Do you know if a final PY return for a taxpayer that moved from OR be considered a "resident" return for this purpose?
-
Not a surprise. But based on your earlier email they are not going to have out of state EA preparers anyways because they don't recognize our licensure. I don't have any OR clients, and I guess I never will. I will send anyone who asks to you Lee. Tom Longview, TX

Oregon has now adopted rules similar to California. The preparation of Oregon Tax Returns for residents or a business residing or located in Oregon by preparers located outside of Oregon is considered to be Oregon Income subject to Oregon Tax.

Thanks for all of the replies. I also got a suggestion from another local tax preparer who has used the free version of MordPass for several years and is well pleased so I am going to give it a try.

Yes I have had to do that on M-2 from time to time

TP having trouble reaching a live person at the IRS
GLGACCT replied to GLGACCT's topic in General Chat
Thank you, was able to listen to all the prompts and advise the TP how to get through. TP was able to get through and received a call back within 30 minutes. The system even assigned someone from the first time he entered his SS number a few weeks ago. System works as expected but you have to listen to the prompts or get caught in a loop. Thanks -
You might need to make an entry on the sub-schedule for the line in question (either negative or positive), to force it to reconcile. I haven't used ATX since 2012, but have seen situations in ATX (and now Drake) where I had to fix something using that approach. I think it's ok as long as a supporting schedule is generated and the wording explains the entry. Disclosure and all that stuff...

So glad to see this thread! I've been an EA since 2006. I received letter 5507 yesterday dated 4/14/25 saying I was set to inactive because they didn't receive my Form 8554. I filed and paid 1/28/25 and have all my confirmations. Currently on hold and considering emailing if I keep getting hung up on...

Same goes for other types of heavy equipment. I had a client who sold a dump truck that was over 30 years old for something over $30k. I actually called him to verify. The truck had been overhauled over the years and had a relatively new bed. But even if the rebuilds had been added to basis instead of bonused or expensed, basis is usually low on these older pieces and depreciation recapture yields high cap gains.

Hubby uses Dashlane and loves it. I've never gotten into it. Still very old school with a book on my bookshelf, a generic-looking file on my desktop computer, and a few cryptic reminders on a post-it note on my desk for software/app passwords that have to change every 30/60/90 days.

TP having trouble reaching a live person at the IRS

Maybe try the practitioner priority line. -
I use an ancient version of 1Passwrod that is still 100% local (on my machine). I know others who use the cloud-based version and like it. It's very easy to use, but I wish they still offered a local-only version.

TP mistakenly paid his state taxes to the IRS as well as paying what he owed to the IRS for tax year 2023. State notified him that he did not pay his taxes, that is when he realized what happened. The IRS never sent his overpayment back nor applied it to 2024. When you run his transcript, you can see the overpayment is there. His online account does not show the overpayment as he owed taxes that year. He has tried several times calling 800-829-1040 with no success. The phone tree will not get us to a live agent. Any ideas how he can reach a person or a different number to call?

So, it took 2hrs and 53 minutes, but I actually got a live body! She couldn't tell me why the letter went out but did confirm I'm active until 3/31/2028. A valuable lesson learned (thanks Lee that I truly didn't know I was supposed to renew by January 31. I probably should have failed the exam way back when It's irrelevant now. I can't say when I'm getting out, but it will definitely be before 2028 so this will be my last renewal debacle. As always, I sincerely appreciate everyone's input.

I am not sure how many times I called the EA "hotline" between March and May, probably 25 -30, after they notified me via email my cpe hours were short, which they were not. I believe anyone who works at the IRS should be able to do basic math. I responded to that email four times. It stated my renewal form could not be processed until I responded, or I would be placed inactive. The canned email response said be patient, don't email anymore, we will resolve this within sixty days. Then Monday I get a letter that I did not send in renewal or the $140, which I did Jan 7. This Tuesday, after I got the letter, I got that "no live assistance available" recording several times, and other times got through to be put on hold. All day, with several disconnects. Yesterday, I spoke to a rep after being on hold from 8:00 to 9:40 EST. It has gotten so much harder to get through to the IRS on all fronts, except for automated/electronic means. It just adds to the aggravation. I have been trying to get a transcript just reporting estimated payments for a client, long story about the many obstacles, since February. I am seriously considering hanging it up and retiring. The only thing that stops me is my wonderful clients, many of whom I have a very long standing relationship with. I will truly miss some of them, and have no one to refer them to. I stopped taking new clients four years ago, and have never turned away more business. But this has turned into a grind, and the headaches, deadlines, increasing overhead expense, the regulation, and an unresponsive IRS makes it harder. I don't know about y'all, but I feel less than appreciated/supported by the system, and this latest incident with my EA renewal really accentuated that to me. It is a very difficult work place when you can't talk to "the boss", or get cooperation. It's all stick with no carrot. Patti, I hope it worked out for you!

Hello everyone, I'm having trouble reconciling Schedule M-3 in the tax software after amending a Form 1120S. I’ve got it reconciled on paper, but the software isn’t lining up. Is anyone available to help take a look? I can PM the numbers. Thanks!

KC was always the voice of reason. (Not saying anyone else on this forum isn't, but...)

There appears to be something wrong with the Form 8594 instructions attachment, so I tried again. i8594-AssetAcquisitionStm-2021-11.pdf
-
From reading the form 8594 and its instructions, if the sale does not involve goodwill, the form is not required. See highlighted info on the attachment.i8594-AssetAcquisitionStm-2021-11.pdf.lnk

Patti, I would call or email your IRS Stakeholder Liaison, 412-404-9151 [email protected]
-
How many times did you call before you got through?
-
I started using Bitwarden, because it was so highly recommended. It's ok but I prefer the one built into Firefox.
-
I also received the same letter today. I wanted to inform you that I spoke with an agent approximately two weeks ago about my account, and I was assured that it had been renewed and that my new card would be arriving soon. In fact, the card arrived last week.
-
I have been using LastPass for several years, but am looking for better alternatives. I am a single user and need a manager that I can use mostly on my desktop, but would also like to consider on my phone as well. Would appreciate your thoughts.

No luck today, just the recording but I will continue to try to reach them and get confirmation. Or die trying. I don't use ATX, I have Lacerte, but this board is filled with the best people in the tax business. That is sincere. Stick around, you'll learn a LOT and get a few laughs here and there
