview mode. I will be calling Monday to get the CD's
  2. I just can't stop ripping myself off. I should have said since you have been a good client I will only charge for you parents return.
  3. Ok, this is what I did. I told the client there was no charge for their return as I only had to add their parents information, but for the parents I had to a actual return to get the new numbers. $125
  4. My policy is I file your return and give you a copy AFTER you pay me
  5. The IRS may not need it, I don't know. If they don't then why have a pop up menu to enter items individually, why not just let me put the amount on the line. And if your going to have me enter them individually I'd like to look at the return and see what that amount is made of.
  6. I agree, my problem is I'm always saying to myself something like, well their young and struggling, well he served in the military, he makes such little money. But I need to stop doing that, I am so under pricing some of my returns it's ridicules.
  7. So a while back some of us were talking about changes we would like onedesk to make. One big issue for me was on Schedule C line 29 "Other Cost" where there is a pop-up window to enter items individually just like the "Other Expense" section. Difference was other cost did not have a statement listing each item, so looking at the return you would not know what the number was made up. I mentioned this last year and in the post. Well it looks like onedesk was listing/reading the post. I just went to a sch. c return I have with other cost and there is now a federal statement that list the cost. THANK YOU!!! You may want to check some of the things you suggested to see if they made the changes. I noticed there have been several updates sense 047/15
  8. Yes great article. thanks everyone for all the input.
  9. The sister was doing the parents return. The parents sold their home early in 2012, and had a $200,000 non taxable gain , my client thought that excluded her from being able to claim them.
  10. A $100 each return was what I was thinking. I forgot to mention they also pay big medical expenses for their parents so they are due Thousands. I have a few single people with one w-2 and nothing else at all, I have been charging them $50 for about the last 4 years. I looked through my records and see there a lot of people that I have been charging the same price for 3 years, next year prices are going up
  11. I agree this would be better way to do it.
  12. OK, I always have a hard time with pricing. I try to set a minimum $ for a return schedules like C.... But I always find myself not charging that amount once I see it didn't take much time and I calculate what it comes to an hour. What do you do? Also I just did a amended for someone, actually two because they didn't realize they could claim their parents whom they support and whom live with them on top of it. The parents only needed to file to get a refund so I amended theirs, took minutes just changing the exemptions then amended the daughters just adding the parents again just minutes. But I know other preparers charge a lot for amended returns. What/how do you charge for this type of return? Thanks
  13. Do you really think they are competent enough, 1. to realize they should upgrade to the latest. 2. their employees will be able to transition from XP to Win8
  14. I'm nagging some clients all the time about their records.
  15. At least their not jumping to win8. It's is AWFUL! and I doubt anyone at the IRS could figure it out
  16. "There used be a rationale along the lines that returns filed in Sept - Oct miss the cutoff for audit selection based on the current year and get thrown into the mix for the following year. Not omitted, but simply batched with the succeeding year." I think that is the rational, but he doesn't have that kind of understanding of the process, so he must have heard it some place
  17. So my Sch.C guy told me one of the reasons he files at the last minute is he believes it lowers his chances of an Audit. What do you think?
