  1. Christian, you didn't say how old these clients are or if either are collecting social security, so remember that if they are receiving benefits and choose MFS status, that the base starting point to determine the taxable SSA drops from $32K (for MFJ) to $-0- (for MFS) for couples that live together. I haven't used ATX in enough years that I don't remember now if that requires checking a box or if that is the assumed default for MFS with SSA benefits.

  2. "All connections are protected with TLS and 256-bit AES encryption. Splashtop also comes with top security features including device authentication and two-factor authentication. Plus, Splashtop’s cutting-edge infrastructure provides a secure computing environment with advanced intrusion prevention and firewalls at multiple layers." In simple form, you control your end's security by using a secure connection, such as firewall, router, and other items. ST will secure the communication between, and your client approves the access, so you are good. Me? I also use a firewalla box to allow redundant connections, and gain security functions on my end. Being able to use a phone to "run" a desktop/laptop is very freeing. Some will say it chains you to work, but I say it frees one to work from anywhere. Couples with multiple cell carriers and starlink, I do work from anywhere. My most favorite is processing orders while dining in a hall on Ellis Island. I imagined those who came through before, being amazed at the progress.

  3. Another quick question about Splashtop, since I've bought it and am already deploying it in ways I hadn't imagined. Are the default security settings adequate, or are there selections I should make to enhance its security? Keep in mind I'm using it to access a client's offsite computer to look at Quickbooks files and some Excel files. I've also discovered how easy it is to access my own office computers from my Mac (and even from my cell phone, which I wouldn't have even thought to try if you hadn't mentioned that). All in all, Splashtop has become one of the most interesting & useful things I've run into in a very long time.

  4. You may find you use it more than you think. I have a main computer and a couple of backups. To access the main, I can use my phone (like now) as it I were sitting at the main. I can access any of the backups from any other computer. My main happens to be upstairs, and I don't always want to walk upstairs (or get our of the pool or hot tub!) for something I can easily do remotely. Similar for traveling, I bring my main, but I can leave the main securely locked up and access remotely, and I can access my backups if the main were to fail or walk away. I am about to switch to a new main, and while the bulk of the file transfer is done via direct connection, there are always remnants I find over the next several months, which are easily moved via ST... The ease of the other party to allow the connection, and watch what you do, works well for me when I need to provide remote support

  5. According to their list, the latest security update for iOS 12 was 12.5.5 released September 2021. You said you had an iPhone 6, but the release from Apple says the issue affects the iPhone 6S and newer. If you really only have the 6, it may not be affected. The Security update for iOS / iPadOS 15 is version 15.6.1 if you want to double check your husband's devices. EDIT: The information on that first link does say that 15.6.1 is available for the iPhone 6S. That, along with your iOS version being 12.5.5 tells me you do have an iPhone 6 (not 6S), and will not get (or need) the security update.

  6. The only thing my iPhone6 is offering to update is Facebook, and it can't. I have Automatic Updates on. My iPhone 6 says iOS 12.5.5. Hubby's iPhone11 says 15.X.X. How do I get security updates for myiPhone6? The NYC news (either CBS or NBC) had the story last night to update your iPhones from iPhone6 on, so I went to update when I got up this morning. (We were watching from bed. Hubby's iPhone was charging on his end table, and he was using his iPad, so he updated both last night.)

  8. Remember to change Filer and Spouse appropriately (correct SSN's, birthdates, etc.) and be sure to run the check return. It likely will turn up a few reminders to check. At least the bottom line should be easy to determine.

  9. No automatic magic. I duplicate the return, label as Filer, delete spouse info, change whatever is needed (anything marked as J, for example), then do the same for a duplicate return for spouse. I always print first the form MFJ vs MFS to confirm all data is where it belongs and the bottom line is correct. Be sure to note those items which are limited or no allowed for FS, only for joint. It takes a bit of time but less than entering everything from scratch. It does go quicker if you have correctly entered anything that was just F or just S and remember to split those J items, if appropriate. I have done many of these and am grateful for this feature.

  10. This should have be entered in QuickBooks (or some other accounting software) from the start. Entities need books.
