  1. Yes, but if their servers were down, they would not be able to SEND the emails, since they need the server to do that. It's like the client who called me yesterday wanting me to send him a form, but while I got the email on my Palm, I could not send him anything from the office, where the power was out due to the ice storm. Both home and office out at that time. Now, home is still out, but office is back up. So I'll be sleeping in the office tonight, where I will have heat.
  2. So what kind of a pet did she get? If it was a hamster, I'd deduct the darn thing without blinking. If it was a shelter dog that cost $36 for the fees, I'd deduct all of it, if it cost $150 for the adoption, at least half, but probably all. If it was a $600+ dog, I would not deduct it at all, since I'd have to assume that the reason for spending that much was not for the daycare kids.
  3. If you explain it to him that if he follows his 'friends' advice he will be filing a fraudulent return, and explain why clearly, he probably won't try it. And explain too, that even if he files that way, gets the extra refund, he will have to pay it back with penalty and interest. Many 'tax cheats' did not really intend to cheat, they just follow bad advice from their 'friends'. You can educate him, and help him avoid the trouble he could get himself into.
  4. Send this same exact message to the Suggestion Box.
  5. Just means their server is down, try again in a little while, they may have gotten taken out by the bad ice storms. Or just down for maintenance, which is usually just a short time down.
  6. Worst thing is, boyfriend will probably file first, because all he has is a W-2, so he will get them, then her parents will get rejected, and have to file a paper return to claim the dependents that they are in fact legally entitled to claim.
  7. It's easy to customize the master form, but first I would try deleting the master form "Client Letters" and then downloading it again. That might clear up the problem, as my mailing slip printed correctly. It is true, if you use the option of the return address 'on the left side' it will print it high. But if you change to the 'centered' it will print it the same as it was last year. In the past 'centered' was the default, I don't know why 'left' is now the default. But it's easy to change that in the Preferences.

    network

Well, I just figure, since tax software is extremely complex, plus having to be rewritten every year, it's amazing that we get such a great program, with the most forms included of any software, at a price on the very low side of the market. So if I have to accept a few inconveniences, that one is a very small price to pay. I just make it a point to update first thing in the morning, plus at lunch time, and again in the evening. Later in the season, I'll do it just once a day, but now I find it's best to get current often, as so many new or improved forms are coming almost hourly.
  9. You might also try using a driver for a model closer to yours, like the 4100.
  10. Does your client then own the bike, or does the rider own the bike? If your client owns the bike, and merely provides ti to the rider while he rides for the team, then it's not income to the rider. But if it is given to the rider, then I'd report it as income to the rider, at cost.
  11. :bday:
  12. I love it. Sooooooooo true. Well, except I never thought of the 'senior underwear' solution. After all, you can always 'go look for a file' and make a bathroom detour or a coffee or coke detour at that time. In fact, that is the easiest way to do it, because the client sitting there in front of your desk waiting for you to come back with his file is keeping the others at bay. ;~) I now buy the small cokes, just because I was having to throw away so much that did not get consumed. Now if I could only find a solution to the phone!!!!
  13. OK, then I'm going to edit your message title to make it clear that this is a QB question, and hopefully one of our QB experts will be able to help you.
  14. Yeah, that was really confusing to me. Guess it would help if, when asking about such forms, you named them NY-CT-3, etc? Both of them are now available, by the way.
  15. Your question is unclear. What are you doing, preparing a W-2 for an employee? And what is happening when you create the W-2?
  16. Did you file a joint return in 08? If so, you need to include it, but you could still then exclude it since you were insolvent at the time the debt was forgiven. That way you should not get any nasty letters later from the IRS. If you did not file a joint return in 08, then you can ignore it, since it is not your SSN that would be matched to it.
  17. From the User's Guide, page 156, which you can find by going to MyATX, KnowledgeBase, and it's linked in the list to the left. Backing Up vs. Exporting Returns Depending on your needs, you will use either the Backup or Export feature to archive your data. Be sure to review the characteristics of these two features so you can choose the appropriate tool for a specific backup task. The Export feature: • Saves the most recent copies of one or more returns. • Does not save bank product and e-filing information such as important notices and enrollment data. • Must be performed manually. • Should only be used to transfer returns (from your office computer to your home computer, for example). The Backup feature: • Saves multiple return versions. • Saves bank product and e-filing information such as important notices and enrollment data. • Can be run automatically at specified intervals. • Is intended to be used as part of your office’s overall data storage/backup plan. Be sure to store a copy of your backup files in an off-site location. If off-site storage is not feasible, we recommend making a regular practice of copying the program's automatic backups to a CD-R, tape-storage device, or other portable storage medium.

    FORM 5329

The form automatically pops up because you may have an exception to enter. If you do not have any exception, then you delete the form. A good thing, IMHO.
  19. And frankly, since in our business, our computers and our databases are our lives, double protection is not enough, you should always have a minimum of three different backup sources.

  21. Well, I checked on it after responding to your post, and the IRS does not show it as available yet. I have no idea why they are being slow with it, but clearly, the software can not provide it until the IRS lets them.
  22. Yardley, why not sign up for one of the free fax services like eFax, and then you can get it as a pdf directly to your email.? There are several options that allow low volume faxing free. Saves paper, too.
  23. Well, sure, you have to be legally married to file MFJ, but you don't have to file proof of that. And you are also wrong about having to be divorced to file HOH, an abandoned spouse with a child can file that way while still married. The spouse that walked still has to file MFS, unless he also has a child living with him, in which case he can file HOH too. So we get these nasty situations from time to time where two people are still legally married, but both are living with their kid, so file HOH, often also claiming the girlfriend or boyfriend and that persons kids as well. Fact is, tho, they do not have to provide proof to the preparer in order to file as single. Do you ask everyone who comes in to prove their marital status, before you will do their return? Why not? If a couple comes in do you ask to see their marriage license?

    Tax Credit

NO. This is something that Obama has proposed, without details, that MIGHT be passed for 09. Will not effect this year's returns, I'm sure, since they have never yet passed a tax bill credit that was retroactive to a past year.
  25. Should be Returns, if includes the fed and state.
