  1. Joel, have you looked at ArkWorks? I don't know what you want a document manager to do, but we bought this one last year, and so far I am pleased with the software. It organizes documents in a filing cabinet type of arrangement and comes with a template for tax preparers but can be modified for other lines of business too (we do some real estate management, and it works for leases, etc.) My favorite feature that it had and other comparably priced did not was the ability to create a PDF document and password protect it for emailing. They were also super to deal with in terms of helping us get set up and started.
  2. I use a spreadsheet to manage our files also, but it is rather different in some ways. We don't enter the clients in advance, instead we use it to log in work as it comes in the door. Then there are columns for the date it came in, the date we promised it back, who is working on it, etc. etc. When everything is completed, (we are paid, the e-file is accepted, and the client picked up their copy) we highlight it in yellow. I also have tabs for each month to keep up with information returns for bookkeeping clients such as tax deposits, sales tax, quarterly reports, etc. I like the easy way excel can sort information based on any column that you choose.
  3. Thank you for spending that much time looking our for us, KC! It is appreciated!

  5. I am not an expert on this, but I think you have to be in the foreign country or countries for 330 full days in a 12 month period to be considered to meet the physical presence test. In this example, since there are 365 days in a year, and you were in the US 42 of them, you were only in the other country for 323 days, which is not enough.
  6. I have had it happen a couple of times, but only because the client mailed it in without signing it first. So it can happen!
  7. We use the complete field like so many others, but we also use a paper system. When the signature forms are returned we put a copy in the customer's file, but the original goes in a folder marked "To be E-filed." Once the return is e-filed, the signature forms move to a folder "Waiting for Acks." Once the ack is received, I print it and staple it to the front of the signature forms and file them alphabetically in folders for "2009 E-files." That way, if the signature forms are received I will have a paper form floating around until the ack is received to make sure I file it and follow up on the ack. Not a perfect system, just one more way to check on follow-through.
  8. Fortunately, the state of Virginia gives us until May 1 to timely file state returns, but thanks for thinking of us!
  9. Filing requirement is based on gross income, not taxable.
  10. Have you tried re-typing everything to be sure an odd space didn't creep into the name somehow?
  11. I thought that I had read that the IRS was now allowing husband/wife partnerships to file Sch. C's as opposed to 1065 as long as it was not an LLC. So it seems odd that this is the year that they eliminate that check box to me. I have not needed it, but I can see where it would be helpful now.
  12. This trial balance worksheet seems to me to be another way ATX and Taxwise are getting more similar. We used to use Taxwise before we switched to ATX, and they had a trial balance worksheet. Of course, theirs was a true trial balance where you could put income and expense figures as as balance sheet numbers. I don't know if it still works that way, but that was one of the features I really liked about Taxwise. If we did the accounting and had a trial balance, doing the corporate return was a simple matter of filling in that worksheet and answering some questions.
  13. :bday: Your wit and wisdom on this board have meant a lot to me, and to everyone you come in contact with. THanks!
  14. We bought an HP 7650 this year, and so far it hasn't worked two days in a row. HP keeps shipping us replacement pieces, and finally a whole new scanner (which we are waiting for), but so far I have not been impressed. Our admin assistant is threatening to throw the machine down the hill and then make HP come from India to find and fix it because she has gotten sick of trying to get the machine to work. Our plan to eliminate some of the paper copies this year has just totally been shot.
  15. If we are going to read numbers this time of the year, how about 10 40 22 10 47 97 88 79 84 53 48 68 and when we swith to letters, A B C D E F H J and so on...
