  1. NOW THAT WOULD BE A REALLY VALUABLE COMPUTER. We would all pay a lot extra for one of those, I bet.
  2. Nothing you can do about dumb/stubborn clients except use the Planner to print out the results from each option, then let them fight it out among themselves. Putting it on paper sometimes works. If not, at least you did your job, by giving them the facts.
  3. Just be glad they bring them to you, Rita, because the time they don't will almost always be one of the few times they really should have!
  4. Make sure you point out to them "how smart they were to ask."
  5. 5/10/15 5/11/15 5/12/15 5/13/15 5/14/15 5/15/15 5/16/15 Every day this week will be the same forwards or back.
  6. Margaret, once you 'pull' a quote, you can 'edit' it by typing inside the quote box, so occasionally someone accidentally includes their comment inside the box. Mostly, we use that ability to trim a quote to just the portion we are commenting on. If the original post has 25 lines, but I want to respond to only one line, it's much clearer, and neater, to delete all but that line from the quote box, as I just did on yours. Don't think Jack [or anyone] was trying to put words into your mouth.
  7. Sad but true, many government employees do seem to think it is OK to lie to those who call with questions, if that saves them some work, and especially if it helps them avoid having their mistake exposed.
  8. A government watchdog says the IRS issued $5.6 billion in potentially bogus education tax credits in a single year. A new report by the agency's inspector general says the credits were issued to more than 3.6 million taxpayers in 2012. Most of the credits went to students even though the IRS never received a tuition statement from the school. Some students attended schools that weren't eligible for federal funding while others didn't take enough classes to qualify for the tax break. The IRS said officials have taken steps to better police education credits, including changes in 2012 that reduced the number of bogus claims by $4.5 billion. The IRS said Congress could help by simplifying the education tax credits and by giving the IRS more tools to validate student eligibility.
  9. Actually, the entry was most likely recorded to 2013 in error, a simple typo, since it was made after the 2013 books were closed.
  10. Was it he who called the bank? Or the daughter?
  11. I know and agree with all the positive aspects of efile, but there really is something satisfying about a neat, properly compiled paper return, isn't there?
  12. Perhaps we need to sue them over their misleading name, since "Service" seems to have been deleted from their vocabulary?
  13. I THINK he's referring to the grey text like at the top of the post, Eric.
  14. Applying for a loan, a credit card, a new job, trying to buy a new car, etc. These days, people check out credit for a lot more than just a loan. I'm not disagreeing with you, but it's just that a lot can happen in 6 months.
  15. Washington, D.C. (April 28, 2015) By Jeff Stimpson Enrolled Agents with Social Security numbers ending in 7, 8 or 9, or those without a Social Security number who haven’t timely renewed their enrollment status, need to do so as soon as possible: The IRS will soon begin moving these EAs to inactive or terminated status. Next month, the IRS will begin sending letters to EAs whose enrollment status is being inactivated or terminated because of failure to renew. EAs with SSNs ending in 7, 8 or 9, or without an SSN, who did not renew for the 2015 cycle will have their enrollment placed in inactive status. EAs with SSNs ending in 7, 8 or 9, or without an SSN, who have not renewed for the previous two cycles will have their enrollment placed in terminated status. If you have questions about your enrollment status, e-mail the Enrolled Agent Policy and Management mailbox at [email protected].
  16. Max, thanks for that info, but believe me, 3 to 6 months of an IRS Lien on your record is still going to hurt most everybody.
  17. One other problem, we no longer have ANY time to edit without the "edited" message showing up. You can uncheck the box all you want, but it does not work. Hope you can fix that.
  18. Because the person preparing the form has no real idea what is or is not taxable, so they check that box to cover their a__?
  19. I did notice it's a but slow when going to a new topic.
  20. Yes, Eric, please don't center it, takes away from the beauty, makes it dull and the old version was much more dramatic.
  21. Since she got the house in divorce proceeding as part of the settlement, the suspended loss goes with the house. She gets it all. Current and suspended losses are fully deductible if there is a “qualifying disposition.” Under IRC § 469(g), a “qualifying disposition” requires three criteria: Disposition of an entire interest (or substantially all), in a fully taxable event (where all gain/loss is realized and recognized), and to an unrelated party. If these three tests are met, losses are fully deductible against non-passive income (unless the taxpayer has basis limitations). Thus, in the year of disposition, losses allocable to the passive activity may offset portfolio and other investment income or may become part of a net operating loss.
  22. No, JB, Judy's cite is what you need to dispute this, but you need to act fast or they will be a) trying to get their money back, which is always slow, or b ) get the IRS Lien off, which is always slow, plus will harm their credit score even after it is removed.
  23. In Chrome you can refresh with Ctrl F5
  24. I like the circle. Love the better contrast, for my old eyes.
