  1. I've had a video card go instead of the monitor, funky stripes and had to be in safe mode until son bought a new card and installed it.
  2. I think your son should check out the UConn Huskies! Did you see them beat Notre Dame on prime time TV? Coach Edsell is a class act. But, he has to feel at home, because it will be his home for four years. When my son was at Penn State (not as a football player) I was OK with rooting for the Nittany Lions, except when they played my alma mater Michigan State! You can't always stand up for your kids. But, if he's on the team, I think you're going to have to get used to cheering for Boise, no matter what. (After all, you really win either way.)
  3. When I used ATX, I used formulas. Very handy. Now, with ProSystem fx, I use the lists to add amounts and label them also if I choose.
  4. Not sure; I didn't take it as it's newer than my EA. But, I do know it's in three parts, take one or two or all three. Probably have a demo or at least an explanation at NAEA.org: http://naea.org/MemberPortal/Resources/Becoming+an+Enrolled+Agent/SEE_Prep_Program.htm I noticed that it said a 10% discount for members plus scholarships are available! Haven't announced 2010 schedule yet.
  5. I second what KC said. :ninja:
  6. Misc 2%; although does he have to wait until all monies have been distributed?
  7. NAEA has an on line course with live instructors and makes use of Gleim materials, I think. NAEA.org
  8. Doesn't one of the IRS late procedures even mention previous returns filed as an S being accepted by the IRS as filed? Use that procedure to make your case.
  9. Early bird wasn't today (hubby's at his job all week) but last Saturday when I wasn't expecting anyone; it was a gal who said she would drop off on her way home from work one evening, so early Saturday morning was a surprise. Anyway, I think I was up until after 4 a.m., so maybe saw your light come on!
  10. Don't use ATX anymore, but I remember one client that had both the usual Form 2106 and also a separate 2106 for disability expenses that are not subject to 2% Now, if your client is over the 2% anyway, could you not use one of each type of form to separate the two employers? It would be incorrect in purpose but would reach the same tax result and give you separate forms for each employer. Or, did he have travel or other items that must be reported on Form 2106 of both employers? If not, could you use one Form 2106 for the employer with travel, etc., and put the other employer's unreimbursed biz expenses directly on Sch A misc 2% to keep them separate?
  11. Yeah, idiot husband (not always, but that day he was) opened door to a client when I was in my robe and just out of bed. But, the huge mail slot I had installed in my front door has solved a lot of those "not dressed" encounters. And, the phone calls trying to schedule a drop off, and getting dressed for just one drop off in a day, and the client who forgot something,... My office is in the opposite corner of the house from the driveway, so I don't get a timely warning as someone drives in. Client called yesterday after I'd stepped out of the shower and was in my old clothes to go work out at Curves and had wet hair and was driving by, could she stop in to sign? Sure, why not, not looking professional but I rushed her return so she's happy with me. No clients expected today and worked into the wee hours, so here in my pajamas, fuzzy slippers, and a fleece pullover. I'd be decently covered if the UPS man arrived but would hide in my corner and not answer the door if a client. I think the worst thing about the early birds is not so much that I'm not dressed professionally but that I haven't brushed my teeth yet. After all, we have to talk face to face!
  12. Why not one 2106 for one employee even though two employers? Not as clean and as easy to track, but you'll never have that old employer again, anyway.
  13. I use EZ Insurance Solutions underwritten by a CNA member company. I probably called an ad out of an NAEA publication, as the person signing my letter is in charge of Affinity Insurance Services. For whatever reason, they write my policy out of PA, even thought I'm in CT with the heart of the insurance industry just miles away in Hartford. At any rate, I just keep renewing. I have no claims experience with them. I did find sample engagement letters on their web site.

So, write up a response for them to sign and mail to the contact on the CP259 stating what you told us and detailing (names and SSNs) where the activity was reported for the year in question.

Is it a partnership or is it a qualified joint venture of a husband and wife or is it a sole proprietorship? What did they tell the disability people?
  16. Does GMAC consider your client to be the owner of the truck since his friend is just making payments to GMAC? Or, did your client pay off GMAC and the buyer make his own financing arrangements? Who are the personal property taxes in the name of? Is the friend just "holding" the truck until the mortgage company is satisfied with your client's loan-worthiness? Is your client getting the truck back someday?
  17. File extensions. Make this your cash cow for the off-season. Don't slight your continuing clients for these procrastinators. Tell them your fee is X (the amount you're thinking that's less than the CPA) if and only if they go on extension this first year, complex and want to thoroughly explore their options and review prior returns and coordinate S with personal and blah and blah and blah, all said with a smile.
  18. Or, you could e-file both; and when he receives his state refund, he mails in a check to the IRS with the payment voucher and envelope you provided him.
  19. I too had a client call last Monday in a rush for me to file a 1099 and 1096. He gave me name and amount, but no SS# nor address. I told him I'd get them in the mail that day if he'd get me the info. Well, here it is a week later and I haven't heard from him since. I will mail him the 1096 to sign and mail, don't want any responsibility for it, but was willing to mail the 1099 directly to the consultant who had requested it. You can e-file through the end of March and be on time for that part of it. I skipped the state this year as I was in a hurry and no withholding and no in-state work done by out-of-state consultants, but I remember last year having to file only the state resident 1099s with CT. Oh well, I'll wait for the letter to arrive.
  20. Have the corporation create an accountable plan to reimburse employees/shareholders for out-of-pocket costs to operate an office in their home.
  21. Thank goodness I don't have to walk behind a cow! I looked at a Mediterranean house when I was buying in CA that had a yard covered in white gravel. No mowing necessary.
  22. OK, I laughed so much that I'm one of the DBs that just posted it to my Facebook page!
