  1. http://www.accountin...1496a:&st=email A new Web site aims to establish a competitive bidding system where tax preparers can compete for clients.
  2. you can use passwords to limit who can OPEN returns but I do not see how you could prevent them being able to see THE NAMES OF ALL CLIENTS. Bu frankly. if that is a problem it's something beyond a software problem, it's a 'trust' issue. Maybe that is what you need to address?
  3. And believe me, the LAST THING YOU NEED IS DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF A RETURN ON DIFFERENT DATABASES! Ages ago, when I was using none networked computers, I learned that lesson the hard way.
  4. Ok, to be fair, my computer expert sons always set up my new computers, so I really do not know personally how difficult it is. But I do know that once set, it's a piece of cake to use, and does not require any other company's input or cost. And I do know there are free videos that will walk you through the setup. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315328 http://technet.micro...y/bb457106.aspx http://techtips.salo...ktop-11704.html Does not sound too difficult. Step 1 Download the official Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software tool. See "Resources." Step 2 Double-click the installation file you downloaded, named "MSRDPCLI.EXE," to start the installation process. Click the "Next" button, agree to the license terms and conditions and then wait for the software to finish installing on your computer. Step 3 Restart your computer once the software has been installed, and you will be able to use it.
  5. Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2013, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, sexual preference or TV channel of choice of the wished. By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher. Disclaimer: No trees were harmed in the sending of this message; however, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced.
  6. Praying?
  7. I've used MS Remote Desktop for years, and it's both free and excellent. Why pay for anything else?
  8. This was sent to me and I thought I should share. Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate. their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air. they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there. they were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say. they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day. "where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse. "this is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house." when what to their wondering eyes did appear, but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near. He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same. then He opened His arms and He called them by name. and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring those children all flew into the arms of their King and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace, one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face. and as if He could read all the questions she had He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad." then He looked down on earth, the world far below He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand, "Let My power and presence re-enter this land!" "may this country be delivered from the hands of fools" "I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!" then He and the children stood up without a sound. "come now my children, let me show you around." excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran. all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can. and I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight, "in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT." 9. Well, at least now you have something that tech support can get their teeth into. Use them, that is what they are for. Eric might be able to translate that error message, why not send him a pm?
  10. It requires Admin rights to install or uninstall, as a protection for your business. Once you have it up and running, you can set up users, who can then log in and use the program, they just can not remove the program, or do other administrative actions that you do not want every employee to have access to. This is not, IMHO, a problem. Would you really want a disgruntled employee for example, to be able to delete your entire tax program, in the middle of tax season? You want them to have access, but you do not want them to have unlimited access. The KnowledgeBase has good instructions on how to set these user rights up, as well as good information on lots of things that a new user can benefit from looking over. ATX has lots of handy shortcuts and built in tools, for example, that many new users do not even realize are there for them. Check out the Customer Referral form, for example. It's a great business building tool that a lot of users do not even know is there. It makes it super easy to encourage your clients to give you referrals, and at the same time let you track that source so that you can then, if you are smart, reward those clients with something extra, at the end of the season, to encourage even more referrals in the next season.
  11. Fantastic, Rita.
  12. I thought this historical quote sort of puts things into perspective. Clearly, this debate has been going a LONG time. "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." --Cesare Beccaria, On Crimes and Punishment, quoted by Thomas Jefferson in Commonplace Book
  13. Living in Jonesboro AR, site of the Westside School shooting, [the parents of one of the young shooters had been my clients for years], I totally understand the pain you express. That event was in 1998, and the pain is still close. The very fact that the act was so senseless makes it impossible to ever accept. I also know that there is no 'law' that we could pass that could have prevented any of these horrid events. I think what we need to remember, even as we grieve for the families, and the town, is that in almost every case of such a mass attack, it is the arrival on the scene of one or more armed people that ended the attacks. When did the shooters in CT and OR stop? When someone pointed a gun at them. At the OR mall, a man with a legal concealed-carry license pulled his, pointed at the shooter - who then killed himself; the other man never fired. At the CT school, once confronted by law enforcement, again the shooter turned the gun on himself. Same thing for Columbine. LEGAL guns, carried by GOOD people, STOP deaths. Don't let your horror at what happened blind you to the reality that these events are committed by disturbed individuals, usually with stolen weapons. We have to deal better with mental illness, but we can not expect that we can stop one by passing a law or a dozen laws. Or that we can make any place totally safe. Crazed people do crazy things.

  15. What should have come with it: Software Included NewSoft Presto! BizCard, ScanSoft OmniPage Pro, Drivers & utilities, Visioneer OneTouch 4.0 with Kofax VRS Technology, Nuance PaperPort Nuance PaperPort is supposed to be an excellent product The other products are also rated pretty good. If I were you, I'd practice using what came with it, before buying anything else. The scanner itself is not so highly rated, but you have it, so give it a fair shot. It should work best with the software that came with it.
  16. Good example, Eric.

  18. One quiet fall day, shadows and sun showing the dust on the old furniture, a student burst through the door--no knock, slammed a bluebook down on Jay’s desk, and said in a furious but rather quiet and shaky voice, “Dammit, Dr. Cross, I did not deserve this F!” Without a change of expression, Jay replied, “I know. But it’s the lowest grade we have.”
  19. I love the "If you refer to the seasons as Summer, Fall, Winter. and Tax, you might be an accountant."
  20. A gorgeous blonde visited a world-renowned psychic. In a dark and unnaturally cold room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered some grave news. "There's no easy way to say this, my dear so I'll just tell you what I see: your husband is a powerful man, but prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death later this year." Visibly shaken, the customer stared at the psychic's wrinkled, wise-looking face, then at the flickering candle on the table, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. "I simply have to know one thing," she finally says. The fortune teller met her gaze. The blonde steadied her voice, and finally got the words out: "Will I be acquitted?"
  21. So what? I do not see how that is relevant? John's point is just as valid.
  22. Good for you, Marilyn. It's funny how we work so hard, under intense time pressure during the 'season', yet hesitate to spend a little on tools that, while not 'essential' will make our job easier. Why we think that is selfish is probably the hardest question to answer.
  23. Jack, I too am skeptical about a lot of such warnings. BUT, I have found this source, Kim Komando, to be very trustworthy.
  24. From Kommando.com today: Hackers track your mouse Hackers have found an exploit in all versions of Internet Explorer that lets them see your mouse's movements - even if you're not using IE! Avoid using Internet Explorer until Microsoft launches a fix.
  25. Sounds like a good reason to call Support. They should be able to find the problem, and fixing that now reduces the chance that you will have a problem with the 12 program.
