  1. But, in this case the client already had breathing issues. In other words....she was already under the care of a physician, the ailment didn't start after she bought the home. I still go with...get a letter from the doctor recommending the removal of the mold because of a pee-existing condition.
  2. I would say that if the doctor recommended that the work be done, it's medical. it's the same logic of "building a ramp" to make a home wheelchair accessible.
  3. When I go to trxsoftware.com everything seems to be working. Maybe they were doing maintenance, or maybe it's another site you are referring to.
  4. No, I didn't see him last year either. What I'm waiting for is to see if they flood me with calls to buy their software again. Even though I renewed in Sept., I got call after call to renew.
  5. Just gonna add....I've been using TaxAct...not one problem...not one issue, Gonna stay with them until I die. This has been the most pleasant tax season ever....I just decided to "cut back" or "raise the price" on certain returns. Life is just too short.......... I really recommend giving Tax Act a try if you're unhappy with whatever you're using.
  6. When people complain about the "small refund".....if it's a basic standard deduction I tell them...."Go anywhere else....and if anyone gets you one penny more than me, I'll give you your money back" With itemized etc....I go over the deductions....and show them "room for improvement" (maybe they forgot something?). Then I tell them that they are free to go elsewhere, but I put in my time and did the return with the information given to me....and I expect a consultation fee. I doubt anyone will pay the full fee...but you can never tell. I also throw in that if they come back to me in the future I will deduct the consultation fee from any future fee.
  7. The last time I looked into this (maybe 3 years ago), the tp had to have real obligations to get an OIC (not things like cc debt or being unemployed). They evaluated the income...and assets...and debt (I think they allowed rent, mtge, child support, car payments)....and then allowed a small living expense. If she's just "unemployed" they assume you will eventually get a job........ However, things may have changed. Also...there was an application fee (plus my fee)....so after explaining all of this, my client didn't want to bother.
  8. Speaking as an objective observer (well..I'm part of the TRX crisis), at this point of the season, I cannot understand why anyone is still trying to use "a non-functioning" program. Yes...money is lost. But is it worth saving a few dollars when your entire business is at stake. I had to buy a different program (Tax Act) and re-enter everything. It's a pain, yes. But, better to have "a pain" than "a disaster".
  9. I think this is something that should definitely be reported. I have no idea to "what department". Perhaps a visit to your local IRS office might be in order. Maybe the fraud dept? Someone above the reps that answer the phone. This should put them out of business for good....and perhaps.....lots of fines. Maybe a tax attorney....are there any in this forum?
  10. If anyone is still trying to use TRX. I called...put the phone on speaker....just to see how long it would take someone in tech support to pick up (I was going to ask about the NY status and 1040-NR status).......... But after 45 minutes....I was still listening to music Do you think people are still calling for support, using TRX, trying to set up etc....... Or, do you think they closed the doors? Seriously....what do people think?
  11. Oh...gee....I get things like this all the time. Every year....someone donates an old junky car and is told it's a tax write-off (or really charity in general) Then I have to go thru that explanation about "the standard deduction" is higher.
  12. If people are happy using it....good for them. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable using free software from an unknown company. It' the "risk vs reward" syndrome. I'm not willing to risk my business just to save a few bucks.
  13. My thought is to verify that the name and social security number matches what's on file with social security. Sometimes people don't know what's on the official record. 0500 Primary SSN (SEQ 010) and Primary Name Control (SEQ 050) of the Tax Form must match data from the IRS Master File. SSN/NAME: Does not match IRS master record. You should contact IRS (1-800-829-1040) to confirm the SSN / Last Name in IRS master file. If it is not correct, they will advise you on how to correct the problem, which is very important for you to resolve. If IRS gives you the SSN / Last Name in its master file, temporarily, log in preferably during off peak hours to enter this SSN / Last Name EXACTLY matched IRS record to complete the efiling or you can send return by mail Please correct and resubmit BOTH federal and state return.
  14. Dear Mary- I have this guy who's in his upper 60's. His wife is in her 30's. She works. He doesn't. He takes care of the child. Last year he had a 1099-C for about $30,000. I told him he had to pay tax on this. It's income. He got angry. Why? Why? He said the bank offered "the line of credit". I told him..."Yeah...but they didn't make you use it and spend it." Needless to say, he went elsewhere. I hope he stays elsewhere. Life is just too short to listen to this nonsense and irresponsibility. For people like this, I only care that I get paid. And believe me, I am a bleeding heart. I reduce my already low fees if someone is having a problem.
  15. Oh I get it...but you gotta be objective. My client's case...her father was a well known author (you'd know the name...you'd know the title of his book...you'd know "the phrase" everyone uses from the title of the book). She could have lived like a princess for life....but she blew it all....and now if you saw her on the street you'd think she were homeless. In your case, you prepare their taxes...you are not their marriage counselor. But, didn't the wife have to sign the return/8879 for 2010. So, technically speaking she is aware. Perhaps he buys her lavish gifts and fancy vacations....again, their choice. Stay objective...........
  16. Hmmm....no refund expectations (that's with the CC).....maybe just putting them out of business. Doug Hughes is a thief. By 1/30/13 he should have said..."Sorry...it's just not gonna happen this year", and issued refunds. Lots of people lost lots of money and lots of business thanks to him. Personally...I have a temp credit with the CC company which I cannot imagine Doug trying to reverse. I've phased out on lots of people and lost revenue....but to be honest, this was a personal choice. On the date I switched to Tax Act, with all the re-entering of data and not having a 1040-NR on the program....I decided to phase out by not taking new clients with "complex returns", raising the price for non-resident aliens (since I had to do these manually) that were already clients, and not accepting any new non-resident aliens. Gotta say...after the first chaotic week....this season has been the most relaxing ever. No stress...no strain....thanks to TRX! (If I were younger, hungrier or more ambitious I would not feel this way.) I wonder if NY is up and running. And the same for 1040-NRs. I don't want to dl the updates...I'm afraid it might screw things up on my computer.
  17. I have a similar story. But, I've learned not to judge. With my client...it's her life. She knows the consequences. She'd rather live well today than worry about tomorrow. She plans on living off her social security....which won't go very far in NYC!
  18. Here's The List Looks like the link to the list doesn't work, but it said "during the first week of March"
  19. No, I wouldn't renew early either. I'm also a refugee from TRX. The "money lost" isn't an issue...but it's the waste of time. I was literally one phone call away from retirement (I thought one of my "regulars" left me and went to H&R...called him...he said he was still waiting for me....so I decided not to retire....hey, my people need me) but decided to call Tax Act (used them in the past, loved them). Tax Act offered a 30 day refund...so it was a "no brainer". Next year I'll wait until mid-Jan to sign up with Tax Act...unless they offer a refund that would extend into Jan 2014! Oh...it took just about 4 hours for the rep at TRX to do a screen share and install and convert from 2011 to 2012. It took me literally less than 5 minutes to install and have Tax Act up and running. Although I have to re-enter all of the "prior information" it was a trade off I was willing to make to salvage this season.
  20. I would not be t impressed if I knew my accountant were using "a freebie from an unknown entity" with my personal information. i don't think "cutting corners" with something as important as your software is a smart business move at all. (TRX..lesson learned)
  21. I agree, but I think that they will be "out of business" before anything gets done.
  22. http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/media/video-0054-how-file-complaint It took about 5 minutes on the phone. Just have their address & phone number available.
  23. Oh...I have one who wants me to add W-2 income to her Schedule C....so she could take a double home office (?????) This is the first customer of the year I told to go elsewhere.
