How the Hostess Company Is Being Split Up You may have heard that Hostess Bakery plants shut down due to a workers' strike, but you may not have heard how it was split up: the State Department hired all the Twinkies, the Secret Service hired all the HoHos, the generals are sleeping with the Cupcakes and the voters sent all the Ding Dongs to Congress.

Follow-up to the article I cited above on the new investment 3.8% tax. http://www.forbes.co...investment-tax/ "Having had some more time to reflect on the guidance, I realized that my first write-up came up short in one notable capacity: it failed to highlight just how burdensome certain elements of the proposed regulations will be in practice. " Good examples in these articles.

Jainen, I don't understand your reply? ___________ Yesterday, the IRS released long-awaited guidance on the additional “Obamacare” tax on net investment income slated to take effect on January 1, 2013. This guidance came in the form of proposed regulations under Section 1411 that, oddly enough, are not effective until tax years beginning after December 31, 2013. However, taxpayers may rely on these proposed regulations until final regulations are issued, which is expected to happen sometime during 2013. These proposed regulations are both interesting and longer than the Old Testament. I’m kidding of course; they’re not interesting at all. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of several areas of guidance that may not have been covered in the past. http://www.forbes.co...ax-regulations/

Going to get the surgery here before i go to CA. If they are able to use the robotic method, that cuts recovery time from 6 weeks down to usually two weeks. So that's what I'm hoping works for me.

Looks like surgery will be in Jan. Results of tests so far look promising.

This is the best answer I know of, and is a good one to print out to hand to a client in this sort of situation. When I did I highlighted the next to last paragraph. Ended the discussion. http://www.finaid.org/loans/20080919treasurylevinforgiveness.pdf -
Be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement & feedback it well deserves.

I think I picked the wrong company for my CE hours

Cathy, you are right. I do actually know better than to rely on IRS Pubs instead of going to the Code! Sometimes it's hard not to suspect they deliberately try to write them to confuse, isn't it? And it's not "Cheapskate" to try to get a bargain deal. After all, this board is one of the best "continuing ed" sources I know, but you can't get CE units for it! Sometimes you just have timing issues, and want to get the technical issue of the credits behind you quickly and cheaply, while still doing tons of study all year. -
If it was ONLY procrastination, then no abatement. However, we all know there can be legitimate reasons sometimes for procrastination. I will not just ASSUME that there is no reasonable explanation possible. I agree it's not going to be easy, but not that it is impossible. We don't know enough details to determine that.

Yeah, Jack, what Jainen said! Don't be so hard-line, leave that to the IRS.

Great, John. Word of mouth is the best way to spread the word.

Sears - Christmas shopping this year. I know I needed this reminder, since Sears isn't always my first choice. It's amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and Sears hasn't withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year? What commitment you say? How does Sears treat its employees who are serving in our military? By law , they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being on active duty. Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all employees who are serving. I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at Sears at least once this year. Be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement & feedback it well deserves. Pass it on. I decided to check this before I sent it forward. So I sent the following e-mail to the Sears Customer Service Department: I received this e-mail and I would like to know if it is true. If it is, the internet may have just become one very good source of advertisement for your company. I know I would go out of my way to buy products from Sears instead of another store for a like item, even if it's cheaper at that store. This is their answer to my e-mail: Dear Customer: Thank you for contacting Sears. The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback. Sears regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our men and women can make. This is the " least" we can do for them. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time. Bill Thorn Sears Customer Care [email protected] 1-800-349-4358 Please pass this on . Sears needs to be recognized for this outstanding contribution and we need to show them as Americans, we do appreciate what they are doing for our Military!!! It's verified! I think I picked the wrong company for my CE hours

From Pub 501 IF the person is your . . . qualifying child (such as a son, daughter, or grandchild who lived with you more than half the year and meets certain other tests) AND . . . he or she is single THEN that person is . a qualifying person, whether or not you can claim an exemption for the person. Qualifying Child There are five tests that must be met for a child to be your qualifying child. The five tests are: Relationship, Age, Residency, Support, and Joint return. So the biggest problem I see with that section is the age issue Age Test To meet this test, a child must be: Under age 19 at the end of the year and younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), A full-time student under age 24 at the end of the year and younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), or Permanently and totally disabled at any time during the year, regardless of age. -
It is not part of "Wages", either taxable or exempt. It's a separate animal entirely.

It's OK to ask "dumb questions", that is a sign of someone who wants to learn and expand his base of knowledge. No one here will be critical of you for asking.. And this board has a great number of knowledgeable professionals who are happy to share their experience with those smart enough to ask.

I'll add that my computer expert sons say the same thing, that for business use, Win 8 is a mistake, at least at this stage. That one is aimed at the home use market, games and pictures, etc.

Obamacare for Dummies - something simple for my clients
kcjenkins replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Sorry Tom, it's hard to summarize a 2,000+ page law into even 5 pages, I don't think it's humanly possible to get it down to one page. So I just gave you the links I had saved for myself. There;s a lot of overlap, of course, but each of those had some point that I found clearer, or more useful as an example for a client, etc. I don't even remember now why I picked those, but at the time I read them, there was a reason! -
Than you all for being such great friends. I value your friendship more than you know,

It's worse than that, John. He actually structures his investments to maximize after-tax profits, [a valid common-sense decision], while spouting his pro-tax political expositions. He's a total hypocrite. If he did announce he'd made a voluntary payment, I'd be very suspicious that it was a very insignificant amount. If he thinks he should be paying 31%, then all he has to do is write his check for that much, right?. t

Is this a situation where you did not get paid after you filed the return for a client? Or do you mean you had filed a POA and now want to withdraw that?
