  1. Really? It's paid by the taxpayer, either by paying directly to the government for those not receiving SS benefits or by choice, or it is withheld from benefits. Either way, the taxpayer is paying premiums out of otherwise available resources. It hasn't been an issue in years and won't be challenged. IRS Chief Counsel issued its legal interpretation for use by IRS personnel back in 2012 that addressed this and stated that Medicare coverage for the self-employed person AND spouse are eligible. Chief Counsel Advice (CCA) 201228037 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-wd/1228037.pdf JoA article from 2012 in explanation. https://www.journalofaccountancy.com/news/2012/jul/20126051.html Also, it's now clearly addressed in the Form 1040 instructions for line 29 that this IS eligible for inclusion in the calculation of SEHI. IRS statement on use of CCAs from IRS website: If by second policy you mean that a TP has 2 (non-medicare, non-medigap) health policies, then there are specific rules and 2 separate worksheets need to be completed for the SEHI. If, by the above statement that you are referring to MediGAP as secondary coverage to Medicare, that is eligible for inclusion in the SEHI calculation, as are other policies for dental, vision, drugs, and long-term care.

  2. I always have 2 printers, both hard wired, not wireless. I do have WI Fi in my office but only for my smart phone due to weak cell signal strength.

  3. They allowed some of the loss? Then sounds like IRS decided he was in the business of farming, but disallowed some of the deductions as not ordinary or necessary; or as unsubstantiated. Disregard my reference to Schedule A above if he was allowed to report a loss.

  11. Someone at the IRS had indigestion eating too much turkey, including the leftovers and overlooked the depreciation. If the business was disallowed, so too should the depreciation have been disallowed., as well as the leftover. At times, the IRS seems to have trouble with depreciation and I have run into a few cases where they messed things up. Happy Thanksgiving!

  12. Gail, thanks for confirming what I felt to be the case. If they cannot be business deductions, then they are personal. Tennessee sales taxes are on everything except certain things that lobbyists have been successful in exempting. Certainly not farmers except freight companies have been successful exempting fuel taxes on farm produce. The sacred exemptions include things like prescription drugs, newspapers, etc. I have hundreds of invoices that I can calculate sales tax on. Large purchases, so lots of money to justify the work.

  13. That's right, I'm not far away from Catherine and they're around all the time. Yesterday there was a lone one standing in the middle of the crosswalk like a traffic cop. I kept inching up hoping he would go around me but he was more interested in my tire and kept pecking it. I took this picture from the porch the other day.

  14. Yes they do. You can do it online and will need to set up preparer account and submit an E-Z Rep form first (it really is easy). Here's the link: https://www.tax.ny.gov/tp/request-penalty-abatement.htm
