  7. I too use Malwarebytes to catch, prevent, and remove malware. I also agree that you should back-up all your data files. I use (and my husband uses) VMS Virtual Management Systems to manage my computer problems. They remotely fix your problems. VMSUS.com Well worth the price. I once called on a weekend when their sales office was closed to have them fix my husband's computer. They went right to work over the weekend, and we added his computer to my subscription on Monday when their office opened, charged it. It's an annual subscription, so even after they fix this problem, you still can call them any time over the next year.
  8. Lawmakers later approved, by a 60-to-37 margin, an amendment to HR 4213 that would extend the deadline for closing home purchases in order to qualify for the first-time homebuyer tax credit. The current deadline for purchases that would qualify for the tax credit is June 30, 2010. The amendment would extend the deadline to September 30, 2010. By Jeff Carlson, CCH News Staff My understanding is that no final vote has occurred. Only the closing date is being amended, so doesn't the amendment leave all the other qualifications in effect as is? If so, then the contract date, qualifying as first-time or long-time, etc., will still stand if and when the bill is passed by both houses and signed by the President. I think the rationale was that due to overwhelming the mortgage industry by the sudden spike in home buying to beat the 30 April deadline, contracts that met that deadline will not be closed by the 30 June deadline due to paperwork back logs at the mortgage lenders.

  10. You carry it back to the oldest year appropriate for your default or your election and then carry it forward from that point if it hasn't been used up yet.

  14. Finally saw my husband, when we're both awake at the same time, to ask him about his experience with CutePDF. Hubby's a music teacher at a middle school (chorus and keyboard) and music director/organist at church. He says he tried the free version of CutePDF and liked it and hasn't used anything else for some time. He uses it mostly when he creates music (drum and trumpet parts for Sunday's outdoor children's service, for instance) and needs to email them to people who would not have his music software on their computers, not be able to open a document he created in his music software. So, he "prints" the file to CutePDF and then emails the file in that format for others to read, print, whatever. He's never tried to notate nor encrypt. Sorry. If you're thinking of those functions for privacy, do ask around at other churches also to see what they use and at your regional &/or national church level to see what they recommend. For instance, our church uses accounting software encouraged by our Diocese as providing financial reports in the format required by the Diocese and includes some privacy attributes. (I haven't been treasurer since we could afford the software, so don't know what all it does or even its name.) If it's more for sending Word documents around to the Vestry or committee chairmen for their notes and to receive back, I know MA has strict privacy laws now re email so maybe some of our MA preparers have ideas for encryption software that still allows collaboration.

  16. I'll ask him all about it tonight. Back at you soon.
  17. My husband loves the free CutePDF. If you have any specific questions or concerns, I'll ask him.
  18. Sale of inventory, you know, Revenues/COGS/etc. Yes, if the properties he sold were inventory destined for resale, they feed into profits and SE tax. If he is now selling a house that had not been inventory but a long-time rental, business asset, then it's on 4797 and, I guess, not adding to SE. But, you said the intent had been to resell those particular properties.
  19. Why are sales on Form 4797? Isn't that for the sale of property that has been USED in a business, such as equipment or a vehicle that's being upgraded? Wouldn't the properties purchased FOR SALE be inventory instead? Haven't had property sales on a 1065, so I'm extrapolating here and maybe off track.

  22. Or, about last year when he was not required to take his RMD (and not pay tax on the untaken distribution). Or, being able to transfer from his IRA to a charity. Or,.... Ask him where/when he heard it and more of the context in which he heard it.
