If you look at the very first page, before you go to General Chat, Efile, or whichever forum, and drop down to the very bottom of the page, you will see the last item is the day's birthdays. Wendy Booth's birthday is today, for example.

The insurance company makes a contract with the insured to provide x amount of coverage of certain specific events. Just because something is medically necessary may not mean that a specific policy covers it. Therefor, the coverage has nothing to do with the deduction.

I'm having trouble imagining a situation where NONE of these apply, yet they still have to repay? Could you give a bit more detail?

OK, try this. Go to the General Chat forum, and at the top, click on the button that says "Watch Forum" Then select the level of notification you want, [i'd suggest Delayed Notification, but that's your call.] and then you should get them all. Or, you can chose to Watch just specific threads, again, by selecting the Watch button at the top of the thread. You can do the same thing for the efile forum, etc.

Yes, I have forms rates set, and I use them as the 'starting place' for determining the amount I charge, but I may increase or decrease that amount depending on a number of things, such as the t/p's occupation, his PITA status, known issues he has that increase the chances of needing follow-up time from me, etc. So I want the rates there, just do not want any 'list' at the bottom of the invoice, with or without prices. Ultimately, my fee is my fee, take it or leave it.

Absolutely deductible. Who paid for it is only relevant to the amount he has to deduct.

According to the Support page, it was available 1/13. https://support.atxinc.com/efile/jurisdictionstatus.aspx

Sadly, it is not that simple. I ALWAYS use Flat fee billing, and never check 'by form', but unless I tell it to put the forms on the separate schedule, it still prints them.

Observations I live in my own little world but it's OK, everyone knows me here. I don't do drugs 'cause I find I get the same effect just by standing up really fast. Money can't buy happiness but it sure makes misery easier to live with. If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the "terminal"? I don't approve of political jokes. I've seen too many of them get elected. The most precious thing we have is life, yet it has absolutely no trade-in value. I am a nobody; nobody is perfect, and therefore I am perfect. No one ever says, "It's only a game!" when their team is winning. How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on.

Way to go! I know she makes you proud. I took 18 hours most every semester for the same reason, to get the most for the money, which was hard while raising 3 little kids. Hubby took 15. We both worked a work/study job, and he worked another job as well. But the semester I took 21 hours so that I could graduate early almost killed me!

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH !!!!

I would love to she her get what she deserves for forging his name and filing them a joint return without his knowledge, and taking all the refund, as well, but it seems to me I've seen too many cases where they get away without any real consequences. This particular women has done this before. She used to be married to another of my clients, and she did him the same way after they split, but he'd actually gotten the divorce before year end, so he came out of it pretty simply. She, however, still got no penalty except having to pay back some of her refund. Did not even lose one year of EIC, etc. This husband is still married to her because he can not save enough to pay a lawyer to file for divorce, since she gets the child support out of his check before he ever sees it. I wish I had the gall to tell him "that's what you get for procreating with someone like her [twice no less] before you are sure she is fit to be the mother of your children". But I don't. I'm sure he'd rather get mad at me than at himself.

Even if it is based on the lack of the rescinding time, that is still a business expense. Simple a part of doing business that this sort of thing sometimes happens. That does not make it personal.
-
Then you should be fine.
-
Generally, 'damages' related to his work product would be a business expense. And the legal fees to defend his business reputation, as well as to try to collect moneys owed to him would also be a business expense. You should look at the written court ruling, to determine if there are any amounts that could be considered fines or penalties. But most likely it's all deductible, if it is only related to his job performance, and not some personal misbehavior.

Now, Tom, I would never call you that. You are a super nice guy, I know. But frankly, that particular client really IS. I only took him on because of his Dad sending him to me. The more I know of him, the less I like him, actually. But he had a simple situation I thought, and a simple return. However, his wife, [they separated in Oct or 09] got a copy of his W-2. and filed a Joint return using HER address, and HIS income [she did not work at all in 09] and got the refund which included a LARGE amount of EIC. He, of course, filed HOH since the kids lived with him for 9 months, and he paid for the house all year, and paid child support once he moved out, and claimed the two kids that were his. He got no refund, and in fact, got a bill from the IRS, because of the amount SHE had already gotten. She gets child support, will not let him see the kids at all, and is PO'd at both her and the IRS. This year he filed already, MFS, claiming his two of her three kids, so hopefully he beat her too it this time. I still expect to have to fight with the IRS over this year, and am still fighting them over last year. So naturally my fee went up!
-
Yes, but so were taxes then!
-
It comes out of YOUR fee, so you need to increase your fee to cover it, or you get shafted.

He can not take the mileage back and forth to his home but once. BUT, he can take the mileage that he would have had had he stayed at the job location. So if, for example, his average weekly mileage on weeks he stays all seven days is 200 miles, then he can take that same 200 miles even in the weeks that he actually goes home for two days. Ditto for meals.
-
I agree, the word INTENT is not there, but the word EXPECTS is. Page 4, middle column. And if his intent is to not be away more than a year, then he expects to not be away for more than a year, so the job is temporary, based on that expectation, right?

I wanted to eliminate the entire listing, and I have unchecked the box, but the list is still printing. I finally figured out that if I check the box for "Always display list ....on 'Forms Statement" it will take it off the invoice, then I just have to make sure not to actually print the Forms Statement. There should be an option for Don't print list of forms at all, IMHO.

On the other hand, consider that the MoneyCard has a fee for using it, so I'm guessing that cashing a check will cost most of them less than they would lose to the card fees.

Glad we helped. And especially, glad that the client appreciates your value to him. Too many times, they want us to just 'fix everything', after the fact, when it was their errors or omissions that caused the problem in the first place, and we do not get to write the rules, just apply them. I guess it is human nature to want to shift the blame off our own shoulders, whenever we can, but it can get old when a client comes to us only AFTER he/she has done whatever they wanted to do, the way they wanted to do it, either without asking for advice or, even worse, asking and then taking only the part of our advice that they liked. Then wanting us to just make the problem go away. Sorry for the rant, just had to deal with a client who has numerous problems that, while not all his fault, mostly his soon-to-be ex-wife's fault, but not at all my fault, complained about the fee for this year, when I charged him nothing extra at all for all the time I spend dealing with IRS for him over the problems she caused last year, and only increased it this year because I know I'm going to have to deal with them again this year. And why does he not think he should have to pay for my time for this? BECAUSE I DID NOT CHARGE HIS ELDERLY PARENTS EXTRA FOR DEALING WITH A PROBLEM THAT WAS TOTALLY NOT THEIR FAULT, NOR MINE, [it was all Smith Barney's fault] BUT TOOK YEARS TO RESOLVE. So because I was generous to a very elderly couple on a limited retirement budget, I should give this A$$ a free ride too?

Tom, you of all people on this board should know I do not have a sexist bone in my body! I KNOW that women are the superior sex!!! ROTFLMAO

I did not use it as my tax program in those days, but I did get a copy to use for 1099s and W-2s, since my MUCH MORE expensive software did not include that, you had to buy another module that cost about $500 and the Saber program was peanuts compared to that. I do remember the ROAR, which was much better than that talking Parrot! It's fascinating tho, to go back to the 2000 program and look at how simple it was compared to today. The software has improved tremendously over the years. Sadly the tax code has not. But ATX is still a great bargain, IMO, given the incredible complexity added to the code in the last several years.
