  1. This site has been moved to a new server. It *should* have taken 15 minutes, but due to the nature of how the internets work (specifically DNS propagation) it's possible that a few users with sub-par ISPs are still looking at the old site. I shut down the site on the old server about 10 minutes after the switch began, and so it's possible that there is a missing thread or a couple missing posts. Anyone who sees this thread: You're looking at the new site. I doubt there are any still looking at the old site, but just in case, I shut down the old site and put up a note with my contact info and an explanation of why their ISP is dumb.

  2. Entirely different thing, pure mercury and mercury amalgam. Mercury Amalgam is a mixture of Mercury and other metals. Not toxic. Pure mercury, in large amounts is toxic. Amalgam fillings are still used.

  3. To take it one step further, I really believe that John wants his wife to get some new sexy outfits. At least, that was my first take on it.

  4. Now THAT'S what I call a good collections policy.

  5. No appointments yet (most of my work isn't face to face anyway) but one man already paid me.

  6. Everybody hates bad news, but the only bad news here is that the old server no longer hosts the ATX forum, and if you feel Eric is doing a good job with the site don't forget to click on the "Donations" link, lets show our appreciation to him. MAS This is a non-lawyer spokesperson or paid actor

  7. Hey, Eric, we appreciate this site, and you, very much. So those of us who wish to donate [i just did] will, and you just need to put up with us!!!

  8. That doesn't mean everyone saw it though or followed through. For us solos, this forum and a couple of others might be our most consistent contact with peers, at least it is for me, and it is important to keep it up and running.

  9. Thanks for taking care of us so well, Eric. With that in mind and with the upcoming busy season close at hand, let's show Eric our appreciation for his efforts and hit the "Donations" link above.

  10. I converted 600 1040 returns yesterday... took an hour. I noticed that it did not bring over the IRA deduction taken in 2012 ATX, and missing last 4 "other deductions" on sch C.

  11. I like the idea of the "political forum" as I can ignore it or participate AND STILL have a good tax forum for my questions and to try to help others. I'm still also on ATX forum and "wade" through a lot of comments on their "general forum" that I'd just as soon "skip"" as redundant, political, old, or just not tax related. As a believer in "sharing" and "letting off steam", being extroverted (I'm really an introvert); it's worth supporting "general section" but I'd rather still skip some (as mentioned). Here -- there is the best of both worlds.

  12. Might consider doing what I did years back. I picked out a few good clients and offered them a special deal, if they paid me by Nov 30, they could not only speed up the deduction, they could lock in last year's price [for the couple that I knew were going to have a more complex return that year] or get a small discount [for the others]. Ended up with 6 regulars that paid each year in Nov, which used to be my slowest month.

  13. I think I'd rather talk to that customer-no-service guy, "Peggy," from the commercials.

  14. Have you considered printing the W2 Summary by Payers? Not sure what the goal is here?

  15. SCAM SCAM!! Do not return the calls. If the person calls back, hang up. If it IS an IRS matter, you/client will get a letter.

  18. If one of those CFL bulbs got broken over your laundry, I think the EPA would want you to destroy all the clothes the fragments fell upon. http://www2.epa.gov/cfl/cleaning-broken-cfl I've installed a few LED bulbs in my house and I like them much better than CFL's. LED's are more directional, but they are great in table lamps and can light fixtures. Prices still need to come down some more to make them truly economical, but I think that will come about over time.

  19. Yep, reasonable or not "peace of mind" is a huge value.

  20. And contact the Sec of State office/website for info on licensing rules. CA is a state that tries to regulate practically EVERYTHING. Even down to the kind of sheets a motel can use! So no matter what the type of business, ask about their requirements to operate here.

  21. Well that is certainly true. And Taxed does not always resist, either. But she's getting better [smarter] about that. And Jack is trying, also. I think we're all trying to keep the tone better.

  22. Catherine, in our region, it is surprising how many reputable firms post help wanted ads on Craigslist.org.

  23. Yes, but if you're going down, you might as well go down in flames. Sometimes it feels so good to throw out a cheap shot--until later, when remorse ruins all the guilty pleasure! I know about this. I've been married for almost 40 years, and I haven't always taken the high road. Thankfully, we have learned how and when to say "I'm sorry" and mean it.

  24. He's going inter-state as a sole proprietorship? Well, as I said, even an independent-contractor agent will give him a California nexus. The trade show sponsors themselves will probably balk if he tries to dodge sales tax. He will also need to allocate California source income and file a non-resident return. I recommend he take it easy with the tax agencies so he can focus on sales. Set up a California LLC already. And put the agent on payroll so he can't send his ex-girlfriend when he's too drunk to do the show! Yeah, rule #1 for an independent contractor is you don't get to say who the actual worker is. 3000 miles away.

  25. I/we leave all computers on 24/7. Been doing this for over 7 years. No issues. The concept that you must turn computers off when they are not being used is an urban myth. At the firm, we have some computers that have only been turned off for maintenance or occasional reboots for 5 years.

  26. http://www.atxinc.com/education_library/PDF/ATX_2013_Rollover.pdf Anybody see this document? It talks about the differences (2012/2013) in the rollover process and why it may be slower when you start but faster once it is completed.

  27. I have not even logged into the official board since the day they shut it down on April 7, 2007, right at the height of tax season. CCH has not yet earned my respect enough for me to even log in. Most, if not all, the most knowledgeable ATX users moved here.
