  1. The article below might be well worth printing out and given to firefighters. Tell them to note one of the now recognized tax schemes is regarding the Mariner's Deduction (or other meal type deductions). Several of the preparers in Louisiana used the "Mariner's Deduction" to apply to firemen....just not true....plus the so called "Mariner's Deduction" handed down in a court decision only rendered a very minimal "incidental" allowance ($1 to $2 per day) to mariners....but the company who put out the propaganda about the court case tries to woooo new clients by making them think they won a large meal deduction for employees working away from home...even though mariners normally eat 100% of their meals provided by the employer while on the ships......just not true. http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=177519,00.html
  2. I created a test e-file with the K-1 worksheet and sec 179 (entered on line 12 of the worksheet) and didn't get an error about the sec 179. A couple of things you might want to check. Go to these forms and click in the upper right hand corner of each of these and see what versions you are using. Mine (updated today (12-13-08) are as follows: K-1 (Form 1065) input worksheet Form Version = 30 Sch E, Page 2 Form Version = 10 Form 4562 (if you have one in the return, though not abosutely necessary with the K-1 input) but might be the cause of your problem if it's present in the return Form Version = 26 If you don't have the above versions, then update your forms and try again. (Also make sure your program itself is updated). If that doesn't work, you mentioned that your client over withheld on his jobs plus sent in estimated payments. This may have nothing to do with your problem, but if the Federal withholding on a particular w-2 exceeds 50% of that w-2's income, you can't e-file the return and thus you would not be able to create the e-file. If you still can't get it through, try to copy and paste the error your getting when you try to create the e-file on your next reply.
  3. catax, There is a worksheet on page 18 of Publication 501 that you can use to help you determine if the client provided more than 50% of her mother's support. The scenerio is definitely confusing as the mother's in-home-support payments are taxable to the daughter....but the worksheet will definitely help you determine the correct outcome.
  4. Just tried the program also. The only way for ATX to eliminate the 10% penalty in this case would be for the preparer to INCORRECTLY enter the code "9" on form 5329...which as others have noted will not apply in this case as the distribution is NOT from an IRA. Bummer......but that's why we all have returns to prepare.
  5. One of my clients called me from her Baton Rouge office and said Liberty had just brought them 2 dozen doughnuts and asked what I had to offer. Faxed her a sign for her employee bulletin board: "Free baby squirrel to the 1st 5 clients from this office who have their taxes prepared at......." Figured I would kill two birds with one stone so to speak...get rid of the nest of baby squirrels embedded in the wall over my copy machine and stop the insulation and paneling pieces (their Mom is making them very cozy in their nest) from falling into my office!
  6. Denne, Did you use the "K-1 Input (1065)" worksheet to enter the Sect 179 info or did you override the Schedule E?
  7. I tried unsuccessfully many times today to log in to "myatx" from the atxinc.com site, but it always timed out. Luckily, I have saved a short cut to my e-file status thingy and am able to log in that way...just tried from the atxinc.com site again to no avail, but my short cut saved did put me through.....I wish I could share it with everyone, but it accesses my e-file status account. Something is definitely wrong.....
  8. MJG, Also...I'm sure you have thought about it....but make sure the employer knows he/she is NOT to issue a 1099 showing a "non-employee" amount.
  9. MJG, I would definitely discuss the minimum wage issue with my client and her employer (if necessary) before your client releases her social security number....also the household employee under age 18 issue regarding household work (if any). Ahhh, the webs we (THEY) weave!
  10. ATTN: Software Developers, Return Transmitters, State Taxing Authorities and Authorized IRS e-file Providers/EROs This is a reminder that Individual Electronic Filing will begin accepting Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) forms on February 11, 2008. These forms will be processed in the 6:00 PM local drain. You may begin transmitting the following forms after your 11:00 AM local drain. * Form 8863, Education Credits * Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits * Schedule 2, Form 1040A, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form 1040A Filers * Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit and * Form 8859, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit The expected increase in volume may result in an 11 to 12 hour delay for acknowledgment files, particularly during the first few days when the IRS will begin accepting the AMT impacted tax returns. If you experience a delay in receiving your acknowledgment files, we appreciate your patience and request that you allow at least 48 hours to receive your acknowledgment files prior to contacting the IRS e-Help desk. ---------- This has been an IRS e-file QuickAlert
  11. A dependent child under the age of 17 would be one who was born in 1991. Is it possible that someone has already claimed the child? Check the "Federal Reject History" under "myATX"....it gives a better picture of what's wrong with the rejected return. Cathy

  13. ajuorff, If the return still rejects, see the post I made today (2/5/08) entitled Rejected returns....follow the steps thru "MyATX" online and you will find out the form, sequence # and reject code....in other words, you know exactly what spot on the return you are dealing with. Good luck, Cathy.

    Rejected Returns

Had a rejected return tonight. From within the program, the "display rejection error" was useless. Found a quick way to trace the error. Hopefully it will help someone else: Log on to "MyATX", then E-File Center, then E-File Status...click on the "Rejected Return" tab and click on the social security number for your rejected client....then click on "Federal Reject History".....it then gives you the Form, Sequence # and Reject Code. Found this a lot more desirable than from within the program....for now, at least!
  15. Wendy, E-file the return, then after it's accepted, send a signed copy of the 8332 with the 8453 to IRS. There is a check box on the 8453 to indicate that a completed 8332 is attached (the program should automatically check the box). Cathy
  16. I had one accepted last week. Cathy
  17. Donny, Without seeing the actual income info and return, it's hard to say what, if anything, you missed. The 1st link below is a booklet put out by the LA Dept. of Revenue.."Credits, Exemptions, Exclusions, and Deductions". It's a little over 100 pages, but is well worth printing for reference. The booklet is dated 4/1/06... http://revenue.louisiana.gov/forms/publica...40058(3_06).pdf A new booklet will probably be issued later this year, but in the interim, the next link will give you the 2007 legislative changes: http://revenue.louisiana.gov/forms/publica...s/tt(10_07).pdf Also, I always print out a copy of the current years instructions for the IT 540. How much difference in refund was there? Were you able to compare the two returns line for line? Cathy
  18. Marilyn, I'm not in the office yet, but don't remember seeing the "8453 required" on any of my accepted returns. Why don't you check to make sure your return doesn't include any of those forms that are required to be sent to IRS with the 8453. It's no longer a signature form, but it is a cover sheet for the specific forms when used or needed with the return. Cathy

    Louisiana

E-file away...it's up and running. Cathy
  20. Cathy

    Louisiana IT540

Louisiana e-file up and running today!
  21. Cathy

    Louisiana IT540

Lynn, What mg is saying is that the forms are now there, but the capability to actually e-file is not. Cathy
  22. Cathy

    Louisiana IT540

mg, I just saw on the "E-File Availability" site that the "estimated release" is 1/23/08. I too, wasn't able to e-file LA yet....maybe tomorrow? Cathy
  23. Cathy

    Louisiana E-File?

mg, Hopefully, the LA e-file release date will be before 2-4-08 as suggested on the site. However, Louisiana can be e-filed separately. If memory serves me correctly, we got the clearance for LA e-filing before the ATX's anticipated date for the 2006 year. Maybe we'll get it sooner this year too. In the interim, you can e-file the Federal returns. Cathy
