If you can't fix this one and know you want standard mileage rate, remove the actual expenses. Did you close everything and reboot? Duplicate the return? It's just happening on the one client?
-
It's where I get the extension numbers for the clients that tell me they don't know, can't be bothered to find their W-2s, etc.!
-
If that file clerk owns a house, she probably itemizes. If that investment banker rents, he may or may not have enough state tax to itemize.

I would charge them for the broken stapler, the bandaging, the tetanus shot, ....

Happy Birthday, KC. Happy Birthday, SCL.

I also have a new client, elderly father of a friend. Have his materials but had not started working on his return and had told them I'd file an extension to have time to review his prior year returns before starting 2013. He died last week. Daughter is mourning, so I'll e-file extensions now and speak with her next month. Does that seem right? Dad recently moved in with daughter, so she doesn't know that much about his finances. Is it Scarlet that says, "I'll worry about that tomorrow!"?

Yes. CT will penalize even with a refund. And, what was said above about that K-1 or other missing income.

Hey, Rita, I tell my clients they're lucky I don't charge by the pound of paper. I do have one now that hasn't returned signature pages; if they ask for another rerun with more "found" deductions, I'm going to charge them for the rerun. Or return their papers.

I think it's a midwest thing.

Good grief, Carol, don't try to do anything except the 2013 extension now. Tell him your bookkeeping fee and your tax prep fee and require no less than half before you start the work -- when you are available to work during your regular business hours. If he's already told you he doesn't have the money, then I'd probably ask for it ALL before starting work or stop when you use up his retainer and wait for the next progress payment. He's the one that's late. Don't pull any all-nighters for him.

Happy Birthday, ATX Community and its parents Eric and KC !!

I have to get extensions out, especially for those needing to pay or to pay 1Q ES. Including mine! Hubby started teaching piano in his retirement, so one more balance due to estimate for IRS, CT, and IL (my little farm from my grandfather). Still ten more promised by the 15th including a partnership, an estate, and two trusts, and several begging, but I keep saying no. I'll have plenty to keep me busy until 15 October, as I took on some new clients, including a family in Singapore for a couple of years and a Japanese national with a three-year work visa and a guy who died after giving me his tax documents! Second call in two days from a partner in a partnership I prepared (in a rush since they wanted it six weeks ago to prep their personal returns) asking where to enter things in TT. And, printing now for a pickup this afternoon. Trying some new coffee from a client of a client of mine. We'll see how that goes.

Tired, overwhelmed, fatter than when the season started, cranky,...

Huge deposit and promise summer (or fall) completion estimated as one month after ALL information delivered to you. What Jack said. If you have time for 2010 by the 15th, offer it at 2X your usual price, or 3X, paid in advance.

I could use some popcorn right now. -
Only to the extent that it does not increase the value of the house. Written doctor's orders. House appraisal before and after mold removal. If removal costs more than the increase in value of the house, then that excess is deductible as medical. Probably. Had some similar issues years ago with someone with MS that needed various accommodations made to her house upon doctor's orders. And, no, the appraisals are personal and not medical, if I remember correctly. So, the whole process might not be worth it. EXTENSION for that woman now, and tell her not to contact you until May!

http://www.dllr.state.md.us/license/taxprep/taxpreplic.shtml DLLR's Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing Registration - Maryland Board of Individual Tax Preparers The Board of Individual Tax Preparers is pleased to announce that applications for registration as an Individual Tax Preparer are now enabled on this website. Please be aware of the following before filing an application: Federal PTIN In order to legally prepare federal income taxes in Maryland you must apply for, be granted and annually renew a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the Internal Revenue Service. Find out more about the IRS-PTIN website. Maryland Registration A registration issued by the Maryland State Board is required to prepare Maryland individual tax returns. The holding of a current, valid federal PTIN is the primary credential required for the issuance of a state registration. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid High School Diploma or GED. Because the IRS has not yet established an electronic system that enables the Board to verify your PTIN, we must do so manually. The application provides instructions on forwarding a copy of the electronic confirmation you received when applying for the PTIN on line OR the "welcome letter" you received after your PTIN was issued. Failure to provide one of the requested documents will keep your registration from being issued. Registration Fee The registration fee for the initial two year registration and subsequent bi-annual renewal is $100. The expiration date will be two years from the date of issuance. Exemptions from Maryland Registration The following individuals are exempted by law from the requirement to hold a state individual tax preparers registration: a current, active CPA registered by Maryland or any other State, an individual in good standing and admitted to practice law in the State or in another state; an individual employed by a local, state, or federal governmental agency but only in performance of official duties; an individual enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service who is governed under circular 230 (exemption applies only to Enrolled Agents of the IRS); an individual serving as an employee of or assistant to an individual tax preparer or an individual exempted under this subsection in the performance of official duties for the individual tax preparer or the individual exempted in 1 to 4 above. Examination Maryland law requires that applicants for registration pass an examination, Section 21-302(e) of Title 16, BusinessOccupations and Professions, Annotated Code of Maryland. At its regular meeting held May 20, 2013, the Board resolvedthat Maryland registered tax preparers may practice until December 31, 2014 without having passed an exam, or, should the Internal Revenue Service again require the RTRP exam, until the deadline for taking the RTRP exam, whichever is earlier. The former. You'll amend by adding his info to hers. He does NOT need an original return to be on her 1040-X.

Or, took lots of time!
-
Yes, it's in guaranteed payments. He can deduct as an adjustment to income on his 1040. But, still SE tax. It was part of his compensation.

How many of your clients Check the "Presidents Election Fund" block
Lion EA replied to Richcpaman's topic in General Chat
They move over from the General Fund to the Presidential Election Fund. Watch out for the contributions asked for on the state returns; the states I've worked with add to the tax liability any voluntary donations to things like state wildlife fund, etc. -

No one currently. Have had a stray one or more in the past. -
I was going to go to my stepdaughter's and boyfriend's concert tonight, but it's up in Hartford, we'd be picking up a friend on the way, and meeting everyone for dinner -- away from home for over eight hours and not home until after midnight with church tomorrow morning. I think I'll skip it. Hubby has the friend to keep him company on the drive, and stepdaughter lived with us long enough to know how short my time is during tax season. I spent some time on the phone with her this week advising as she was evaluating the 403( b ) at her new job. In fact, we speak at least weekly. I need a short break, but can't leave for eight hours today plus the few hours Sunday for church, counting money, finance committee meeting, etc. Maybe a manicure on Tuesday when the salon is slow....
