Does this fix work: "An error was encountered while communicating with the..." when opening the ATX 2013 program or a return Answer ID 14681 | Document ID | Published 01/08/2014 09:09 AM | Updated 02/17/2014 05:25 AM You receive the following error message when opening ATX 2013 and/or opening a return: An error was encountered while communicating with the ATX Server. Would you like to retry? Below are a few items that may resolve this issue so that you stop receiving this error message: Update ATX to the latest program version. If you are unable to get into the program, you can update the software via the ATX Solution Center. For instructions on how to update through the Solution Center, see Answer ID: 1795. If you have both the ATX Software and the Fixed Asset Manager software, update both to the latest versions. Verify you meet the minimum system requirements (this includes workstations as well if you are on a network). See Answer ID: 14483to download the System Analysis Tool so that you can verify whether you meet the minimum system requirements. You must meet minimum system requirements to ensure proper software performance and preventing the server connectivity message. If the above items do not resolve the error, continue with the instructions below. You could also receive the error message if the Files/Backup paths are configured in a way that creates additional strain on the server even if you have updated to the latest program version and you meet the minimum system requirements. In order to avoid receiving this error message, users should make sure that they are not setting a Backup/Restore storage location inside a folder that is also being used for the File Storage location. Also, users should NOT set the File Storage Location to a folder that contains other files and folders. This folder should only be used by the ATX 2013 application to store data files. Do not store any other files types in this folder such as prior year software installations, Word or Excel documents, or PDFs. If the Backup/Restore location is using the same location as the File Storage location or other file types, below are instructions on how to resolve. If you are not comfortable completing the following steps, seek an IT professional. Please read all steps before doing this procedure. Open the system Admin Console and find the file storage location. See Answer ID: 14834for instructions on how to access the Admin Console. Go to that location using windows explorer. Inside that folder select everything EXCEPT these folders if they exist. Some of these folders may not exist if they have not been created yet. Assets BankProductData EfileData FAMData FormsetAttachments FormsetData RolloverLogs Template Move all of the selected files and folders to another location, leaving the specified folders mentioned in step 3. Create a new folder in the current file storage location. Ex. ATX2013Files This new folder will be your new file storage location. Go into the admin console and change the file storage location to the new folder you just created. a. This will copy your files in your current file storage location to your newly created folder. Now you are free to move the folder and files you moved in Step 3 back into the original file storage location. If the instructions listed above do not correct the error message, call Customer Support at 800-638-8291 and refer to Knowledge Base article 14681.

So much for staying connected to server
  11. That would be nice but it was a loan to the business after it had been in operation for a few years.
  12. Long term client loaned close to 6 figures to brothers business now wants to write entire amount off since brother is unable to repay. Told him no can do as it is a capital loss in nature. I told him he owed 7000 and he went to the block online and got it to come out about 15000 better and that was before enter wife's w2 of 45000 with 5000 withholding and other w2 for 15000 and no withholdings. Keep in mind he made 180000 so the additional income is being taxed at 28%.
  13. On phone with support. They have no clue which way is up. I feel bad they put those people in a position where they can't answer callers questions.
  14. The deferral portion is subject to medicare/ss tax. 480000 fed and state(for most of them) taxable 60000 gross subject to payroll taxes. The match is a straight write off and not subject to any payroll taxes. The match on a 401k can go as high as 25%. I have some people make 40000 deferring 23000 and matching 10000 for a total contribution of 33000.
  15. Okay. 1. I never changed backup location. 2. I was told to do a system wide backup to preserve files 3. System was never auto backing up/saving or backing up upon closing a return that is why I was told to do a manual system backup. 4. Only files that have ever been "backed up" are when atx got on phone selected all files and did a backup. The problem is the POS software will not backup after closing returns or anything else unless I go under returns and select all returns and do it manually.
  16. Id rather not call them again. Last time I was on phone they could not recover file and said I was up shits creek.
  17. System is not backing up at all. I did a manual backup a few weeks ago at 113 return and since then we are up to 193 and not the first one is in the backup/restore location.
  18. It is called get their heads out of their asses admit they do not know what they are doing and start over. I can't believe we allow a company that designs a product that provides for our lively hood to get away with workaround after workaround. We are one of the 10% that did not move anything around and get the server error 3-5 times per return.
  19. What is a MACRO and how does it work?
  20. We did not put enough time and effort into switching or evaluating another company. We purchased Drake but did not allow enough time for the learning curve since its setup is different from ATX which you know since you went to a Drake seminar, We had hopes they would fix the program in yr 2 as everything has some kinks that need to be worked out but it still feels like you have to know the program as well as the developers to make it function at times. For example there is no reason we should have redone 4 returns this season because the data was corrupt to the point ATX could no recover the file and the backup was either corrupt as well or the software just did not backup.
  21. Jack I like you I really do and I think you are a very knowledgeable individual but I am perplexed to this day why you defend ATX as if it were you child. I get things need to be done a certain way or it wont work properly but that is the thing. You should not have to do things a certain way and the people at CCHSFS do not care to address this or any other problem they just want to do patches along the way. Sure it is a $$$ issue just as switching to an open source database like Raven was but at some point you got to spend a dime or two to make things work properly without expecting your customers to know the software backwards and forwards.
