  1. Sorry, Lynn, that is one I don't know. I'd guess that you could do a stop payment at the bank, but I don't know if I'd want to do that. But I would, for sure, talk to my bank about how to deal with it. Also, call the Practitioner's Hotline, and ask them?
  2. Ditto
  3. Julie, you can download the program without having the disk, this year.

  5. "torches and pitchforks " ? You used to watch the Glen Beck show on CNN, didn't you? I wonder if they let him take the pitchforks with him when they killed his show? If so, would that be considered a taxable perk? Since they were gifts to him from viewers, seems to me they should have let him take them, and they should not be taxable to him, either. Wonder if he'll have them on his new show that starts this month on Fox News?
  6. I love that cartoon.

  8. Electronic Return Originators (EROs) can submit most returns when the e-file system opens on January 16, 2009, but there are seven forms the IRS will initially be unable to process. We needed to make changes to more than 40 forms, including revisions for the entire Form 1040 series. The seven affected forms cover less than 25,000 tax e-filed returns. The vast majority of individual e-filed returns are not affected by this situation, and almost all individual taxpayers will be able to file electronically as normal. Form 3468, Investment Credit Form 5884-A, Credits for Affected Midwestern Disaster Area Employers Form 6478, Alcohol and Cellulosic Biofuel Fuels Credit Form 8820, Orphan Drug Credit Form 8900, Qualified Railroad Track Maintenance Credit Form 8909, Energy Efficient Appliance Credit Form 8912, Credit to Holders of Tax Credit Bonds As a result, these forms will be unavailable for PATS testing and for submitting through live e-file production until late February. However, you may continue to test your software without these forms and pass PATS testing. You may test the above forms at a later date when the changes to these forms have been implemented. EROs may prepare and hold tax returns containing one or more of these forms until the IRS can accept them. EROs must advise taxpayers that the returns will not be e-filed until the IRS can accept the seven forms mentioned above. The stockpiling rule does not apply in this situation. EROs who submit returns containing one or more of these forms prior to the date the IRS can accept them will receive an Error Reject Code (ERC) 0120. Note: For those entities filing returns using the modernized e-File platform or MeF (corporations, exempt organizations, partnerships, excise tax, and certain business extension forms) Form 3468 (Investment Credit), Form 6478 (Alcohol and Cellulosic Biofuel Credit), and From 8900 (Energy Efficient Appliance Credit) can only be filed with a .pdf file until February 2, 2009 when MeF will allow these forms to be filed with the return using XML.
  9. Old Is When... 'OLD' IS WHEN... Your sweetie says, 'Let's go upstairs and make love,' and you answer, 'Pick one; I can't do both!' 'OLD' IS WHEN... Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes and you're barefoot. 'OLD' IS WHEN... A sexy babe catches your fancy and your pacemaker opens the garage door, 'OLD' IS WHEN.. Going braless pulls all the wrinkles out of your face. 'OLD' IS WHEN... You don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along. 'OLD' IS WHEN... You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police. 'OLD' IS WHEN... 'Getting a little action' means you don't need to take any fiber today. 'OLD' IS WHEN... 'Getting lucky' means you find your car in the parking lot. 'OLD' IS WHEN... An 'all nighter' means not getting up to use the bathroom. AND FINALLY...... 'OLD' IS WHEN... You're not sure if these are jokes.
  10. Well, sure you can use the IOU for your estimated payment, by just having it applied forward instead of refunded.
  11. Praise The Lord... During the service, the pastor asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for prayers which had been answered. A lady stood up and came forward. She said, "I have a reason to thank the Lord. Two months ago, my husband, Jim, had a terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was excruciating and the doctors didn't know if they could help him." You could hear an audible gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that poor Jim experienced. She continued, "Jim was unable to hold me or the children and every move caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation. They were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Jim's scrotum and wrap wire around it to hold it in place." Again, the men in the Congregation squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on Jim. She continued, "Now, Jim is out of the hospital and the doctors say, with time, his scrotum should recover completely." All the men sighed with relief. The pastor rose and tentatively asked if any one else had anything to say. A man rose and walked slowly to the podium. He said, "I'm Jim and I would like to tell my wife, the word is "sternum."
  12. I Wonder... Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are going dead? Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they know there is not enough money? Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet? Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection? Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard? Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him? Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? Whose idea was it to put an 'S' in the word 'lisp'? If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white? Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try? How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? How come you never hear father-in-law jokes?
  13. You file the SSA forms electronically too. So only thing mailed is the one to the employee and the copy to the client. You may choose to send the client their copy as a pdf, or send it both paper and pdf, is you want to cover all bases.
  14. It is new this year, that's why you were not aware of it. And I expect that there may be a letter offered us soon, but due to the legal angles, they may choose not to offer us what some smarta.. lawyer could deem to be 'legal advice'. So I can't blame them if they don't. But the Rev Proc should give you all you need to write your own letter, which, together with the new Consent form, should cover you.
  15. Ditto.
  16. Yeah, but I bet you've wanted to do it at least twice each year you've been in the tax business!
  17. No, someone was confused at that class. The client does not have to sign anything to share things with you or with anyone he wants to share with. It is only YOU that are limited to not sharing HIS info without getting his permission IN WRITING. The ATX program has a form you can use for this, by the way. Main difference for most of us is just that if the client calls and says "Would you fax my bank a copy of my return?" you will have to tell him "Not unless you first sign and return to me this form."
  18. I can not answer that, Roger, because 1) I've never used TurboTax, and 2) I've never used the interview method. I did look at it once, and it seems to be designed to be used by 'data inputers' who do not know much about tax law, just want to 'follow the menu' and let the program make the decisions for them. Which does sound like what TT does, now that I think about it.
  19. ATX allows both interview method and forms method. I would never choose any program that did not allow forms method, I hate input sheets.
  20. It is correct that if it's not from an IRA, it goes to line 7. But if he only received $3K, I'd ask a few questions before going ahead.
  21. Well, I found that if I put in the $ amounts, and the code, but did not check the box for IRA, it did not show up, but once I checked the box, it did show up on Line 15b,
  22. :bday:
  23. The instructions say that "Paid preparers must sign paper returns with a manual signature."
  24. It's OK, Roger, we are not mad at you. We're just a bit of a rowdy bunch, now and then, some of whom like to pick out any weakness in an argument put forth, just for the practice. Others of us are more calm and patient, but we still allow all kinds, as long as they keep it reasonably polite and clean. We're a COMMUNITY, and as such, we actually encourage a moderate amount of personal chat mixed in with lots of serious tax talk. Most of the time, during tax season we don't have time for much except the tax talk, in the slower times we get into more personal stuff a bit. Just like a typical business office, I think. Don't get too defensive just because a few folks challenge you. While we may have doubts about the practical aspects of your idea, that does not mean we don't wish you well. Frankly, tax software is a LOT DIFFERENT than any other kind of open-source software I've ever come across. It's not at all like a word processor or even a spreadsheet program, which once you write it is done, except for 'refinements' you add from time to time. Tax law itself changes all the time, and the forms are changed by the IRS often, so the BASICS themselves, behind the program, change often. So I for one find it hard to imagine any program that is not supported by a large paying customer base could possibly work. But that does not mean I don't hope you can prove me wrong. Besides, how could anyone not smile at a chinchilla, they are so soft and cute! ;~)
  25. What I love about ATX is the forms-driven program, and the many great worksheets built into the forms. Plus the fact that it allows me to, within reason, modify forms. It's much like the old by-hand method, with all the bad parts taken away. I don't like programs that force me to use their menus, and go in their order. And of course, I like the fact that they keep the price reasonable.
