I have Nortons on 2 computers and AVG on one. I have never had a problem with Nortons and the latest version which I get free with my ISP is pretty awesome. I like the interface much better than AVG. I have Norton's 2005 on my main computer and renew it yearly for a fee. That is because this is where all of my tax files are and it has protected me very well since 2004. This is my desktop and the other two are laptops from which I move files back and forth on jump drives. The bottom line is that I am happy with both but the new Nortons has the edge....for me.

Please Help! Filing an Amended Form for $250 Credit
mcb39 replied to RetiredTeacher's topic in General Chat
Good For You! I have also been feeling embarrassed and ashamed as to the way this question was handled. -
Does the 20th also hold true if the rejected return has to be paper filed. I had one that was rejected because the former spouse who was allowed to take the child as a dependent,; but did not qualify to take the child for EIC because my taxpayer was the custodial parent. We paper filed it today. I sent along copies of the rejection query in hopes that he would not be cited for late filing. Does anyone know approximately how long it takes the IRS to sort one of these out.? I did my due dilligence and am sure that my client is entitled to the EIC for this one of three children. Client can prove that child lived with him most of the year. He didn't need the dependency so gave the two he was entitled to claim to the x-wife and she shot him down.

Thanks, again, for this awesome board. I just got that error message today and was completely lost. Found the answer her, of course.

I'm here too, Bonnie. Just ushered the last client out the door after filing an extension. Could have cried when he told me that he had converted his IRA to a Roth IRA so that he wouldn't have to pay taxes on it when he drew it out. He went to one of those "dinners" where they do financial planning for you. We did a direct debit with his extension but won't be nearly enough now; if it even gets an ACK this week.
-
My extensions are all in and am waiting for my last client to show up. I hardly ever file extensions, but this year was different in so many ways. Pushing myself to the limit, I could not have done any more returns than I did. The extensions are all ones that I have all the info for; just don't have the stamina to get them done today. And, that includes my own, as well as my bookkeeping for most of the year. I earned every dollar that I made and worked at another job at the same time. A week ago monday I turned in my request for termination at that job after 30 odd years. It feel like a big load is lifted from my shoulders. Now, I will have more time for MY clients and MY business and ME.......BTW, my license plate says it all!

Isn't that kind of like when they run a highway across your land and give you a payout. That is income whether you wanted the highway there or not. I believe that Julie is correct.

Jainen has caught many of us at some time or other. Good Luck All!

I'm with you, Bonnie. Never had such a grueling year.

This was just a strange and difficult year. So many odd situations. So many amendments. Just so much time-consuming work that really didn't generate any satisfaction. I have never been this far behind and I had about an equal number of new clients; and clients who had either passed away or gotten married. On to bigger and better things after tomorrow.........such as sleep. Might just sit and stare into space for a while. The good side is that I can actually see about 1/4 of the top of my desk. Cannot see the floor, however. Papers and books everywhere.

I thought that I was losing it as I just filed ours on Monday. Oh, my tired eyes, shoulders, neck and brain...Had to send a few down the road today. I cannot believe what possesses people to come to your door on April 14 with two years of taxes and actually expect you to prepare them before midnight tomorrow. I still have fifteen in the box, but have filed precautionary extensions for most of them. Have a wonderful day tomorrow, all.........

But Married Filing Separately does not qualify for EIC or a lot of other credits. How can he file Single if he is Married.?
-
Hardly! But they are holding his and his new wife's $3000 refund for 2009, so the sooner those returns are filed, the less they will take in interest and penalties. If he had only told us, we could have filed her injured spouse, because her record is clean and this CP20 came as a complete shock to her. No, they have paid the requisite fee in addition to the original filing fee and the fee for amending her 2008 return when she bought a house shortly before they were married. Thankfully, she kept him off of the home purchase as she knew his credit was shot. Isn't this a nice slate on which to start out a new marriage? Jainen, on this board, things are not always what they seem as you know only too well.

Isn't that absolutely amazing? Time to hit the "Donate" button if at all possible. :bday:

The fact that they pay themselves too much should have nothing to do with the profit or loss; unless you are referring to the Guaranteed Payments. If that is the case, then the Guaranteed Payments should be shown on the K1 as SE Income. And, of course, the loss under Ordinary Income should negate the SE down to 3000. Old Jack has this exactly right, unless there is something that we don't know. Did you also prepare the Partnership return?
-
Oh, Margaret......good for you. You have always had so much good common sense to offer to this board.
-
Yes, it is. Actually I was surprised that the State would issue it especially as WI is right up there with the highest taxed states. However, my boys did that and the explaination was "Tax Preparer" so it flew. I love it. It's all in the interpretation!
-
Follow the lines on the K1 and post them to the K1 worksheet. In most cases, the Guaranteed Payments would be SE income, unless he is an inactive partner.

In all of the years that I have been preparing tax returns, I have never had so many amendments to do just before the 15th. Had a client come in 2 days ago; wife had just received another W2; had a lady call the week before who had just received a 1099 Interest that day. Just had to do a 2006 return so the client could receive his $39 refund. (Of course, he had also not filed 2004 or 2005 either), so just did them all so I could get it behind me. These do not include the previously posted client who received the inherited IRA; received the money in 2009, received the 1099 in 2010 and it was dated 2008 so just finished amending 2008 for him and he took a massive hit. And then there are all of those first time homebuyers who have already filed 2009 and now want to amend to get their credit. I am running steadily behind and have begun to file extensions. Have never had a year like this one. Oh, and then there are the ones who filed on TurboTax and have found out that it was wrong and "Could you please fix this before the 15th?" Sometimes I wonder what I am doing in this business, but sometimes I help someone who really needs help and then I love it. :dunno:

It is pretty unlikely that the son is providing over half of his own support on $7000, but could be possible. I am more concerned with the fact that if there are any education credits on the father's return, you have to remember that the education credits follow the exemption regardless of who pays them. Without knowing all of the facts, it is hard to answer, but my thought is that either the father takes the deduction or nobody does.
-
I do not include the 8829. Just call it Office Expenses on the other line. I save the 8829 in the file to substantiate the calculations. Also, print and then delete it from the return before e-filing.
-
Have had that on my Jeep for over a year and never thought to put it on here. I get so many comments from complete strangers as well as clients. My boys did that....picked the wording and ordered the plates. Just because you're getting older doesn't mean you can't have some fun. :D
-
Have been trying to get this to work for weeks. Finally called in the big guns. Had to try to change my avatar.
-
I prepare the 8829 and then manually input the total into one of the rentals on one of the Other Expenses lines. Have never had a problem with this.

Thank you both...I have gone with your answers and my own feelings and have not claimed the EIC for the grandparents. He could have easily have fallen into the loop as a student except that they could not afford the tuition last year. We will see what happens in 2010 and what SS finally rules. The prior year, he was a student at a technical school. I thought it was "food for thought" and feel assured that I have done my due dilligence.
