  1. Since the computer is fully encrypted plus the spreadsheet is encrypted and the folder it's held within is encrypted (with 3 different passwords), I'll risk it. The backup for it is on an encrypted thumb drive and on an encrypted computer at my home where again. It isn't like using the same password everywhere because my computer isn't the risk point.
  2. I do also. It's encrypted but if anyone hacked it, I'd be in serious trouble. I print off a copy every year and put it in my safe at home. My computer is fully encrypted also. Supposedly, if you don't have the credit card processing feature enabled, you won't have to change your password on Quickbooks every 90 days.
  3. I don't believe there is such a law. The IRS suggested firms be more pro-active in requiring passwords and I'd suggest that's the issue. I know my software has started suggesting a text verification for my computer to access their online site - it's a suggestion offered and not a requirement. The software though DID kick out the saved password feature. Drake for last year hasn't made that a requirement. Medlin Accounting isn't requiring a password as of yet. Since they post here, maybe they can inform us of any law requiring such an action.
  4. Since I don't use QB payroll services, it's actually very affordable. Well - Free. A client buys the new version every other year and gives me his copy to install since I refuse to pay for a new version. Holy cow this really ticks me off. I've read they have been inundated with complaints so hopefully they roll this back out with an opt out feature. I'm always amazed by the arrogance and stupidity of software developers on issues like this.
  5. The geniuses at Quickbooks have decided to implement a Complex Password requirement on most customer accounts with the newest update. Because my companies have routing numbers with the checking accounts (supposedly) and I have SSNs for employees, I'm forced to enter a complex password before entering each company account. It is currently impossible to remove this requirement and has been dictated by the geniuses at Quickbooks. How arrogant of a company do you have to be to implement this requirement on your customers and force it upon them without any possibility of removing the feature? My computer is fully encrypted so an unauthorized hack is very unlikely. This royally ticks me off probably more than it should.
  6. Weird - so if something serious comes up - you are behind the 8 ball in getting it done on time? Sort of like our tax clients? I always get mine done in the summer months and set the timeline so that it's done before I go on vacation. Over Xmas I'll watch a few free videos to get caught up on new issues. I'm no more busy in June or July than I am now.
  7. I am being hit hard by advertisements for continuing education. 1-3 fliers in the mail every day. 5+ emails per day advertising CE for sale. Do most of you wait until the very last minute to get this done?
  8. I efile about 70 returns a year under my ptin - don't know if that's the issue. I've been in there the previous 6 months because I remember changing my password. I'm sure that was an issue previously though. I don't really use e-services much but sometimes you need it in a hurry.
  9. No - that's a different system and I've already done that. Still can't log into e-services! Submitted my EA renewal today also.
  10. My e-services log in no longer works. When I ask for a new password, it requires I provide it with my old password because obviously that's normal. edit: trying a few minutes later again to log in and it says an error occurred and I should try again later. Great. e-services has ALWAYS been a problem for me. They voided me out several times for no apparent reason and then all of a sudden I was fully back in the system. Can't figure them out at all.
  11. I'm with Max! I know the rules state Parent (mother / father) but I've had multiple CPAs and attorneys declare they extend this to grandchildren. Tons of website include grandchilden in their pitch for tax reduction.
  12. This has been argued on here in similar fashion multiple times. Some demand the income be reported when received regardless of any other considerations. Others look at it in more of a real world scenario of matching income / expenses and maintaining a pattern. I'd pro-rate the income and expenses to match it up with when earned.
  13. My laptop hard drive died a few weeks ago (right before vacation) and I had to upgrade to Windows 10 and have had 1 recurring problem. My network adapter and Windows 10 aren't friends. I changed the drivers multiple times and finally fixed it about the 5th attempt. Windows did an update last night and changed my driver again. GRRRRRRRRRR. Now I can't figure out which driver was the one that worked. The wifi crashes after a few minutes but if I'm plugged into Ethernet, it's okay. Bizarre. Gotta say though, SSD hard drives are freakin awesome.
  14. Trade date. If they entered a limit over to buy at a lower than the current market price - it could be sitting out there for 6 months before being triggered. Sara, where do you get your instructions to weight the basis between days when they die on a weekend? Instead of doing all that, notify the brokerage firm of the date of death and the cost basis of the account should be adjusted automatically.
  15. I'd call it schedule D, sale of assets.
  16. Actually, to be an active enrolled agent you must have a PTIN. It is literally a condition of being an active licensed enrolled agent. Right from the IRS website: Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2016 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a PTIN. (under the section on how to maintain your license outlines this also) That's a bizarre definition of a tax versus a license. If I pay the IRS a fee to earn continuing education they produce (CE is required by my license just like the PTIN is required), is that also a tax?
  17. Are Enrolled Agent annual fees an unfair tax?
  18. That start button did something very different in 8.0 than the traditional start button. It took you back to the start screen - not the traditional start menu.
  19. If it's finding things - Classic Shell is a free program that will make win10 look and feel like older versions of Windows. Puts the Start button on your screen! If I recall, Windows now comes with something to makes Classic Shell not required but I'm not 100% sure of that.
  20. ditto. Thunderbird and their calendar work well for me and have for 10+ years. About 17-18? years ago I had this really old, weak computer and I wanted every software program to be as small as possible to keep it as fast as possible. Dumped everything I could from running in the background and Outlook (or whatever it was called) was massive. I went with The Bat email for a long time because it was the smallest I could find. Same reason I used Opera and Netscape and then Firefox. I still uses FF for some things and Opera for others. Can't remember why I stopped using The Bat, still get a fuzzy feeling about how awesome it was. (seems they charge now - maybe that's why I changed) I dumped MS Office for Open Office about 6 years ago. Love it.
  21. Oh I agree. I haven't updated my computer but I don't think it would destroy it if I did.
  22. Yeah, we have 10 on our home computer and I was able to get IE on my bar at the bottom and essentially eliminate Edge - didn't like it. For work, the wife is required to use IE to log into her office from home and she's never had a problem with it. Windows 10 isn't the death that people act like it is. My older printer / scanner doesn't have a driver that works for 10 but otherwise, no problems.
