  1. Yes, and sadly, the IRS knows this goes on and does almost nothing to stop it, or punish it. And frankly, it's hard on us when we have to tell them 'no' and we all know that they will just go somewhere else and use what we told them to lie better to the next one they go to. But hey, all we can do is live up to our own standards, right?
  2. Tom, it's a smart thing to look at options, every year. I don't disagree there. But I will nit-pick at the second and third items. The bank products thing is not an ATX thing, it's a BANK thing. And from what I hear, it's affecting them all a bit. It comes down to them being scared to make some of the loans they used to make, I think. And the CA thing is a CA thing. You know that. CA is using every slow-down the outflow method it can think of, and making up new ones every day.
  3. Yes, when there is a significant difference, I want to know why, BEFORE I tell the client the bottom line. Because it may well be that my lousy typing is the reason, or perhaps something significant changed. But either way, we look smarter and more professional when we already know the answer. Trying to figure it out after we've already told them does not look good, IMHO.
  4. And this board has not existed for ten years, yet, either.
  5. It's working well for me, and the only times I have called tech support they have been good. Hold time is improved, also. Of course, by this time each year it always is.

  7. Was the federal return accepted? If so, just recreate the state return as a stand alone, and resend it.
  8. Gee, I have not gotten any lately. Wonder why they are not sending them to me?

    Form 8606

It's now showing 2/9 as the date.
  10. The attachment worked just fine for me, Margaret.

    FORM 2106

No, Gene, don't override it, go to the top of the page and check the box for DOT percentage.
  12. I think I would prefer Duane's Purina Diet to that meal.
  13. Good for you. I personally feel a little bit insulted when someone tries to make me think that their prices are 'less than $__' by knocking off a nickle. And I'd rather write a check for an even amount, then it's easier to calculate my balance.
  14. I see no problem with doing it that way, as long as they have some documentation for the FMV of the inventory transfered. Although I could imagine some state sales tax auditor taking the position that this is in fact a 'sale', and is subject to sales tax, unless the shareholder has a retail permit, and is taking the diamonds for resale.
  15. I customized my 1040 Client Letter to have the cover sheet read Federal & State Tax Returns.
  16. He has not missed the deadline to the IRS, and if he mails them now, he will never hear a thing about them.
  17. That one is simply wonderful, Daune. I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes.

    K-1 Import

Just tried it. I LOVE IT.
  19. No, but when you get a warning, if you click on the warning it should take you to the place where there is a problem, and then you can click on the ? icon if the problem is not clear to you.
  20. I've done the same thing, Ken. I'd certainly only do the efiles from the server, but I might try doing a rollover or two, just to see. Although this year I am doing all the returns myself, so I don't really use the other workstations very often.
  21. I've only done one this year so far, but I got paid for it the day after she got her refund, 1/30.
  22. That is great news. I've always been bugged that when there is only one item, they still print out the schedule, instead of just printing that one item on the line. As for the pdf print thing, it bugs me too, but I've gotten used to it, I guess. I do use their pdf print option to print to the Document Manager, but still use the pdf factory printer for most other pdf printing.
  23. Margaret, it will be treated as an offset of the expense, so you could either reduce the basis now, then add to the basis as the rehab is done, or you could set it up as a negative in the 'repairs' expense account, so that you don't add to basis as you pay for those repairs. The point is that while normally those repairs would increase basis, if they are being paid for in advance by the agency, they can't be counted twice. Think of it like you think of an insurance payment for a storm damage. You don't have to count it as income, but neither can you count the repair as an expense when it's paid out of the insurance proceeds.

    So, k.c.

It's not that great, just happens that Dave and I have gone round and round on some political issues, so I remember him more than most. He's good on tax answers, while we are miles apart on many other areas. But hey, I still like him, for one thing because while he disagreed with me he did it without being disagreeable. I respect someone who does that. After all, I know that I am not always right, even if I think I am while I am writing it.
  25. I wonder how much of the delay is due to the massive ice storm? I know some towns are still without power today, and I know some people are looking for preparers in other towns, so that they can get their taxes done now. It was a wide storm, with lots of areas affected. As for the free filers cutting into business, there will be some, of course. But the same trends pushing some to 'save money', are the same things that will drive others to a professional for the first time. Foreclosures, for example. NOL's, as well. Two sides to every issue.
