  1. Would you please post or provide details about that article and/or procedures? Just recently I have deceased client with an EIN for employee purposes. It seems I need to follow procedures to inactivate. Thanks!
  2. When I developed shoulder problems about 4 years ago, the massage therapist suggested changing the mouse. It fixed everything and I have been using my left hand for that since. When I was in my first accounting class I became very frustrated early on with having to put down my pencil every time I wanted to use the calculator. I trained myself to use my left hand for the calculator lo, those many years ago. I sits on my left side even now. It's actually harder for me to use a larger calculator with my right hand now, at least with any speed. Even old CPA's can be taught new tricks!
  3. I installed my program last week without issue except that I didn't have the choice as to where as in the past. Not so cleverly, I tried to defeat that to follow my pattern of, oh, 16 years. I have always had a separate ATX folder. Today when I tried to update the program, it didn't work due to my shenanigans. I called support. The first line person didn't seem to understand my problem but kept saying she was working on it. After about 10 minutes, I politely asked her to move it up as it was pretty clear she didn't understand and there was not KB on this. She promptly did so. The best thing was, after several minutes on hold again, I had the option to receive a call back without losing my place, etc. And it worked! And I got a great tech! He remoted in, explained how things are very different for this year, reinstalled and fixed whatever needed to be fixed. All the while he was very pleasant and patient. We chatted about his tenure there. He knows some folks from Maine that are still there. He kept up with this community much of last year to learn about the issues and understands how 'tight' and supportive we are. I told him about the barbecue picnic we sent to Maine support several years ago in gratitude. He was a bit awed with that loyalty but said he could tell from his reading here. I told him to never underestimate customer loyalty for great service. Bottom line: I was very pleased. Most years I call tech support maybe once or twice. If I have to do it again, I am so happy to have the call back option and techs that understand where we have been and truly want to help.
  4. Yes, lye soap and green stamps and boiling starch - ahh, the good ol' days - NOT!
  5. I wasn't going to chime in on this thread but am now pulled in. Bottle top shaker, check. Frozen clothes on the line, check. Washboard, check. (What was the name of that orangeish soap used to scrub?) Drying rack, check. Darning socks, check. Ironing underwear and handkerchiefs, check. Rinsing plastic bags to reuse, check. Scrap paper, check. It goes on. But it feels so good to know I am amongst those who understand so well - no wonder we mostly get along, we're family!
  6. Catherine, you had some time to yourself for fun this weekend, I see! Thanks for another interesting article!
  7. Thanks for sharing this very interesting article. I'm not so into art but do appreciate Vermeer, even more so now.
  8. Thanks for all this laughter! This was so funny!
  9. I always use upper case for speed and convenience. I also thought the software converted everything to upper case anyway but not sure. Then again, the speed I gained by not changing case was reduced by editing the letter using the Custom option where I use mixed case but also first names. Many times those familiar names are not typical so truly custom. One client's first name is Richard but everyone knows him as Sek. I have no idea why but I use his name of choice.
  10. That video has to be among the most inspirational things I have ever seen. "Limitations? Nah...just watch what I can do!"
  11. KC, I tried to like your post but 'there was a problem..." Anyway, I have to remember that option at my next hotel stay.
  12. I just kept waiting and waiting for them to give the real thing. What cruelty - and then to make and circulate a video is beyond comprehension... How can people be so heartless?
  13. A great chuckle and so true!
  14. Ah, this reminds me of when we acquired our first cat. He was abandoned on the street at 5 weeks old weighing 1 pound. At the time we also had 2 90 pound lab-shepherd mix dogs. Those early weeks and months had many hours of play as in this video - wish I had filmed some. When the female would tire of those little claws and needle teeth, she would put her mouth over the entire head of the kitten for several seconds as if to say, "Enough!" What a trio they were, best buds for many years.
  15. High school English class. JFK had visited our really small town on the campaign trail. My best friend's father was the ambulance (in case of emergency) driver parked by the stand where he gave a speech so we were within 50 feet of him on the dais. I really had little idea of politics at the time but it was exciting to be so close to a real presidential candidate.
  16. That's a good tip about the head covering. I did notice the 'wind in your hair' look and also that many others were wearing caps. Now I know why. Yes, tandem is the only way to go for me! Skydiving goes much faster than descending in diving and, in diving, you can always just stop where you are and, in fact, go back then or at the end of the dive. With skydiving, one is committed once leaving that plane so I want to be very closely attached to a pro! Yeah, play the video, put on your website, have a nice framed photo in mid-air. "Don't mess with me - I have guts!" Well, maybe something more gentle to go with your true nature.
  17. Indeed, way to go! Thanks for sharing. My neighbor has offered to go with me next year so I will take her up on it - when I return from my dive trip to Chuuk Lagoon. That has been my dream trip for about 15 years to see all the sunken battleships and planes from WWII. I've been to Palau, Indonesia and Fiji and didn't think I would get back there but it will happen in July. Hey, we have to LIVE our lives, right? Thanks for the inspiration and example of how to have a really good time! I saw the smiles all the waaaaayyyyyyy down.
  18. What a shame that we have lost yet another contributing and knowledgeable professional due primarily to the unprofessionalism of some of our posters. It is difficult to believe that some of the rhetoric written here would ever be verbalized in a physical workplace. The relative anonymity of this listserv has benefits but, sadly, we also are seeing some of the drawbacks. Would that we all behave in a professional, adult manner as the vast majority of us do...
  19. Thanks, KC. I might try that today for one online and, if it doesn't work, call it in again!
  20. I have had the great good fortune to have in succession 2 elderly (70's) women in my neighborhood who work a few hours per week handling mail, scanning, mailing things out, filing, all sorts of mundane but necessary tasks. They loved the flexible schedule (family is always first), a bit of extra money and learning some new things that are not too difficult. I cannot imagine doing without them. And they receive about 50% over minimum wage and a contribution to a retirement plan. And I get cookies....
  21. I finally got through and did get #2 EIN and a suggestion as to better times to call so will try. I honestly did not want to wait online and get rejected again at the last minute. The agent who helped me in the phone suggested that perhaps the duplicate name made it kick out. They all are PersonName Trust FBO Grandchild. So PersonName would keep coming up and perhaps the programming doesn't like that. I will keep the phone application process going, 2 down now....
  22. So I am executrix of an estate and named trustee in 8 trusts to be set up. I tried to get the first one online and received a reference number 101. I called the number and after being on hold for 52 minutes spoke with a person who didn't know much about trusts and couldn't tell me what the reference number meant (besides not being able to complete the application). Plan B, because one can only receive one ein per day, was to fax the first one as it was already within the "Your wait time is expected to be in excess of 30 minutes" and closing time. So one down and now trying to get one by telephone. Yes, my "wait time is expected to be in excess of 30 minutes" and now I'm not even sure this is the correct number. It is the one listed in the SS-4 instructions but there doesn't seem to be an option to complete a telephone application. I chose option 6, other, and am on hold again. Any suggestions on how to expedite this process? I need to allocate about $4 mil in stocks amongst these trusts and the benes are getting restless for grandma's money. Thanks!
  23. Great way to begin Friday, well, any day! Loved the photos and puns, KC and Catherine. Thanks a punch!
  24. Go for it! You and KC would make a great pair. Yuk yuk...
