  1. The reinvestment in a new home strategy died with The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.
  2. Excellent question

    ID.me is out

What is so stupid is that the GSA manages a high quality site called Login.gov which is used by many other federal agencies. However the IRS decided that they needed their own!
  4. I don't do many returns that require me to answer these due diligence questions. However they are one of the most annoying things I do every year.
  5. After lots of pressure from many different sources: WASHINGTON — The IRS said Monday it will suspend the use of facial recognition technology to authenticate people who create online accounts after the practice was criticized by privacy advocates and lawmakers. The agency said it would no longer use a third-party service, called ID.me, for facial recognition. Critics of the software said the database could become a target for cyberthreats. They also expressed concern about how the information could be used by other government agencies, among other concerns.
  6. It's not a new problem, it's one of the reasons I decided to leave ATX 4 years ago.
  7. "The Internal Revenue Service is temporarily re-assigning 1,200 employees to the frontlines of a challenging 2022 tax season to deal with a daunting backlog of last year’s paper returns and mail from taxpayers. People who have worked as customer-service representatives, tax examiners and clerks in the IRS’s “accounts management” operations during the last two fiscal years are some of the existing staffers that the tax collection agency is gathering for its “Inventory Surge Team,” IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig explained in a message to staffers on Wednesday evening. “This is an all-hands-on-deck situation to help people as quickly as possible, and reduce the stress on employees who have been and continue to face unprecedented levels of inventory to be worked,” Rettig’s message said. The IRS is looking at various ways to help taxpayers and the temporary reassignment of 1,200 employees is one way to do it, a spokesman said. The employees will remain in their re-assigned roles through September, he said."

  9. Actually there are instructions: :The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity. The EIN will still belong to the business entity and can be used at a later date, should the need arise. If you receive an EIN but later determine you do not need the number (the new business never started up, for example), the IRS can close your business account. To close your business account, send us a letter that includes the complete legal name of the entity, the EIN, the business address and the reason you wish to close your account. If you have a copy of the EIN Assignment Notice that was issued when your EIN was assigned, include that when you write to us at: Internal Revenue Service Cincinnati, Ohio 45999 Note: If (1) you made a Federal Tax Deposit or other Federal tax payment, (2) are liable for any Business Taxes, or (3) the IRS has notified you that a business tax return is due, you must file the appropriate tax return(s) before we can close your account. See Closing a Business for other actions you may need to take."
  10. I mailed my W 2s via Priority Mail on Tuesday, January 25th with a projected delivery date of January 29th. According to USPS Tracking they weren't actually delivered until today, 9 days later. Apparently, the Postal Service is also struggling.
  11. Wow, as if we didn't have enough challenges already! 12. Even if land and residence are broken out, nothing for appliances.
  13. Actually, that was one of the reasons I left ATX was that they were very slow to release state forms for smaller states. The last 2 or 3 years that I used ATX, the Oregon business entity returns weren't available until late in the third week or the fourth week of February. Some of the smaller states like MT or HI didn't receive all their forms until the end of February or the first week of March. At that point you're half way thru tax season.
  14. Terry, look online there are so many detailed explanations that you can't read them all!
  15. A possible workaround. 1. fFll out the form manually 2. Scan the Form 3. Attach the form to the MN return
  16. Your should have access to reports that tie to the bank deposits. Quick online search reveals that the difference is Uber's service fee which they deduct from the gross.

    The tax book

I received my Tax Book about 5 weeks ago, but I don't use ATX anymore.
  18. Well this will be an interesting discussion
  19. Can it be attached as a pdf?
  20. The key question is"When was it available to be rented?" That determines when depreciation and related expenses can be deducted.

    ACTC FAQs

https://www.irs.gov/pub/newsroom/fs-2022-06.pdf Wow, 24 pages of FAQs, it's enough to make your head spin!
  22. Form 1096 only applies to paper filed 1099s.
  23. The Equifax hack exposed about 50 % of all the SSNs in the US for everyone older than 18. I agree that our SSN s should be private but given all of the other hacks in the last 4 years it no longer is private. The odds are better than 50/50 that your SSN is available for sale somewhere out in the dark web.
  24. Is your client an operating business or is all of the Income and Expenses entered on Form 8825?
  25. Don't know if you can still do this, but we used to be able to use "applied for" in an EIN box?
