  1. Basically export is used for temp copies of data (i.e. to transfer returns between machines) and does NOT generally save efile data. Backup is more of an archival tool and does save efile info.
  2. I apologize for the dated info; but sounds like this is something else that has changed recently. johnmac
  3. good for you monkeyman. good luck. johnmac p.s. how is danielle and baby doing?
  4. I believe you can use a second ein by informing customer support to treat it as a second office location.. I seem to remember a post from nicole (or someone) stating that
  5. dam, and i was hoping you would start it in hawaii. it's warmer there ya know. :D
  6. It worked fine for me, both prior and after a program update.
  7. " Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt Organizations — Form 990-N ( e-Postcard) " blah...blah.. blah " If you would like additional information about this new filing requirement, including notification when the filing system is ready, or information about other new developments, subscribe to Exempt Organization’s EO Update, a regular e-mail newsletter that highlights new information posted on the Charities pages of irs.gov. " Got the above from the irs site, specifically http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=169250,00.html. Don't ask me how to subscribe to the newsletter.

MYATX.COM lists due dates for forms, if the 8879 is not listed there you may need to call and request the form be added.
  9. Deb, Ok, one more guess. The newfiles directory might need it's permissons changed. This is the directory where the updates are downloaded to. It does sound like a permission issue especially where netsetup did not help. If it is a permissions problem then only your "computer guys" can help you as they know how your network is set up. johnmac
  10. Deb, Just guessing but if the server name or the path changed then you would need to run netsetup on your workstation(s) again. On your workstation do the following: 1. right click on ATX icon 2. select properties 3. select the shortcut tab 4. click find target (or locate target) 5. select the NETSETUP directory 6. run the netsetup.exe file Hopefully this will correct your problem. johnmac
  11. Great idea. I got a 1/2 bottle of Wild Turkey and 3/4 bottle of Stoli. That should make me very peaceful.
  12. Mel, As one of the Kelly Services employees that was "laid off", even tho we are not included in any of the figures from CCH, it is my opinion that CCH planned this in advance. They hired us Kelly Employees in October and November to give the impression that the Caribou center would be around for the tax season, at least. Then CCH canceled the last hiring batch in mid to late November. Using hindsight, it is quite obvious. I will also say that CCH did give their non Kelly employees decent severance pay, approximately 2 weeks/year of service as far as I can determine. Tho "decent" is a very relative term. I will also say that this was probably due to William, IMHO. The Kelly employees were simply informed their services were no longer required. johnmac
  13. Tom, Per the MYATX website the NY IT201 form won't be avail until 1/28/08. You can find this info after you log in by selecting find a form (left hand side) and selecting NY. johnmac

I to used to be a Norton cheerleader, but ever since he sold out to Symantec the product has gone downhil, IMHO. I also agree with Nicole about AVG or any of the other free viral programs. I have been using Trend Micro for two years now with no problems, tho I am paranoid as I check for updates daily and also run daily scans. Jack makes a VERY important point regarding hardware firewall. johnmac
  15. michael, There is basically no difference as far as ATX is concerned between a peer-to-peer or a server based network. BUT ensure you read the installation instructions or knowledge base article 14660 as the installation is different for a network. If you are using a wireless workstation (i.e. laptop) read KB 4807. johnmac
  16. Mel, Another one http://www.dynamic-living.com/automated_me...n_dispenser.htm
  17. Martin, The only solution I have found so far is as follows: Open a return with the 07 organizer, click the organizer tab, click print on the tool bar, now in print manager click the plus sign next to organizer(07), click and HOLD the mailing slip entry, drag it to the top just below organizer. Select preview to look at the output prior to printing or select print to print. Yes this solution requires one to open and print every organizer manually, sorry. johnmac
  18. Maribeth, I just finished looking at cpasecure. It looks like a reputable site and they have taken what I think is a reasonable approach to security... paranoia. johmnac
  19. I am not sure about the "irs website" but the SCH A(940) available via ATX is ok to use. From the way I read the form one does not have to fill out part 2 for TY 2007. The form was the same for TY 2006.
  20. One reason MYATX.COM only supports IE6 or above is that it simplifies the coding. Another reason is that the software used for logon verification is only compatible with IE. The problem with the secret question not being displayed is (or was) being worked on. One way for users to control this is during the initial login as admin (administrator) create another username with the admin privileges, record the info associated with this username and ONLY use it when your account is locked. With this second username (name it admin2 or whatever) you can reset any and all usernames to either the initial password (for admin) or to the username for all others.
  21. One comment Maribeth; the absence of www does not indicate a secure site. One way to check a site's security, or lack of, is via the url. If the url begins with HTTPS: and your browser's security indicator is activated is the most reliable indication. One precaution tho, you must remember that anything man or machine encrypt can be de-encrypted by man or machine. One suggestion for those of you that send the organizers via email is to suppress the printing of SSNs. This is done via preferences/privacy, clicking the box and applying the change. johnmac
  22. I am an ex-ATX employee also, via Kelly Services. I meant no disrespect toward William and I understand you all wanting his expertise, especially for the coming tax season. That said, I still find the timing very interesting.
  23. I find it interesting that William joined this forum on the 28th of December, judging by Tom's first post.
  24. Ron, The 54 number (yes I can say William) is the number of ATX full time employees. There were also another 50 seasonal employess laid off. I am not trying to get into a numbers argument but for some reason ATX (or CCH?) does not want the knowledge that cusotmer service and sales at Caribou, Maine is basicaly non-existent except for the reliable source you named. John MacDonald (ex ATX seasonal employee)
