  1. What is a Google voice number? I suppose you have to pay for it. I have a Google email address in addition to my regular email address. Does the voice (texts) come thru on your regualr Google account? Or do you have to set up a different account?
  2. I kept hearing about a superseded return but I didn't know if you still used 1040X. From the other comments, I guess you just file the 1040X.
  3. Do we have to wait until after April 18 to file an amended return for 2022? Is that an IRS stipulation?

I've not had any problems with this either.

    Premium Tax Credit

I have a client who sold a rental house at a big gain. Whoops. Had to pay back all $12k of the PTC (plus tax on the gain). He's only a year away from Medicare. But he didn't have a mortgage so he's got all the money from the sale on hand.
  6. I was able to get the ATX program to add the additional std deduction. But IRS rejected it. I tried looking at ATX, checking and unchecking boxes. I recommended to client to efile 2022 without the additional std decuction. It was accepted by IRS. This is my first year for this client. He self prepared 2021 and paper filed it and following instructions included the higher std deduction amount. He received a letter from IRS. I composed a response letter. He has not heard back from IRS. I told him we will wait until he receives a response from IRS regarding 2021. Interesting comments from all. If anyone does this, let us know if IRS accepts or rejects even if the software allows for it.
  7. I was looking at that. But thinking 'taxable' ss. Thanks.
  8. Thanks. I was looking at irs.gov and sheesh.
  9. I thought 2021 was the first year we could efile an amended return. But ATX is letting me create an efile to amend a 2020 return. Just checking with others.
  10. I found a Form 5129 Questionnaire regarding the spouse. I added that to the return. It would not be included in the efiling. So I attached it as a pdf. Still didn't work. Same IRS rejection code. I didn't think it would work but gave it a try. If I don't get a solution for the efiling to go thru, I guess I'll have the client efile with only himself claiming the additional $1400 std ded. Then maybe paper file an amended return. We're only talking about $300. But it's still annoying.
  11. According to 1040 instructions and Parker general analysis, this appears appropriate. I couldn't find a reference in Parker to Code or Regs. Name and SSN of spouse is included. I checked the box for both being over 65 and ATX calculates the std ded at $15,750. But the IRS rejection says Total does not equal number of boxes checked. I have two boxes checked but where would I verify what 'Total' is. Two should equal two. I'm not sure if I'm missing something to check in ATX or IRS computers just won't accept this.
  12. Client is married, living apart. Spouse only has SS and does not file. Both are over 65. It seems he can file MFS and take the standard deduction plus $1400 for himself and another $1400 for spouse. ATX has let me enter the info and calculates the additional std ded. But I'm getting a rejection from IRS. The error code is F1040-395-01 It just says the Total Boxes checked must equal the count of the checkboxes. The two boxes on the return are checked. Am I missing something to check in ATX? Anyone else run into this?
  13. Thanks for the update. I'll have to update my own memory. Ha. I'm not familiar with Raven, but apparently it is slow too.
  14. What year does the loss occur? Year of the disaster itself or maybe the following year when damage is repaired and costs more than insurance reimbursements? If client doesn't know yet, how can I determine the loss in 2022. Can he claim it in 2023?
  15. I'm not a programming guru. But I've heard ATX uses a spreadsheet type of program. I think this is generally slower. I think it just gets hung up in itself and doesn't know which step to go to next, then gives you the warning to close. I thought about switching a few years ago but just don't want to go thru the learning process. I only have a few years left so I'll just stick with ATX and put up with it.
  16. Thanks for the comments.
  17. Just to reassure myself, there is no limit on income to contribute $6000 to a nondeductible IRA? Client wants to contribute, then convert to Roth. Something about investor strategy called a backdoor Roth. Ha.
  18. Yes, the taxed income (minus exclusion) is taxed at the higher rates as if the total income were taxed.
  19. I am on that group but I haven't been paying much attention to it. I should start to look at the postings more. Thanks.
  20. Thanks for comments. I was unaware that the excess scholarship income would count as earned income for purposes of calculating the SD. As a matter of my normal routine, when there is a long wait between completing the return and client coming in to sign the 8879, when ATX forces me to recreate the efile, I always compare the return in the program with my pdf copy I had made previously. When I saw a difference, I starting looking. Yes, Terry, the program must have recalculated when I opened the return.
  21. I prepared a return for a dependent. Excess scholarship as income on line 8 from Sch 1. ATX calculated the standard deduction with W2 income plus $400. Parents came in and dependent came in over a week later to sign 8879. ATX made me recreate the efile and when I did, ATX used the excess scholarship income (as earned income) and increased the standard deduction up to the full amount. I guess ATX had a recent update. Anyone else see this. Just a heads up.
  22. I see that the printed statement prints out under the Blank Statements tab. But there is still no statement for the K-3.
  23. I see that box to check. But where is the statement? I can't find where to print the statement. And what about K-3?
